Synopsis[]
A cloud above Clumsy brings bad luck to the Smurfs.
Plot Summary[]
Smurfette is watering her pansies by using Handy's watering machine, so that the water is plenty enough for them to drink. As she is about to water more of her flowers, Clumsy arrives to see if she ever needs help, which she accepts his offer. However, as Smurfette walks away, Clumsy spots a little flower and see if it needs some water, as he turns the handle of the machine - thus spraying lots of water out of the hose and sent Clumsy flying out of control. During the process, he sprayed water all over his friends including Smurfette, Hefty, Greedy, Snappy, Sassette, Harmony, Handy, and Painter. By the time the water had run out, his friends were angered by his spraying actions as he proclaims that there is one thing he is quite good at - messing things up.
Meanwhile at Papa Smurf's laboratory, Grandpa falls ill with the sniffles and Papa's experiment to make the elder Smurf better is unable to work - other than to only make a little smoke. So Papa went to assemble his Smurfs for a voluntary job to get a flower for his experiment from a bog, then Clumsy puts his hand up as he is excited to help - despite several concerns from his friends, which Papa accepts as his klutzy friend sets off to leave the village, only to trip over a bucket and it falls on his head after promising to take Papa's advice to be very careful regardless.
While on this way, Clumsy spots a flower. He picks it up from its roots and tries to walk as carefully as he could. Unfortunately, he then slips into the bog, not knowing it's magic, a black cloud forms and follows him all the way back to Smurf Village.
By the time he gets back, his friends get a surprised look when they see a cloud following him. The cloud also causes chaos, as it causes Handy's invention for Lazy to break. Handy is left to wonder what happened. Something similar happens to Painter, who after Clumsy runs by, ends up ruining his Grandpa Smurf painting by accidentally stepping on red paint. Clumsy runs to Papa Smurf's lab and trips, sending the flower through his window, which makes the cloud go over Papa Smurf's head. Papa Smurf walks out and trips. Clumsy goes over to him and asks if he is alright. Papa questions Clumsy about where the cloud came from, then the other Smurfs run towards them. The Smurfs observe it and see that the cloud has gotten bigger. Clumsy tells Papa Smurf that he found a large flower and tripped into bog. Papa Smurf goes back into the lab to look into it, before tripping again. Hefty blames Clumsy for the misdemeanor and Clumsy offers to take it back to where he found it. Hefty sees this as a good idea, while the Smurfs that run after them trip.
Clumsy and the other Smurfs go to the bog, but suddenly, the cloud becomes little, causing a tree to almost fall on him until Hefty saves him. He then sees that there's no way to get rid of the cloud and thanks to Clumsy, they're doomed. Another tree falls and the Smurfs run away.
Painter tries to hide in his house, but the thunder from the cloud his paint cans to fall on Painter. Lazy also hides in his house, but his bed breaks. Hefty is determined to not let Clumsy's cloud ruin his day and tries to excessive, but one of his barbells falls, causing it to hit the other barbells and they hit the closet Hefty hides in. He is now unable to open the door, as the barbells are blocking it.
Clumsy blames himself for the mess while in Papa Smurf's lab and with Grandpa. Grandpa tells Clumsy that everyone makes mistakes now and then. Papa Smurf sees that the cloud is a "castaway cloud" from the forbidden black bog and its shadow causes misfortune to anyone who is under it. He also sees that the only way to cure the cloud is giving it a silver lining. Clumsy asks where they're going to find it and Grandpa says he knows a man named Glut, who can help them with their problem. Just then, Papa Smurf hears the cloud worsening and they must do something fast.
Before Papa Smurf and Grandpa leave on Feathers, Clumsy offers to come with them and Papa Smurf accepts, saying they could use a helping hand. Clumsy gets on the crane, though Feathers briefly almost crashes into a chimney.
In Glut's residential area, he sings a song about him owning everything. Grandpa, Papa Smurf, and Clumsy arrive, with Glut and Grandpa getting into an argument. Clumsy says they don't want any of his stuff, but they want a silver lining. Glut denies that he has one and even if he did, he wouldn't give them it. Glut says the one thing he doesn't have one thing... Smurfs. He captures Papa and Grandpa but Clumsy bumps into him. He helps Glut up and suddenly splits the cloud. Glut likes the cloud, but Papa Smurf warns him that the cloud is dangerous. Glut doesn't believe it - at least, not until he almost gets crushed by a tree. Just then, Clumsy finds the silver lining in his coat, but Glut hides it. Grandpa says without the silver lining, they will never be cured of the curse. Glut wants to just use it for himself, but Papa Smurf assures him that the silver lining will only work if they wrap the cloak together.
Back in the village, the Smurfs are too afraid of going outside, and the cloud destroys Greedy's house, causing him and a couple of other Smurfs to run away. Papa Smurf, Grandpa, Clumsy, and Glut return to the village with Feathers, but Glut is being reluctant in going on this mission. Clumsy then realized that the silver lining's magic is blowing away and holds onto it. However, he almost floats away, and Glut holds onto him, with the latter telling Clumsy to let go of the silver lining. Clumsy refuses and propels it to the village, where Clumsy puts the silver lining on the cloud before getting saved by Feathers and crew, turning it into a normal cloud. The village is now back to normal and Papa Smurf thanks Clumsy for saving them.
Later, the Smurfs celebrate Clumsy's victory, earning a kiss from Smurfette, an apology from Hefty and earning dumbbells, and a cake from Greedy. Clumsy says that he's only helping his friends like he always does, while Grandpa says he and the others are grateful for that. Just then, Grandpa sneezes, causing Clumsy to fall in the cake. However, he licks it and says being Clumsy isn't so bad after all.
Trivia[]
- This is one of the only two episodes of the 1981 TV series where Clumsy is the main character and his best friend Brainy doesn't appear. The other is "Mud Wrestling Smurfs".
- In his only scene in the episode, Grouchy says "I hate being doomed!" upon the Smurfs seeing the dark cloud, though he has a shocked expression instead of his angry face.
Goofs[]
- When the Smurfs angrily approach Clumsy, Greedy's apron is missing.
- Hefty can be seen with both tattoos on his arms when he, Greedy, and Painter say "You can smurf that again!".
- When Handy pulls the lever for the bed invention he made for Lazy, his tail is uncolored.
- As Smurfette and Handy notice the cloud, their voices are unusually deep, though Handy's goes back to its regular pitch when he says "Only now it's bigger!".
