Merpeople (also referred to as mermen and mermaids) are underwater people with the lower half of their bodies resembling a fish.

Physical Makeup

Their appearance may vary as Marina and her father King Aquarius are the size of a Smurf and have green skin and scales. Two merchildren in a different episode had yellow hair and skin and blue tails. Sirene the mermaid had green skin, clothes, and scales as well as yellow seaweed-like fins and hair. They mostly live in the sea in a region called Atlantica. As with fish, merpeople must live in the sea or at least in water constantly supplied with oxygen, or else they will die.

History

The Smurfs first encountered a mermaid named Marina in "Handy's Sweetheart" when she was trying to swim upstream to reach the pools of Avalon to find the cure for her ailing father. Though Handy fell in love with Marina, the two of them realized that neither could live long together in each other's world.

In the episode "Sassette's Bewitching Friendship", Sassette's friend Melina saw that Smurfette was in trouble while surfing on her "smurfboard" and begged for help. Melina did save Smurfette, but too well, by transforming her into a "mersmurf". However, unlike most other mermaids, Smurfette was given a clamshell bra during her transformation.

Merfolk appears as mirages in "Smurfs At Sea".

Two merchildren showed up in the episode "Smurf A Mile In My Shoes" to play a prank on Jokey Smurf when he was stranded on a deserted island.

An update to the Smurfs' Village app game features the return of mermaids, specifically Marina as an accessible character.

In a comic book story, Gargamel accidentally creates a Mermaid Smurfette.
