Summary[]
Vanity is in his house, admiring his complexion and perfuming himself. However, he notices something really bad and screams. He runs to Papa Smurf's lab and takes a potion while Dimwitty walks by with a fishing rod. Vanity is confused why Dimwitty is fishing so early, so Dimwitty responds with fishing for wild cabbage. Dimwitty in turn asks what he was doing in Papa Smurf's lab. Vanity tells him that he has a pimple on his nose, and he is going to use an anti-pimple ointment from Papa Smurf. Vanity tells him that this will be their little secret. Dimwitty asks for some carrot juice, and they go to Vanity's house for it.
In Vanity's house, he tells Dimwitty to bring the ointment who gets a carrot and then a broom, much to Vanity's annoyance. He puts a lot of it on and panics that he put too much on it. Suddenly, a poof sound emerges as he worriedly asks if he is okay. Then, he takes his mirror and sees that he's... a lizard! He screams and faints.
In Papa Smurf's lab, he sees that Vanity is a lizard and says he shouldn't have taken the ointment without his permission. Papa Smurf tells him that this is a complicated problem and that it might take some time. He tells him to go home, be patient, and learn to be a lizard.
The Smurfs have overheard that Vanity is a lizard and they begin asking him various questions and touch his body scales. The Smurfs begin playing in a circle and Vanity tells them to leave him alone. He crawls onto a Smurf house as Jokey says they could enter him in a beauty contest for reptiles as he laughs. Vanity ends up breathing fire, which scares the Smurfs. They yell fire, which alerts Clumsy and Dimwitty to awaken and get into their fire truck immediately. They drive through the Smurf Village, until they reach their destination. Clumsy asks where the fire is, and a Smurf directs him to Vanity. As he is about to shoot water, Smurfette stops him and berates the Smurfs for making fun of Vanity. She takes his hand, and they walk away. Clumsy is very confused.
In Vanity's house, Smurfette gives Vanity his flower and says he's still him underneath his scales. She tries to comfort him by saying she wishes she had skin like him. Vanity says she doesn't and that he is a hideous monster now. Smurfette tells him "Beauty isn't skin deep" and says he's beautiful on the inside. She tells him to repeat after her: he is beautiful inside and out. Vanity repeats and has more confidence. They go to have dinner.
At the dinner place, Vanity is still upset as the Smurfs start commenting to each other on his looks. Smurfette tells them to be nice to Vanity, to which they all say yes to. When he tries to eat some food, he ends up dropping them and as he complains, he ends up using his tongue to eat it. The Smurfs are impressed, and they want him to do it again. He does it again and they enjoy his new skills. Smurfette winks to Vanity about this newfound respect and uses his long tongue to imitate Brainy, uses it to eat Greedy's cake, and hit a book, a mallet, and Jokey's present. Just then, Chef comes by and unhappily says they can't roast marshmallows as he is out of wood. The Smurfs are upset until Vanity breathes fire on the marshmallows. Vanity is happy about his popularity, and so is Smurfette.
At night, Smurfette tells Vanity today was not a bad day, though she rushes her goodnight when Vanity starts breathing fire again. He goes onto the floor and sleeps there.
In the morning, Smurfette goes to Vanity's house, but notices he is not there. She sees him playing with Baby, who is riding on his head. Smurfette notices he's in better spirits today. Vanity tells her that he had the best sleep in his life and thinks of all the positives of this situation. Just then, Chef arrives to tell Vanity that he needs him to lightly touch fire to his Crème brûlée. He breathes some fire, and he is prepared to do the finishing touch of sugar - that is, until Vanity sneezes, causing the food to get burnt while various Smurfs yell about fire and Baby is now crying. This alerts Clumsy and Dimwitty again to awaken and get into their fire truck again. They avoid a collision with Lazy out on the street and they use the hose, which accidentally hits Vanity as he crashes into a tree. As Jokey is about to give a Smurf a gift, Vanity falls into his house, where he ends up setting all of the presents off. The Smurfs complain about his fire power now and Vanity runs off into the forest. Smurfette calls them out and says they have nerve accusing him when it was Chef who asked him for the flames. She leaves as they feel guilty.
While out in the forest, the Vanity lizard sulks on a rock. A fellow lizard comes up to him, but Vanity tells him to go away. Meanwhile, Smurfette and Hefty are in the forest looking for Vanity as Smurfette worries about him. Hefty tells her they'll find him, but then, they see a lizard run past them. Elsewhere, Gargamel and Azrael are out in the forest and they hear the two Smurfs. They follow the noise. The two Smurfs run after "Vanity", and they catch the lizard. Smurfette suddenly realizes that the lizard is not Vanity, as he does not have his flower. She screams while the lizard runs off and encounters Azrael. Gargamel takes Hefty and Smurfette as he says it's a good day. The Vanity lizard watches and is more determined to save them.
In Gargamel's hovel, the evil wizard dumps Smurfette and Hefty in his pot as he cackles. They threaten to beat him up, but he just laughs and mocks them. He gives them a carrot, which crushes Hefty as he says it's his last one. As Gargamel looks for the formula for the Philosopher's Stone, Azrael notices the Vanity lizard has entered the hovel and he tries to tell him, but Gargamel dismisses it as a normal lizard. Vanity attempts to go inside the pot, but Azrael catches him, and he falls down. As Azrael is prepared for a meal, the Vanity lizard burns Azrael and then Gargamel, who runs around screaming. Hefty and Smurfette get out of the cage and they, along with Vanity, leave the hovel while Gargamel cools off in a bucket.
The three arrive back at the village, where Baby is crying loudly. The Smurfs greet Vanity while Baby plays on Vanity. Vanity begins to see the beauty of being a lizard... at least until Papa Smurf comes back with the antidote. Vanity takes it, but there's a twist - he's a spider!
Trivia[]
- In this episode, Gargamel's motives for using the Smurfs for the creation of the Philosopher's Stone is present as in the comics.
- The plot of a character turning into a lizard somewhat resembles that of "The Smurf's Apprentice". It also borrows elements from "A Loss Of Smurf", especially where Vanity as a lizard eats cookies with his tongue.
- One of Vanity's pictures in his house use a 2D design akin to the comics.
- Clumsy and Dimwitty's operation of the fire brigade is reused footage from "Smurf-Fu", though the footage ends after they begin driving.
- The scene where they are summoned where there is a fire again only reuses the scene where they pass Lazy.
- The scene where Jokey and the Smurf he was going to give a present to have several boxes blow up in his face is very similar to "My Smurf The Hero". Vanity also says, "Watch out!" like Scaredy in that episode.
- The scene where Clumsy and his hose are in the air reuses footage from "DRIIINNGGGGG!". However, Dimwitty was the Smurf that was holding onto the hose.
- Clumsy and Dimwitty's poses are similar to the ones they did in "DRIIINNGGGGG!".
- Similar to "The Smurfs Show", the scene where Gargamel dumps Smurfette and Hefty in his pot is similar to the fluid animation in "Who Nose?".
