Plot Summary[]
Late in the evening on the hill, Poet reads his newest poem about Papa Smurf's telescope while the other Smurfs are waiting in the line to watch the night sky. While they're arguing over who will be next to watch, Brainy notices Lazy who has fall asleep at the telescope. Papa Smurf wakes him up saying that he was supposed to close just one eye, so Lazy walks away and Brainy is the next one to watch. He turns the telescope to the ground, nearly hitting Hefty and Handy and says that it's so cloudy that he can't see anything. Hefty explains that he has turned the telescope into the ground and Handy takes the next turn. He points out that some stars are creating a picture and finds the Big Dipper which he finds similar to the spoon. Hefty asks if Papa Smurf and Grandpa Smurf can name them all and Grandpa explains that there are too many of them. Papa Smurf now tells that he's late for his checkers match with Homnibus and that they must end, disappointing all the Smurfs. Seeing that, Papa Smurf allows them to use the telescope while he's gone if they'll be careful with it. With that, Papa Smurf and Grandpa leave, while the Smurfs happily start using the telescope again.
Handy is amazed at the stars once more, but all the Smurfs except for him, Hefty, and Brainy are too tired and leave. While Hefty is about to go away with the telescope, Brainy notices a meteor shower in the sky and show it to Hefty and Handy. Brainy proposes to go to the top of the hill from where they can see it better, and they do it.
Meanwhile, Homnibus is waiting for Papa Smurf to make his move. Papa Smurf is not paying attention to the game as he has also noticed the meteor shower and says what a nice night is it for watching stars. Homnibus says that they could watch the stars from the top of the Mount St. Smurf, but Papa Smurf tells him that it is too windy to do so.
That's what Handy also finds, while the turning telescope hits Hefty on the ground. But Brainy insists and say that they must just hold it still and he himself takes the look while his friends unhappily hold the telescope. But as soon as he takes a look through the telescope, it starts spinning along with Brainy and then even flies away with him. The wind stops and Brainy saves himself while Papa Smurf's telescope falls down the mountain. Hefty and Handy help Brainy getting back on the ground. They quickly start looking for the telescope for which Handy says that it's lost. Luckily, Brainy sees it and grabs it, but another, bigger hand is also holding it. A strange man who introduces himself as Scour says that he found the telescope first. Hefty wants the telescope back, but the stranger reminds him that they said it was lost and that he is the Lord of Lost and Found - what they've lost, he's found, and he is not willing to return it! He prepares to put it in the Land of Lost and Found and explains to Handy that he takes what he takes because people leave their stuff carelessly behind. He demonstrates one of Handy's "Handymatic Hider Tool" as Handy takes it and remembers that he hasn't seen it since he lost his old toolbox and also demonstrates Hefty's missing barbells. When Handy asks if they can have the telescope back, Scour declines and says nothing lost can ever come back as he's around. Hefty attempts to get the telescope himself but ends up being flung away. Scour insults the three Smurfs as he disappears into thin air.
However, as Handy and Brainy beg for him to take anything from them in return. Scour comes back and is interested. The three Smurfs then say they can make a trade, but the things they offer are not up to Scour's interests, angering Brainy and makes him ask what can be more interesting than his books and Scour says he'll learn that answer in the morning. He disappears again.
Brainy, Hefty, and Handy return to the village, where they are fine and normal. Also, just in time too, as Papa and Grandpa come back. As they successfully cover up their lie, Papa Smurf says they can tell him about it in the morning as he takes the telescope and thanks them for taking "good care" of his telescope. Handy is upset and asks if they should tell Papa Smurf about Scour and the Land of Lost and Found, but Brainy assures them that it doesn't matter, as they have gotten the telescope back. Hefty questions what Scour will want in return, but Brainy also assures him, but the thought of losing their favorite stuff makes Hefty and Handy run away. Brainy wonders what got them running away.
Handy finds it hard to pick over his tools, but sees that if Scour wants a tool, he wants to pick his least favorite tool. He thinks about his old hammer but realizes Grandpa gave him this and declines this idea. The same also goes for his painting machine, which he remembers as painting his first Smurf house with it. Hefty finds the same problem with his dumbbells and sees that Scour could possibly take his finger flexer dumbbell and unleashes his collection of dumbbells in his closet. Brainy finds it hard to decide which of his "greatest" books can he give to Scour but has also stuffed his books in a closet and they all come out. Scour simply cackles and wishes the three Smurfs happy dreams via his magic mirror. As he now knows what the three Smurfs are into, he can take their own personality. He takes their essence away through the chimneys and will miss their most valuable possessions: Hefty's strength, Handy's handiness, and Brainy won't even be able to remember his own name!
Next morning, Handy finds none of his tools are missing and quickly changes, because he and Hefty promised to help Grandpa fix his magic balloon. As he lifts his toolbox, he drops it on his leg and screams of pain. Hefty also finds nothing is missing and decides to work out but struggles with a light barbell. Handy opens the door of his house, through which he falls, grounded by the barbell he's trying to lift. Handy picks it up by ease and wants to return it to Hefty's closet, but a bunch of barbells fall on them.
When they arrive to the balloon, Grandpa has already leaned the ladder to it and mentions that they're late. Handy gives Hefty his toolbox, but Hefty can't hold it and falls down, surprising Grandpa. Handy calls Hefty to hold the ladder while he's hammering and as soon as he begins, he hits his hand with the hammer and loses balance. Unfortunately, Hefty isn't able to hold the ladder without any strength and falls down again, while Handy hangs from the balloon. Handy calls for help and Grandpa bring another ladder to save him. Hefty and Handy discover that something is wrong with them today, and Grandpa tries to comfort them. He then sends them off and says they'll finish tomorrow. As they leave, Brainy comes by and when Grandpa calls him by his name, he is confused who is Brainy, and Grandpa is surprised once again.
Papa Smurf comes to lab with some herbs, followed by Brainy, whom he greets, and Brainy still doesn't know his own name. Hefty and Handy enter to make new shelves for Papa Smurf, but Hefty can't hold the planks for Handy when he asks him to, almost knocking Papa Smurf's formulas off the shelves. As Papa Smurf sighs with relief, Handy tries to hammer a plank to the wall, sending it right into the formulas Hefty almost ruined. They leave the lab due to the smoke and explain to Grandpa what has happened. Grandpa finally points out something isn't as it's supposed to be, so Papa Smurf asks them since when they've been acting like this. Handy says it started this morning when he checked if Scour had taken anything, letting Papa Smurf know they have interacted with the Lord of Lost and Found. Papa Smurf and Grandpa demand the explanation. Soon after, they fly with Grandpa's magic balloon towards the Land of Lost and Found. Grandpa says the spell to take them to the land, interrupted by constantly confused Brainy.
They wake up above the mystical Land of Lost and Found, getting stuck on a pile of pots and pans. Papa Smurf warns them to watch their step, but it's no use as Handy sends them to the bottom by slipping on a pan. They make sure everyone made it and leave the balloon behind to find Scour. They walk between mountains of various stuff and discover some of Brainy's books, lost by Greedy, Smurfette, Poet, Painter, Hefty, Handy, and even Papa Smurf himself. Papa Smurf comments that they should all be more careful with Brainy's gifts, no matter how much they dislike them and pointlessly apologizes to Brainy. Hefty, Handy, Grandpa, and Papa Smurf then also find some of their missing stuff when Scour shows up. Papa Smurf confronts him, but Scour says it was all part of the deal, and stops Hefty, who rages towards him without any strength and blows him away. Papa Smurf demands his Smurfs' abilities back, and Scour proposes another deal - if they make it back to their balloon before sunset, he'll return their abilities and everything they manage to bring with themselves. But it's not that easy, as he sends the balloon far away into the land and unless they make it, they'll be stuck in the land as well.

They soon come to a deep canyon on their way, but luckily Grandpa comes up with an idea to get over it. He ties some of the lost clothing around his ankle and with Papa Smurf's help catapults himself through the canyon using his own harp. He ties the clothing rope on the other side, and the others slide across the canyon on it using Grandpa's harp. All the strings on the harp tear apart, but they manage to arrive to the other side. Scour shows up and congratulates them for crossing the Castaway Canyon, adding that it won't be that easy coming across the Lake of Left Behind and pointing out that sundown is near.
They float through the lake on a raft made of their stuff and suddenly Hefty falls overboard into the water. Grandpa tries to get them near Hefty, who's being taken towards the Forgotten Falls, where Scour sits and observes. Luckily, they save him before the accident, but crash onto the land right after that. They can now see their magic balloon, but Scour says they should give up, as the sun will disappear any minute now. Grandpa rushes into the pile of pots and pans, on which the balloon is tied, and a pan drops onto him, giving Papa Smurf an idea. He starts pulling more objects out of the pile to bring the balloon down to them, and the others come to help. They manage to collapse the whole pile, and the balloon gets down to them, and so does Scour, with their abilities being released. Hefty can now lift the pot they're under, while Brainy is confused what has happened. They put all their things into the balloon and climb in while Scour approaches to surrender to them. As they depart, Scour calls that they'll once lose their possessions, and that he'll be waiting for that moment.
They arrive to the village at night and Grandpa says that he hopes that was the last time they had come across Scour, with Handy ensuring them that they'll be more careful with their things from now on. Brainy says that he can start with his books, angry that everybody has lost them, adding that they'll all get another book the next day, but Hefty loses his temper and sends Brainy flying out of the village as usual.
