Dame Barbara (Fr. Dame Barde) is the bossy, overbearing governess of the castle which Sir Johan, Peewit, and Princess Sabina live with The King. Dame Barbara only wants what's best for Princess Sabina. She was voiced by the late Linda Gary.

Appearance

Dame Barbara is a woman in a green dress, has a pointy nose. She will appear to get angry when someone attacks her or disturbs her lessons on teaching Princess Sabina how to be a proper princess.

Personality

She appears in the original comic book story and animated version of "The Smurfs And The Magic Flute" under the respective names of Lady Gripe, Lady Beard, and Lady Prattle, as one of Peewit's magic flute dancing victims. She was totally afraid of Peewit when he had The Magic Flute in his possession that caused her to dance uncontrollability. She is also shown to be aloof towards Peewit and will complain to the king when provoked.

1980s Cartoon Show

In the cartoon show, she doesn't like Peewit at all and tries to hector him any chance she gets. She is the only one in the kingdom who is unaware that the Smurfs are real. She is also unaware that Johan, Peewit, Princess Sabina, and The King are friends with them.

Whenever she is unintentionally and deliberately provoked by Peewit, she becomes enraged at him and prepares to give him karma for his actions. Like in the "Return Of The Clockwork Smurf", where she tosses him into the top of the castle tower for throwing berries at her. Another example is "The Enchanted Baby", where she throws a vase on top of Peewit for running into her blindly with a bale of hay on his head.

Trivia

After Season 2 of the 1980s cartoon, she was demoted to a background character. In the episode, "The Moor's Baby", she was mentioned by Johan that she will take care of the baby. In "Blue Eyes Returns", she makes a non-speaking cameo appearance alongside Sir Johan, Peewit, Princess Sabina, and The King. She hasn't been seen in future episodes since.
