Synopsis

The Smurfs are changed into tools while working on their day off.

Plot Summary

Papa Smurf is working in his laboratory when the Smurflings show up at his door carrying a cardboard figure of Azrael. They ask Papa Smurf if he would like to play "Pin the tail on Azrael". Papa Smurf declines the offer, saying he is too busy. The Smurflings go to Smurfette and Tailor, asking them the same question. They both say they are too busy but will try to play with them later. The Smurflings then comment on how the Smurfs should take a day off. Papa Smurf overhears them and decides this is a good idea.

Later, Papa Smurf calls a meeting, during which he announces that the following day will be an official day off. He says the Smurfs may do whatever they want to, but it would be a good idea to give their day off to the Smurflings. Brainy agrees, saying he will make sure this happens.

Brainy calls seven Smurfs -- Farmer, Greedy, Handy, Miner, Painter, Smurfette, and Tailor -- to his house. He tells them they must spend their day off working for the Smurflings. The other Smurfs object to this idea, but Brainy tells them the best way to show their love for someone is to "work your tails off" for them.

The next morning, the Smurflings visit Papa Smurf, who is carrying Baby Smurf (whose rapidly tickling him). Papa Smurf tells the Smurflings that he is going to go exercising with Baby. He also tells the Smurflings that the adult Smurfs were planning on spending their day off with them. The Smurflings in their excitement go to visit Tailor, telling him they are ready. But Tailor says he is devoting the whole day to sewing new play clothes for them. The disappointed Smurflings go to Greedy and Handy, who tell them they are both making bread and building a new playhouse. Snappy comments on how the Smurfs are making new things for him and the other Smurflings, but are not playing with them.

While Tailor, Farmer, Greedy, and Handy work, their tails disappear. The Smurfs continue working until they then transform into living versions of the tools they are using: a pair of scissors, a hoe, an eggbeater, and a hammer respectively.

Meanwhile the Smurflings are attempting to play a game of tag and find themselves too disinterested to continue. To their surprise, they see Smurfette's watering can walk by. The shocked Smurflings then see Greedy's eggbeater fly by. Greedy splashes mud on Vanity, causing the later to comment on the "rude eggbeater". The scared Smurflings run to Lazy, begging him to get up. Lazy says that he never gets up until it's time to go to bed. The Smurflings realize that with Papa Smurf away, their only hope is Brainy.

In Brainy's house, when the Smurflings tell him what's going on, Brainy laughs at the idea of Smurfs turning into tools, telling the Smurflings they have to stop reading silly fairy tales. Sassette insists it is true. She tells Brainy that Handy turned into a hammer, and Painter turned into a paint brush. Brainy just laughs, mockingly saying Farmer Smurf probably turned into a hoe. At that moment, Slouchy looks out the window to see Farmer hoeing the ground. Brainy hears someone beating at the door. He sees Greedy in the shape of an eggbeater, trying to get into the house.

Brainy tells the Smurflings to stay calm. He tells Nat to get the book of 400 emergencies and how to solve them without becoming unsmurfed while he frantically tries to chase Tailor who has assumed the form of a pair of scissors and is trying to cut the curtains out of the house. Through the book, Brainy and the Smurflings discover the Smurfs are sick with a condition called "Workatosis," or "working your tail off". According to the book, Smurfs contract Workatosis when they do nothing but work on their day off. The only cure for Workatosis is to get their minds off work. Brainy suggests a "Plan A": taking the Smurfs to the beach. The Smurflings ask how that will help. Brainy asks them what kind of work the Smurfs could possibly find to do at the beach.

The story then cuts to Tailor, pruning the leaves off a tree at the beach. All the Smurfs have managed to find work to do at the beach. Brainy decides it is time for "Plan B": getting Papa Smurf.

While Brainy is gone, the Smurflings try to get the adult Smurfs to play in the water. They eventually decide they might as well give up, believing they will never get the Smurfs' attention. At that moment, two creatures called Water Harpies appear on a raft. They throw at net over the Smurflings, saying the Smurflings will make excellent pets for their queen.

Papa Smurf, who is holding Baby, and Brainy arrive at the beach. Papa Smurf explains to Brainy that when he told the Smurfs to give up their day off for the Smurflings, he meant "spend time with them". He then notices the Water Harpies taking the Smurflings away. He tells the Smurfs that they must rescue them, but Brainy tells Papa Smurf they will do nothing but work. Papa Smurf tells Brainy that the Smurfs must keep working to the surprise of the latter. Papa Smurf tells the Smurfs with Workatosis that they all need to work on building a raft. They all immediately stop what they are doing and collect materials for the raft.

On an unknown island, the harpies have put the Smurflings in a cave blocked with rope. The harpies are confused that the Smurflings are not playing, because all they did was play at the beach.

Papa Smurf, Baby, Brainy, and the seven Smurfs with Workatosis are on their way to the island. When Smurfette hears the Smurflings call for help, she asks Papa what is wrong with them. Papa says the Smurflings are in trouble, and they need the help of the Smurfs. He then explains to Brainy that the more concerned the adults Smurfs are for the Smurflings, the better their chances of returning to their normal forms. Papa Smurf tells Greedy to propel the raft to the island. Greedy obeys, saying he and the others are beginning to rust.

When the Smurfs arrive at the island, Papa Smurf tells Tailor to cut the ropes trapping the Smurflings in the cave. He tells the other six Smurfs to chase off the Water Harpies. The Smurfs immediately obey him. Tailor cuts the ropes and frees the Smurflings, to their delight. At that moment, Tailor turns back into a Smurf. He asks the Smurflings what happened. The other Smurfs chase away the Water Harpies. They too transform back into Smurfs.

When the Smurfs arrive home, Papa Smurf says he hopes they have learned a lesson. The Smurfs agree, saying their work is important, but not as important as spending time with the Smurflings. They decide to play "Pin the tail on Azrael". At the end of the story, Handy says they will never work their tails off again. The Smurfs line up, and their tails reappear.

Trivia

  • The only adult Smurfs that appear in this episode that do not have occupations are Lazy and Vanity.
  • In the long shot of Papa Smurf's assembly, a Smurf is seen with a net in his hand. Another Smurf can be seen with a comb in his hand. The former can be mistaken for Butterfly Catching Smurf (who only appeared in the comics) and the latter is unknown in name.
