The smell of curiosity gets the better of Greedy Smurf....

In a Roman city of ancient times, a man named Al Fresco is busy tossing a flattened piece of dough into the air, saying that he is going to be a shoo-in for winning Caesar's pizza pie making contest on the following day. His wife, Anti Pasto, comments that he's going to get a shoe in the face if he doesn't get her out of where they're living by the following day. Al Fresco leaves his dough flying in the air for a bit to tell his wife that when he wins the contest, he will make the official pizza pie maker for Caesar himself. As the dough lands on the pizza maker's head, he says that soon they will be rolling in the dough. Anti Pasto decides that she's going to go to bed to dream about all the lira she's going to spend when her husband wins.

After Al Fresco leaves the kitchen to tuck in his wife, the time whirlwind dumps the time-traveling Smurfs into that place, dressed in Roman togas. They land in the pizza maker's ingredients, with Papa Smurf saying that they missed getting home again, although Greedy is glad that they didn't miss having somebody's home cooking. As they try to leave the kitchen before some human spots them, Papa Smurf notices that they are on a high table and that they need a way to get down. Handy grabs some spaghetti noodles and makes a rope for the Smurfs to descend to the ground. Papa Smurf calls for all his Smurfs to go down the spaghetti rope when he sees that Greedy is too distracted by the delicious bread sauce that he's sampling. The village leader grabs Greedy by the foot and drags him to the rope where all of them except for Greedy, who sucks up the spaghetti rope while Papa Smurf is still on it, make it down safely.

But then, they hear Al Fresco coming back into the kitchen, and so all the Smurfs hide and watch as he goes to his oven to check up on the pizza that he's baking. Greedy's nose gets a whiff of the pizza and his mouth waters from how delicious it smells. Al Fresco takes a taste of the pie and says that it needs more garlic. As he goes to get the garlic, Papa Smurf whispers for Greedy to come down from the table, but Greedy is so attracted to the pie that he couldn't resist taking a slice and eating it. Al Fresco then returns and decides to make another pizza pie for tomorrow, so he grabs the ball of dough that's sitting on the table, not realizing that he also grabbed Greedy who was hiding behind it and uses the rolling pin to flatten it into the form of a pizza pie. Greedy gets pressed out of the dough by the rolling pin, landing where the other Smurfs were hiding. Papa Smurf then says they should duck into the other room before the human sees them.

Meanwhile, in another house across the street, a man vaguely resembling the evil wizard Gargamel is cooking up his own pizza pie for the contest and having his cat Scampi smell it to see what he thinks of it being a possible winner. The cat sniffs the pizza and shakes his head, and when the pizza chef makes him eat a sample, Scampi gives it a thumbs-down. Offended, the pizza chef dumps the pizza on the cat's head, calling him dumb, and then sits at the table and looks through the window at Al Fresco's house, wondering what he, the great Gargensole, is supposed to do. Then he comes up with an idea: he will cheat by going across the street into Al Fresco's kitchen and switching the ingredients so that he himself will end up making the best pizza in town, and then he will be showered with riches when he wins the contest.

In the room next to Al Fresco's kitchen, Papa Smurf looks at the time crystals and says that they will have to spend the night in there, but tomorrow they should look for a safer place. Greedy doesn't mind spending the night next to the kitchen, if only to get another taste of the delicious pizza the human chef had made. Papa Smurf, however, forbids Greedy from interfering with human events, which Greedy says he will obey. Sassette points out that Greedy has all the ingredients inside the room for making his own pizza, though Brainy says that all they lack is an oven. Handy decides to fix this problem by having Hefty help him build an oven for Greedy to bake enough pizza to satisfy all the Smurfs' appetites. After they have eaten their fill, Papa Smurf says it's time for them to go to bed, for they have a busy day tomorrow.

Greedy, however, couldn't think of going to sleep, for although his pizza was good, he says the human's pizza was better, and he's just dying to find out what the recipe is for that pizza. As Al Fresco is sleeping with his head resting on the pizza dough as his pillow, Greedy sneaks quietly out of the room he and the Smurfs were hiding in and climbs up on the table to find the recipe. But then, once Greedy is on the table, he hears a door creaking open, indicating that somebody else is coming. He quickly runs for cover, but as Al Fresco turns in his sleep, his hand knocks over a strainer that flies in the air and traps Greedy inside it as it lands upside down. The village chef watches as Gargensole and Scampi enter the kitchen, with the human visitor swapping Al Fresco's ingredients with his own, and then they both slip out. Greedy feels that he should warn Al Fresco what's happening, though he remembers Papa Smurf's warning about interfering with humans.

By morning, Anti Pasto comes into the kitchen and wakes up Al Fresco, reminding him that he has a contest to win. Al Fresco wonders what time it is, and his wife says it all depends on whether he has all the necessary ingredients. Al Fresco looks around and sees that he is ready to get started, so his wife decides she will go to get the best spot near the palace to watch the contest, telling her husband that Caesar likes his pizza nice and hot. Greedy wakes up and realizes that he needs to warn the human chef, so as Al Fresco prepares to make his pizza, he is startled to hear a voice from under the strainer calling out to him and sees a little blue chef on the table warning him not to make the pizza because the ingredients are bad. Al Fresco thinks that Greedy is just being a critic, but Greedy points out that an evil man sneaked into his kitchen last night and switched his ingredients. Al Fresco knew the man Greedy was talking about, Gargensole, and when he tries a sample of the ingredients himself, he realizes that the blue chef was right. This makes him wonder how he's going to win the contest now. Greedy says that they'll simply make up a new batch of ingredients together and shows Al Fresco that he's just as great a cook as the human is, which encourages Al Fresco to make his pizza.

Near the palace entrance, Gargensole finishes preparing his pizza and has now put it in the oven, saying that he will surely win the contest. Meanwhile, Anti Pasto is pacing back and forth at the oven Al Fresco was going to bake his pizza in, wondering where her husband is. Gargensole comments that maybe Al Fresco is afraid that he's going to lose the contest to his rival chef, which makes him and his cat Scampi laugh until Anti Pasto gets them both in a choke hold with a wreath of garlic. She tells the chef and the cat that they had better shut up or else she will stuff their nose holes full of garlic.

Meanwhile, in Al Fresco's kitchen, he and Greedy are both busy working on making new ingredients for the contest pizza when Sassette peers out from the other room and thinks Greedy has been captured by the human and forced to work with him. She tells the other Smurfs who all come out of the other room to get Al Fresco to get his hands off their fellow Smurf. Greedy introduces Al Fresco to the rest of the Smurfs, with Papa Smurf displeased with Greedy for disobeying him. But then the town bell tolls, meaning that the pizza pie making contest has just started, which means that they'll have to get the pizza baked and delivered to Caesar in time for them to win. But Al Fresco says that even the fastest chariot can't get the pizza delivered nice and hot for Caesar to test it. Greedy suggests the idea of baking the pizza while they're on the way to the palace, which means that they need to have Handy's pizza oven moved over to the chariot. Papa Smurf says that they have no choice but to help Al Fresco win the contest.

At the palace entrance, Gargensole pulls his pizza out of the oven, nice and hot and ready for Caesar to test it, while Anti Pastor weeps because her husband hasn't shown up yet with his pizza. Then Caesar arrives with his guards, visiting Gargensola's booth to test out the pizza he had made. He finds it to be delicious and is about to reward Gargensola with the first-place ribbon when a chariot comes rolling in, with Al Fresco saying he's got a pizza ready to be tested. Caesar tells Al Fresco that he's already awarded the winner and that he likes his pizza nice and hot, but the pizza chef shows Caesar that he has baked his in a portable oven that was built in his chariot. Caesar takes a taste of Al Fresco's pizza and sees that it's better than Gargensole's, so he gives him the first-place ribbon instead, saying that not only does Al Fresco make a better pizza, but he can also deliver them nice and hot. This make Gargensole so furious seeing his rival win that he pounds his fists on the booth table in frustration, saying that he should get what he deserves. However, the pounding causes his pizza to fly in the air and land right on Caesar's head, which makes him say that it's curtains for Gargensole, as in dungeon curtains, and so has his guards haul off the cheating chef and his cat.

Later on, in Al Fresco's pizza, the pizza chef and the Smurfs celebrate the victory with a pizza dinner made from the Caesar's new head pizza chef himself. As they enjoy the wonderful slice of pizza heaven, Greedy tells Papa Smurf that he's sorry for disobeying him, and Papa Smurf says that it's quite all right this time, adding that what he did was in "very good taste", a comment which makes all of them laugh.
