Synopsis
Farmer wishes Gourdy would find a new master, and the genie ends up being controlled by Scruple.
Plot Summary
The story begins with Farmer pushing his wheelbarrow around his fields with his genie friend Gourdy following him around, asking his master what is wrong with him today. Farmer says that he wishes that Gourdy would stop hovering around him like a swarm of pesky gnats. Gourdy understands and makes himself disappear, although he reappears behind Farmer as he inspects a bush full of smurfberries. Farmer sees that the smurfberry crops are lean and that they might not be able to see them through the winter. Gourdy sees that his master needs more smurfberries, and so with his magic he makes a storm cloud appear over Farmer's head that rains down smurfberries until he is buried under a pile of them. Frustrated with his genie, Farmer wishes that Gourdy would find himself a new master. Gourdy then obeys his master's wish and causes himself and the gourd his master was carrying around to both disappear from Farmer's sight. This makes Farmer wonder where Gourdy has disappeared to.
Meanwhile, in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is writing a list of chores for his apprentice Scruple to take care of while he goes to his mother's house for lunch. Scruple sarcastically asks if his master wants him to crochet new curtains, and Gargamel says that's a good idea before handing the long list over to Scruple and departing. Scruple briefly reads the list before he says good riddance, but Gargamel pops his head back in to add another task to Scruple's list of chores: to fetch him a pile of snail slime for his glue that he intends to use to catch some Smurfs. Scruple mutters disapprovingly at all the orders he has to follow from his master while he's gone.
Back in the Smurf Village, Farmer knocks on Papa Smurf's door and asks him if he has seen Gourdy, saying that he's been looking for him all morning. Papa Smurf says that he hasn't seen Gourdy, and then asks if Gourdy is missing. Farmer says that Gourdy isn't missing, but rather that he wished him away. Papa Smurf says that if Gourdy has fallen into the wrong hands, it would mean very serious trouble indeed.
Out in the forest, Scruple is crawling on his hands and knees, looking for snail slime, while Azrael stands nearby and watches. Scruple complains that he will never be a great wizard if Gargamel keeps treating him like a slave. Then Scruple finds a gourd underneath a small bush and examines it, wondering what it is. Scruple pulls the cork, and a purple mist comes out, scaring Azrael away, though Scruple futilely tries to keep the cat from running away. From the purple mist comes Gourdy, who thinks that his master Farmer has come to take him home, only to find that the one who freed him wasn't Farmer.
Scruple asks who and what Gourdy is, and Gourdy replies that he is a genie. Excited at the prospect of having a wish-granting genie he could own, Scruple tests Gourdy by having him produce a big pile of snail slime. Gourdy finds the wish a bit distasteful, but nevertheless goes ahead with fulfilling it, and soon a giant snail lands on top of Scruple, covering him in snail slime. Gourdy realizes his error and uses his magic again to make the snail disappear. He then goes over to Scruple and humbly begs for his forgiveness, but instead of being upset, Scruple is impressed and decides to show Gourdy off to his master Gargamel. Gourdy wonders what kind of master he has given himself over to this time.
Back in the village, Farmer asks Clumsy and Miner if they have seen Gourdy, and both of them say that neither of them has seen the genie. Then Brainy appears with his magnifying lens, saying that he will never rest until he gets to the bottom of "this mystery" -- only to soon find himself falling into a well and nearly reaching its bottom. Greedy checks his pantry to see if he could find Gourdy and says he couldn't find him as he takes a bite of each food item he thinks Gourdy may be hiding behind. Farmer looks through his closet and finds no trace of either Gourdy or his gourd, and then wonders where he could be.
Meanwhile, Gargamel returns to his castle, clutching his stomach and complaining about the pound cake his mother had made that he had eaten, only to find that his apprentice Scruple is now sitting on a throne in the middle of the room, having a fan being waved before him. Scruple tells Gargamel that he has fixed things up while his master was gone, and soon a parrot lands on top of Gargamel's head, saying, "The loser's back! The loser's back!" Gargamel chases the parrot away and is now fixing to get his hands on Scruple for what he's done to his house. Scruple then tells Gourdy that he'd better do something fast, and Gourdy responds by casting a spell that pins Gargamel to the ceiling. Gargamel orders Scruple to get him down, but Scruple tells him to say "pretty please".
Gargamel then notices that Scruple has a genie beside him and decides he will play along until he can figure out what to do. Scruple tells the wizard to address him as "Master Scruple", a title that Gargamel despises, but nevertheless calls him by that as he promises to obey his apprentice's orders. Gourdy lets Gargamel drop down, causing him to land in a moat filled with alligators that the wizard escapes being a victim of. Scruple then produces "a short list" of tasks that he now has Gargamel fulfill, and Gargamel mutters to himself that this is humiliating.
Back in the village, a group of Smurfs gather around Papa Smurf and Feathers the crane, telling them that they haven't found Gourdy anywhere. Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs that he will go search the entire forest, hoping that the genie doesn't fall into the wrong hands. After Papa Smurf departs, Farmer says that he wishes that they find Gourdy soon because he misses the little troublemaker.
In Gargamel's castle, Scruple is busy living like a king while Gargamel is doing all the housework that Scruple used to do and having to deal with his former pupil's scornful disdain of his performance, dumping the crumbs from the cake he had eaten in his master's face. Gargamel then begs Scruple for just one wish that he would like to have Scruple's genie fulfill, and Scruple decides to grant it, believing the only thing Gargamel would want would be Smurfs. Scruple tells Gourdy to grant his master one wish, and Gourdy asks if that is a wise thing to grant, and Gargamel tries to insult the genie before realizing it would be better to just behave nicely to the genie, and this enables Gargamel to have his wished fulfilled: to be Gourdy's new master. Feeling betrayed, Scruple then tells Gourdy to stick Gargamel to the ceiling again, but Gourdy tells Scruple that he has a new master. Fuming at the loss of control, Scruple watches helplessly as Gargamel has Gourdy restore the wizard's house to normal, and then Gargamel commands Gourdy to bring him every Smurf. Gourdy is surprised to find what his new master wanted, but nevertheless goes ahead to fulfill the wish.
Back in the Smurf Village, Clumsy is surprised to find Gourdy reappearing again, and soon a group of Smurfs gather around the genie, with Farmer being glad to see Gourdy again. But Gourdy reveals his true purpose as he activates his magic and causes a whirlwind to suck all the Smurfs it catches into it, even drawing them out of their houses. Greedy, Brainy, Smurfette, and Farmer clutch each other in a chain as Greedy grabs a nearby tree to prevent themselves from being sucked into the whirlwind. The four Smurfs find out that Gourdy is now under the control of his new master, Gargamel, before they too are sucked into the whirlwind. Papa Smurf is still flying around on the back of Feathers looking for Gourdy with his telescope when he sees a whirlwind full of Smurfs passing by him. Papa Smurf tells Feathers to follow that whirlwind.
Meanwhile, Gargamel is looking through his cookbook to find what he could do with the Smurfs when part of his roof caves in, and the whirlwind then deposits the Smurfs it has captured into a cage. Gourdy appears and apologizes to his master for what he has done to the roof, but Gargamel is too pleased with having the Smurfs in his possession to care. Unnoticed by Gargamel, Papa Smurf arrives and sees that his little Smurfs have been captured and also that Gourdy is now serving Gargamel. The genie humbly asks his master not to harm his friends, but Gargamel wasn't going to let even a little genie stand in his way of having his way with the Smurfs. Climbing onto the table in Gargamel's house, Papa Smurf sneakily writes something in Gargamel's book before he climbs down and finds himself being chased and caught by Azrael.
After putting Papa Smurf in the same cage that the other Smurfs were held captive in, Gargamel decides to go ahead with mixing together the ingredients for his Smurf delicacy, reading aloud everything in his book, including "and I wish for Farmer Smurf was Gourdy's new master," before realizing what he had just said. Gourdy was now pleased to be Farmer's genie once again, and Papa Smurf has Farmer make a wish to have the Smurfs all brought home. Gourdy grants the wish, and soon the Smurfs all disappear from the cage together, only to appear falling into a body of water near the Smurf Village. Gargamel is left crying at the loss of his Smurfs and his genie, but Scruple's comments make the wizard so angry that he chases after his apprentice and gives him a beating offscreen.
Back in the village, Gourdy sees that his master Farmer now has a cold and has him brought into his house, where he takes care of him by giving him a bowl of hot soup in bed, which he accidentally dumps on Farmer's head. Farmer then says that he is truly one lucky Smurf.
