The Happiness Detector is an invention of Gargamel that he created for catching Smurfs in the 1980s cartoon show episode "Happy Unhappiness Day To You". It acts as a sort of compass, which guides its user to the source of happiness that is nearby, with the ideal target being the Smurfs, since they are usually happy.

Gargamel used this invention to try finding the Smurfs on the day of Unhappiness Day, which is when the Smurfs go through a day without happiness. Unfortunately for Gargamel, who was unaware that the Smurfs are honoring that day, his Happiness Detector led him to four alternate sources of happiness -- Bigmouth taking a bath, a bear eating honey, two dragons passionately kissing, and Hogatha catching her prince-turned-toad -- which all acted antagonistically toward Gargamel for interrupting their happiness. Frustrated by his invention not leading him to the Smurfs, Gargamel completely demolishes it and throws it into the muck pond -- but by then, Unhappiness Day is all over, and the Smurfs are back to being happy, and Gargamel is completely miserable because his invention is destroyed and he doesn't have any Smurfs to show for his efforts.
