Plot Summary[]

The Purple Smelly Hatchling

He's such a cute little stinker!

Dreamy is lying on his stomach high upon a hill overlooking the Smurf Village as he looks up in the stars and watches for the shooting stars, anticipating three more days until they come. He sees one up in the sky and eagerly goes to wake up Papa Smurf to tell him about the first shooting star he saw. Papa Smurf barely expresses how happy he is for Dreamy, but he tells the young Smurf that they still have a lot of work to do until the day arrives and that he should go to bed. Yet Dreamy can't go to sleep, as he from his window still looks up at the stars and says it's three more days.

Meanwhile, Gargamel is paid a visit by a delivery person with a package that came all the way from the steppes of central Asia, woken up from his sleep as he was muttering about getting the Smurfs. He is pleased to receive his package after waiting a long time for it to be delivered, but when the delivery person makes a hand motion that indicates that he needs his payment, Gargamel gives him a shove out the door.

By morning of the next day, the Smurfs are busy in their preparations for the day of the shooting stars by decorating the village with stars: star garlands, star backdrops, star vases, star tablecloths, and even painting stars on Smurf houses. However, Baby Smurf couldn't resist playing with one of the tablecloths, which draws the attention of Vanity as he constantly has to keep Baby from dropping a vase right on top of himself. In the midst of the preparations, Poet feels the urge to share a poem he was written for the occasion of the coming day.

In Gargamel's hovel, the wizard opens the crate and finds an egg and a scroll of instructions for its use but is appalled that the instructions were written in Tibetanese. He goes through the work of translating the instructions and finishes it by the time the evening star appears in the sky. Following the instructions, Gargamel paints stars on the egg and recites the enclosed incantation to make the egg foul.

It is finally one more day, and a group of Smurfs go out into the forest carrying a wagon with them to get some things for the final preparations, which Brainy has to give his fellow Smurfs a reminder of before they toss him far onto his head. Upon his landing, though, Brainy sees an egg with stars on its shell and calls every Smurf's attention to it. They stare and wonder what kind of egg it is, and Brainy tries to answer only to find himself at a loss for words, simply to say that he found it. Soon they are carting the egg back to the village, with Brainy feeling proud about telling Papa Smurf about his amazing discovery. Meanwhile, Gargamel sniffs the air from his hovel, saying it's not yet but very soon.

Back in the village, Papa Smurf examines the egg as everyone else also looks like it, with the village leader commenting that he has never seen an egg like this in all his years as an egg lover and bird watcher. Dreamy thinks that the egg came from the stars because of all the stars that are on it, and as Baby knocks on the egg, something inside the egg responds with a knock. Then the egg starts to crack, and from it hatches a purple furry creature with a star on its forehead. But what makes the creature really notable is that it is generating a really foul smell that's making every Smurf hold their noses, with Grouchy backing away from it when the furry creature comes close, simply wanting to be friends. At that instant, Gargamel detects the smell of the creature and says that his plan has hatched. He drags his cat Azrael out into the forest so they can follow the scent straight into the Smurf Village.

The Smurfs are now dealing with the smelly little hatchling as they all wear masks over their noses and mouths, with Clumsy and Handy giving him a bath to see if they can wash the smell away. But even after towel-drying him off, they say that the creature stinks worse than ever. Baby Smurf, the only Smurf not wearing a mask, fearlessly approaches the creature as he gives the blue infant a friendly lick. Greedy tries to get the hatchling to eat food but sees that he doesn't have an appetite. Eventually the smell of the creature is so bad that Farmer's grapes have gone sour, Greedy's last batch of custard was curdled, and Vanity says that even the masks aren't helping. The Smurfs all ask Papa Smurf if there's something they can do, and Papa Smurf says that he'll see what he can do.

As Gargamel now travels through a pond while following the scent trail from the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf and Handy are busy working on their solutions to combat the smell problem. The village leader's attempt to create a deodorizer fails, leaving him coughing when he sprays it upon some flowers. However, Handy's creation of a gas mask works when he tries it out, saying that all he can smell are fresh smurfberries. The only problem, though, is that there's only one of it and a hundred Smurfs, which he tells Papa Smurf. He tells Handy that until they can come up with a better solution, he should start making more of the gas masks.

But then, one of the Smurfs, who was out in the forest, spots Gargamel coming and races back to the village to tell Papa Smurf about it. Papa Smurf realizes that the evil wizard is following the creature's scent and so tries to get Brainy and Clumsy to take it away from the village so Gargamel won't find his way to the village. Brainy and Clumsy try to coax the hatchling to come with them, but he runs away only to tackle Grouchy and give him a friendly lick. Papa Smurf realizes from this that Grouchy will have to be the one to take the creature out into the forest, though Grouchy says he hates doing it, and Handy offers him the gas mask to wear while doing it.

As Grouchy walks the smelly creature out into the forest, causing Gargamel to change direction when the scent also changes direction, Papa Smurf is looking through his books on smelly creatures and finds out that the creature comes from the steppes of central Asia. He realizes that the creature must be returned there immediately and has Harmony play a signal to have Grouchy return to the village, who at this point is carrying the creature because he is now tired. Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs that the creature will die of loneliness and hunger if he isn't returned to his people soon, and with Grouchy returned, he places the creature on a bed carried on the back of Feathers and tells the crane that he has a long journey. The Smurfs say goodbye to the creature as Feathers takes to the air, with Grouchy saying "I hate goodbyes".

After a lot of running around in the forest following the scent until it was gone, Gargamel is now taking a bath to scrub the scent off him while he scolds his cat for his ineptitude. In the village, the Smurfs are now watching the shooting stars in the sky, amazed at the dazzling display as Dreamy and Grouchy light the torch and Grouchy makes a wish that the smelly creature safely makes it home. With Feathers at this point delivering the hatchling to his own kind before taking to the sky again, Papa Smurf says he is sure that he will.

Trivia[]

  • Clumsy is shown annoyed at Brainy's lecturing in this episode. This is before the two were established as best friends in "The Magic Rattle" and on.
