Summary[]
Gargamel is chilling out in the forest with his cat Azrael, finding fishing as a peaceful way to think about his Smurf-catching plans. All of a sudden, he hears the supposed sounds of Smurfs and races off the log he was sitting on, sending Azrael falling into the water.
Elsewhere in the forest, the Smurfs dance and pick out blueberries, complete with the Smurf Band playing loud playful music. In spite of this upbeat attitude, Papa Smurf stops everything, saying that they must keep the noise down so Gargamel won't hear them, regardless of it being the blueberry festival. Brainy then assures him that if Gargamel attacks, he has a good plan. Knowing this, Glammy tells his other band members to crank up the music, which Papa Smurf again immediately stops, stealing his and Rocky's guitars and glaring at Meteorite, who throws away one of her drumsticks. Once again, Papa Smurf hears guitar playing, but it is not from a Smurf - it's Gargamel himself.
The Smurfs run into a panic, but from his plan, Brainy stays in position and tells the Smurfs to follow the plan. They (sans Papa Smurf) all then begin to dance and clusters and as a whole. Gargamel tries to catch them, but to no avail, and he eventually falls. Brainy then takes away on a tractor with the others, boldly telling the sorcerer that there is only 1 of him compared to 100 of them, therefore he will never catch them. Gargamel is annoyed at Azrael, who ended up coming late to the capture and says that there is only one of him - which gives him an idea.
Gargamel goes back to his hovel, where he puts several things in his cauldron. He mixes it and puts it into two potions. With a drop of his hair, an explosion occurs, and now there are two of him! Gargamel sees his success and puts two other potions up on his shelf. While he goes to get them, it turns out that these Gargamels are not very much like him - one of these are overly nice and cuddling towards Azrael (which involves him stretching him) and the other is practicing kung-fu. Gargamel tries to explain to his clones that he is planning to capture Smurfs. The kung-fu Gargamel has a plan which Gargamel immediately objects to while the kind Gargamel takes Azrael and confuses him for a Smurf.
The kung-fu Gargamel decides to take green paint and smear it across his face, ready to attack anyone and anything. The moment he sees a bee, he speeds to it and ends up hurting Gargamel with his jump kick. He kicks the hovel door open and runs to the forest with Gargamel confusingly follows him, with the kind Gargamel crawling out of the hovel as well.
The Smurfs are out in the forest once more picking bluebrries, but Papa Smurf is quite reluctant to be here now that he knows Gargamel is around and wants to come back tomorrow. Chef then stops him in his thoughts, saying that waiting too long will result in the blueberries being too ripe. Brainy once again assures him that Gargamel will not be coming back - right before Gargamel himself shows up once more. The Smurfs learn that Gargamel has now made three of him, which causes them to run around the forest. Brainy, however, is not scared and recalculates numbers.
The nice Gargamel captures Smurfette and Vanity, who notice that this Gargamel is much more dopey compared to the normal one. Gargamel himself captures two other Smurfs, though this victory is short-lived as the kung-fu Gargamel kicks him down, allowing them to escape. Gargamel gets angry and yells at his kung-fu clone, giving time for the Smurfs to run them over with Farmer on his tractor. Brainy, unfortunately, did not follow the plan and ends up getting caught by the Gargamels.
The Smurfs arrive back at the village where Papa Smurf congratulates them on the harvest. Before they get to eat like Greedy's demands, Papa Smurf informs them that they must do a roll call to see if they are all here, much to the Smurfs' boredom.
Brainy is now in Gargamel's hovel with Gargamel locking him the cell. However, the kung-fu clone wants to use it for fighting practice while the nice one wants to cuddle it. The three Gargamels end up fighting over Brainy, who gets pushed around in the cell until he yells that he can decide which one of the Gargamels will use him. They begin piling on one another as Brainy tells them he will pick, using a game of Eeny Meeny Miny Moe.
Papa Smurf continues counting the Smurfs. He counts Grouchy, who exclaims that he doesn't like roll calls.
Brainy continues his stalling until Gargamel tells him to pick now. Brainy decides to tell him that Gargamel gets to take him - but they all share the same name, so they end up fighting once more. While they are fighting, Brainy tries to make a run for it, though he is found trying to escape. The three Gargamels try to catch him but pile on one another in the process. Brainy is then stopped by Azrael, who chases him around the hovel. The three Gargamels then attempt to catch him, but nice Gargamel falls on Azrael, followed by Gargamel falling to the ground, and culminating in the kung-fu Gargamel falling onto the shelf. This makes the potions fall until Gargamel catches them. As Brainy hides elsewhere in the hovel, Gargamel angrily tells the two clones that if these potions break, both will disappear and he can't make his 100-Gargamel army. This interests kung-fu Gargamel and the three laugh, while a nearby Brainy is worried.
Papa Smurf continues counting, though all of the Smurfs are tired at this point. He counts Jokey, who manipulates a prank on him.
Back in the hovel, the kung-fu Gargamel is excited to get his hands on Smurfs, though he is stopped by Gargamel, who says he is the original, therefore he gets to be the catcher. Their bickering is stopped by Brainy, who reveals himself - again and again. Gargamel realizes that Brainy cloned himself and used up all of his potions.
The three Gargamels try to take Brainy. The nice Gargamel trips and falls into Azrael's cat food which makes Azrael himself run off. The nice Gargamel finds cat food to be delicious, however. The other two Gargamels try to take Brainy but to no effort as they outsmart him. One of the Brainys scares nice Gargamel, causing kung-fu Gargamel to trip and fall. The last Gargamel corners Brainy, who climbs up his chandelier. Gargamel follows him to it, but not before the Brainys outsmart him and cut the chandelier rope. As they cut the rope, he falls on the two other Gargamels, and as a kicker, the two Brainys break the potions, causing the Gargamel clones to disappear. The final blow is delivering clones of spiders, something Gargamel despises.
Papa Smurf has finally finished counting the Smurfs, but by now all of the Smurfs are sleeping. It turns out he had forgotten Brainy. Brainy reveals himself, followed by a second, and then a third, causing Papa Smurf to faint!
Trivia[]
- The plot of duplication resembles the 1980s cartoon show episode "Smurfiplication" where Brainy had been cloned into six Smurfs.
- The subtitles refer to Gargamel as "Clumsy" as an uppercase C while Brainy is mocking him. It is more likely that the subtitles mistook him for Clumsy, who does not appear in this episode.
