Leprechauns are green-suited humanoid figures seen in the Smurfs cartoon show who usually carry pots of gold and walk on rainbows. As they have originated from the Emerald Isle, they speak in an Irish accent. The leprechauns that exist on the Emerald Isle tend to be rather mischievous and use their magical powers to play pranks on those they visit. However, it is said that whoever catches one of those types of leprechauns will be able to have their wish granted. Leprechauns posses magic shoes that give them the ability to walk on rainbows and just about any surface, including walls. Because of these shoes, Leprechauns are one of the few beings that can freely come and go from the mysterious Land Of Myth that can only be entered via rainbows.
Michael is the leprechaun that the Smurfs have encountered in their forest, with his first appearance being in "How To Smurf A Rainbow". He came out to set a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow that the Smurfs were creating on Rainbow Day when the Smurfs created an incomplete rainbow due to the lack of yellow used in the spell to create the yellow in the rainbow. Michael offered the use of his gold in the rainbow to complete the rainbow, knowing that he will able to retrieve it at the other end. Michael later appeared in two other episodes, "The Little Orange Horse With The Gold Shoes" and "Blue Eyes Returns", in both cases interacting with Blue Eyes the pegasus.
In "Shamrock Smurfs", Jokey Smurf disguised himself as a leprechaun in order to irritate Brainy, while Greedy transformed himself into one by eating an enchanted stew made of shamrocks. This transformation would have remained permanent had not Brainy wished for Greedy to return to normal when he had caught Greedy.
In the 2011 Smurfs film, Peyo as their historical legend documentor likens the Smurfs to leprechauns, stating that they give whomever they visit good luck.
