I was planning to do this for a long time now, and with the Season 3 of the new series coming up that will change a lot and a lot of different perspectives from Smurfs fans I think it's the right time to share my thoughts on some of the most controversial topics about the Smurfs.
I get really upset by the comments about 1980s Greedy and I think it's the perfect topic to begin with. Most people think that this version ofGreedy was a mix between comic Greedy and Chef, but this is absosmurfly incorrect. By the airing of the 1981 series there was only about 10 different comics released by Peyo and not even one of them featured Chef Smurf. Even more, there were occasions where the Smurfs refered to Greedy as the village cook in the comics; most notable of them is in the Smurf Stories, one-page gag collection (which was unfortunately never translated to English). There the Smurfs litterally say that they'll ask Greedy to bake them a cake, which is a proof that Greedy was supposed to be the Smurfs' cook before Chef was even created.
A Smurf with a cooking hat however does appear in The Fake Smurf story, but is never named, making it possible to be just Greedy with a cooking hat.
The whole Greedy the cook thing was then retconned in the later comics and the new series with the introduction of Chef and even Baker Smurf, so the confusion is completely understandable.
I'll try to be quick here because I've talked about Greedy and Chef so long. Clumsy again like Greedy wasn't really a mix of characters at the beginning, but unlike Greedy Clumsy was initially a replacement for Dopey. Clumsy never appeared before 1980s series and the creators probably thought of giving Dopey's traits to a character with more potential, and everyone must admit it turned out great. And then after the series, they made two characters out of it
On the other hand, I didn't like the only "real" combination of characters in that series, that is Painter and Sculptor. Painter wasn't bad in the 1980s series, I just really hated that they gave him Sculptor's traits, because unlike Chef and Clumsy, Sculptor was confirmed to exist in the early comics.
I really hope they utilize them both more in later seasons of the new series.
This one is going to get me a lot of hate, but I really think Brainy wasn't that unbearable in the 1980s. I get the hate for it, he was truly annoying in later seasons, but I think people overreact with it. Especially in the first few seasons, he was completely bearable and even though they ruined him later on, they had some good ideas like him writing his own books. He was bad, but don't go too far with the Brainy hate.
Another controversial one, but I just hate it when people talk aboutthis being the same universe. Yes, the Smurfs have their mischevious personalities back, yes, Brainy is not an egoist, yes, Clumsy, Dopey, Greedy, and Chef are separate characters, but no, it's not the same universe. For example, Bigmouth lives in the old tower, which was never a thing in the comics, or Gargamel's hovel being located on a cliff, or Clumsy and Dopey being firemen. And the worst of them all is making Hefty an egoist and the only Smurf attracted to Smurfette, who for some reason randomly turns into an action girl. I've never seen that in the comics. I don't think the new series are bad, they're just not the same as the comics.
The new series were based off the recent comics and the old series were based off the Peyo's comic stories, but neither of them is the continuation of the comics.
Hate me all you want, but I think I made some completely reasonable points.
