Trivia[]

  • Marco is based on Marco Polo.
    • Like Odysseus, a captured Marco is enthralled by Marina's singing while tied to the mast of the Pepper Pirates' ship. And like Odysseus' crew, Handy, Brainy, and Hefty have their ears covered with cotton so they aren't under Marina's spell.
      • The place the Smurfs rescue Marco is "Port Pepper", based on a city called "Port Royal" located at the end of the Palisadoes at the mouth of the Kingston Harbour, in southeastern Jamaica destroyed by an earthquake in 1907 after severe hurricanes regularly damaged it.
    • When Handy wishes on a star, he says "Star light, star bright, the first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish..." is a part of an English nursery rhyme that appeared in The Last Starfighter, I Dream of Jeannie, In The Navy, Star Trek: The Original Series, and Pinocchio, as well as forming some of the lyrics to Madonna's song "Lucky Star", and as well as forming the name and some lyrics of the "Star Bright, Star Lite" song by Syl Johnson.
    • The "Jolly Pepper" is obviously based on the "Jolly Roger".

Goofs[]

  • There are initially six Smurfs who sail on the raft to raise the S.S. Smurf II: Dreamy, Marco, Brainy, Papa Smurf, Handy, and one unknown male Smurf. Later, Smurfette appears, then she disappears again. At the end there are eight Smurfs on deck and Handy is sitting out in the lifeboat. The gigantic cork that Handy uses is never shown on the raft.
