"Clumsy Not Clumsy" is the ninth episode of Season 1 of the CGI TV series, The Smurfs.

Characters[]

Summary[]

Hefty, Clumsy, and Smurfette are out in the forest collecting blueberries and singing the Smurf song when they encounter Gargamel in the forest catching a bunny. The three try to quietly sneak away when Gargamel's back is turned on them, but Clumsy ends up tripping over his feet, turning Gargamel's attention on them. The three Smurfs make a run for it, but as they try to leap over a rock, Smurfette ends up being smacked by a stick due to Clumsy's klutziness, making her easy for Gargamel to snatch her up. Hefty does a pole-vault attack straight into Gargamel's stomach, causing him to let go of Smurfette. Azrael then chases after the three Smurfs as they head toward the river. Hefty and Smurfette escape by leaping onto a passing log, but Clumsy ends up being snagged by Azrael's paw and would have been devoured by the cat if it weren't for Gargamel catching the Smurf and taking him away from his pet.

Later in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard gets Clumsy's attention by showing him a magic amulet that he claims can make its wearer the opposite of what they actually are. To prove it, Gargamel sticks the amulet on the head of a bunny, which then turns mean and ferocious. Clumsy looks at the amulet and imagines himself being graceful enough to be the one who rescues Smurfette. He tries to reach out for it, but Gargamel pulls it away, saying that he won't give away that little something for nothing. Gargamel offers to give the amulet to Clumsy if he would show the wizard the way to the Smurf Village. Clumsy refuses, and so Gargamel decides to take away the amulet. But as Gargamel puts the amulet into his robe, it drops out along with a key to Clumsy's cage. Clumsy takes both items and uses them to escape, but Azrael soon spots him and chases him to the door, where Clumsy slips out while a pot drops on top of Azrael. Gargamel tells Azrael that letting Clumsy have the amulet is part of his plan, for the amulet is also a tracking device that will let him find the Smurf Village.

Back in the village, Hefty and Smurfette warn their fellow Smurfs that Clumsy has been captured and that they need to rescue him. But they are surprised to find that Clumsy has managed to escape, and not only that, proves to be graceful with some dance moves that impress Smurfette (not to mention a whole sequence of Clumsy dancing around and riding in the scoop of Farmer's tractor, just chilling out as if he hasn't got a care in the world).

Opposite Amulet that Makes you the opposite of what you are (Clumsy Not Clumsy)

Hefty wonders how Clumsy is able to do that, and Clumsy shows him the amulet he was wearing in his hat that enables him to be the opposite of what he is. To show its power, Clumsy sticks the amulet onto Grouchy's hat, and Grouchy goes from being sour to being sweet in an instant. Hefty takes the amulet and sticks it on his hat, and suddenly his body sags under its own weight and he collapses. Gargamel meanwhile uses his crystal ball to track down where the amulet was taken, and in his travels runs into a bear that he runs away from.

Papa Smurf comes over to see that the Smurfs are watching Lazy doing hundreds of push-ups and wonders how Lazy is able to do that. Brainy points out that it is Clumsy's amulet that does it. Papa Smurf then asks Clumsy where he got the amulet, and Clumsy says that he got it from Gargamel. At that same instant, a few Smurfs notice that Gargamel is in the village, but Papa Smurf reacts too late to save himself.

The evil wizard then proceeds to capture as many Smurfs as he can while Clumsy escapes in a well, coming out only to see his fellow Smurfs being carried off by Gargamel in a sack. He then sees his amulet lying on the ground and wonders what to do.

In Gargamel's castle, as the captured Smurfs watch Gargamel prepare something in his kettle, Brainy annoys the evil wizard by demanding to be released. Gargamel decides to take Brainy out of his cage and feed him to Azrael, but Papa Smurf tells Gargamel (and Brainy goes along with it) that Brainy would taste much better if he was cooked in a Smurf stew. Gargamel then puts Brainy into an empty kettle and closes the lid over it before he goes into his garden to find rosemary, one of the ingredients for making Smurf stew. In the meantime, while Gargamel is occupied, Clumsy sneaks in and swings around on a rope, collecting the key that would release the Smurfs from their cages and allow them to escape.

Hefty congratulates Clumsy for his rescue effort, but then the Smurfs realize that Brainy is still in the kettle. However, as Papa Smurf, Hefty, and Clumsy lift up the kettle's lid to help Brainy out, Gargamel returns and realizes that the Smurfs have escaped except for four of them. The four make a run for it, but Clumsy ends up dropping the amulet he was wearing and running into a stool. Gargamel then chases Clumsy around, and Clumsy stumbles as he flees, causing a chain reaction that ends up making Gargamel's cauldron explode, with Gargamel and Azrael caught in the blast radius. Clumsy then sees the amulet on the floor and also the bunny that Gargamel captured, which is now released, and has an idea. Clumsy joins Papa Smurf at the door and they escape while Gargamel ends up having to deal with a bunny that has now turned ferocious because of the amulet.

Trivia[]

  • This episode marks the debuts of Meteorite, Rocky, and Glammy (the Smurf Band that appear in the scenes where Clumsy is dancing) in the series.
    • This episode marks the debut of a Smurf Girl in the series.
  • This is the first episode of the series to have Clumsy's name in the title.
  • This is the first episode that was aired in English, first appearing on YouTube and the Nickelodeon app.
  • This is the first episode in the series in which Gargamel and Azrael successfully arrive at the Smurf Village.
  • The title is a reference to the phrase "Sorry not sorry", which is used to express a lack of regret or repentance.
  • The plot's elements are similar to the 1980s cartoon show episode, "The Smurf Who Could Do No Wrong". The only difference is that Gargamel is the one who gave Clumsy the amulet and not Homnibus, who doesn't appear anywhere in this series as of yet.
  • This is one of the earlier episodes that seem to be delayed and was supposed to premiere alongside "Who Nose?". However, it aired on Nicktoons several times before airing on Nickelodeon.
  • Gargamel purposely leaving a key for a Smurf to use in their escape has been used before in the comic book story "The Reporter Smurf".
  • Gargamel himself sings the Smurf song at one point in this episode.
  • The music that Clumsy dances to is similar to the popular Bruno Mars song 24K Magic. Similar music returns in "The Makeover".
  • The French title translates literally out to “To Be Or Not To Be Clumsy”, a play on Shakespeare’s classic speech from “Hamlet”.
  • This is the first episode in which Gargamel attempts to prepare Smurf stew. This is adapted from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series of the 1980s.
  • The long shot of the village reuses footage from "Where's Papa Smurf?".

Goofs[]

  • In Clumsy's imagination, he is seen wearing the amulet on the right side of his hat. When he first hits Gargamel, it appears on the left side.
  • When Hefty asks Clumsy how he learned to dance, his tattoo and his upper chest are gone, as in the French dub, the Smurf who asked this was not Hefty.
  • In the long shot as Clumsy watches the captured Smurfs in Gargamel's hovel, Chef is missing from Papa Smurf and Smurfette's cage.
  • Hefty changes cages in Gargamel's hovel between when the Smurfs are first shown and when Clumsy arrives in the hovel.
  • When Brainy is rescued, he says "You know that thing about eating you, Dimwitty?", but he is saying this to Clumsy while Dimwitty is nowhere to be seen. An error similar to this also occurred in "Smurf-Fu".
    • However, on Paramount+, the error is corrected so that the "you" in the sentence is removed.
