The Smurfs invent golfing and forget about repairing a bridge, but that's not the only danger the Smurfs should be caring about.

Here comes a new game for the Smurfs

The Smurfs are playing smurfball behind the village, or better, Hefty is playing smurfball behind the village. He runs by the bored Smurfs, who are either doing nothing or something else to distract themselves and scores an empty goal. He cheers for himself and proposes to play another game, but all the others disagree and start leaving. Hefty asks them what other game besides smurfball do they know, and an unnamed Smurf who picks up a stick from the ground replies that they don't know but they sure had enough of smurfball.

That same Smurf walks down a hill in the forest and starts hitting a stone with his stick, until the stone lands in a hole made by a gopher. He notices this and tries that again but misses. He is joined by two Smurfs that and say that it looks like he's having fun, so they join him in playing this newfound game. Handy, Hefty, Grouchy and Clumsy come past them pulling two wagons full of wood for bridge repairs and ask what they're doing. The Smurf addresses the game as gophery, which Clumsy and Hefty mishear and change into golf, while Handy offers to improve their equipment.

Papa Smurf waits at the bridge wondering where everyone is when Clumsy shows up, struggling to pick up his golf ball and accidentally kicking it into the river. Clumsy explains to Papa that everyone is playing golf, which Papa goes to check. Meanwhile, the Smurfs are enjoying golf and Hefty struggles to hit the ball, counting the times he misses it. His loud four becomes a part of the game, and everyone starts using it when they hit the ball.

Finally a sport at which Hefty isn't the best of the Smurfs. Four!

Papa Smurf enters a mushroom where Brainy has made a timetable to which every Smurf must sign up before they go playing and even wrote his book about golfing. Papa is looking where Handy, who comes past the mushroom. Papa reminds Handy about the bridge repairment, and Handy assures him that they will start first thing in the morning. Smurfette shows up and offers Papa a ride in her golf cart, which Papa accepts and they go for a wild ride. Meanwhile, Hefty has missed the ball more than ninety times and dug himself into the ground while Slouchy, who is carrying his equipment, has already fallen asleep.

In the morning, the Smurfs are waiting for Handy to show up at the bridge and Handy suddenly arrives with the new improved golf balls he has invented. Handy leads them to the golf fields to demonstrate the use of his super balls and the ball flies far into the forest. Meanwhile, Gargamel and Azrael are out in the forest and Gargamel says to his cat that the newest idea for catching Smurfs is going to hit him any moment when Handy's superball nearly hits them and starts bouncing around them, and they crawl away. The Smurfs look where the ball has gone to, and finally decide to put the superballs aside for some time. Handy proposes to return to the bridge, but Hefty says they should play a little golf since they're already here. Handy tries to convince them to go back, but they manage to convince him into joining them. As they're playing, Gargamel and Azrael discover their golf fields wondering what they're doing. Brainy almost hits them with a ball and then runs them over with his golf cart along with Clumsy, not even noticing them, which gives the wizard a great idea.

Late in the evening, the Smurfs are returning back to the village and as they come to the bridge, they see an angry Papa Smurf on the other side and remember about the repairments they forgot to do, and Handy again says that they'll do it in the morning. During the night, Gargamel sets up many traps all across the golf field.

Gargamel's First Catch of the Day (A Hole in Smurf)

Next day at the bridge, Clumsy brings the nails as Handy requested but trips and drops them into the river. Handy decides to go get them himself, and the Smurfs enlist this to sneak out to a golf round. Brainy is struggling to hit the ball watched by Clumsy and Smurfette, who try to give him a piece of advice, and as they talk, the ball disappears into the ground and soon the same happens to them, as they fall right into Gargamel's net. Hefty and Slouchy are driving in a golf cart to find Hefty's ball, when a magnet pulls them back right into Gargamel's trap. Painter and Grouchy are standing on a platform set by Gargamel, and when Grouchy pulls out the flag, the platform opens and traps them too. Meanwhile, Handy returns to the bridge and sees that everyone is gone, immediately realising what they're doing. Golf Smurf (the inventor of the game) hits the hole, but when he reaches for the ball, he is pulled into the hole himself, and Gargamel departs with an evil laugh, noticed by Handy, who decides to inform Papa Smurf immediately. As he runs through the bridge, the bridge collapses and he almost fall into the river but is fortunately saved by Papa Smurf. Handy explains what happened, but without the bridge they're cut off from the forest, so Handy thinks of another way to save the others.

Super Balls to the Rescue (A Hole in Smurf)

While Gargamel is preparing the Smurfs for dinner, Handy calculates the golf shots that might save them while Papa prepares to hit five of Handy's super balls. Handy's calculations prove to be correct as Gargamel is just carrying the Smurfs towards the oven when the super balls fly all over his hovel, crashing and destroying everything in their way. Gargamel drops the pot with the Smurfs and locks himself and Azrael into the closet, while the Smurfs run away. Gargamel hears them and opens the closet to run after them, but closes again as he gets hit by the super balls.

Back at the village, the Smurfs apologize to Papa, who tells them there's nothing wrong with playing games as long as they finish their responsibilities. Papa returns to his lab and Handy orders the others to help him build a new bridge. Golf Smurf proposes to build a new golf court afterwards, but Handy wonders if Papa would approve, to which Hefty shows Papa Smurf playing golf in his lab by himself.

Trivia[]

  • This is one of the only episodes of the 1981 TV series where background Smurfs have individual lines.

Goofs[]

  • There is a shot of the field with Brainy, Smurfette, and Clumsy standing on the grass. The next shot shows them standing on a ground without any grass.
  • When the Smurfs are released from Gargamel, one Smurf besides Golf Smurf has his hat painted orange.
