Summary[]
One morning, Scaredy wakes up afraid -- afraid of his alarm clock, afraid of his reflection, afraid of the cuckoo in his cuckoo clock, even afraid of a caterpillar that crawls outside his house. He hides himself inside a bucket, only to soon be noticed by Smurfette and Brainy, the latter of which says it's time for Scaredy to get over being afraid of everything.
Brainy and Smurfette take Scaredy out into the forest, where Brainy uses Papa Smurf's Hypno-Glasses to hypnotize Scaredy into not being afraid anymore. To test it out, Brainy has Scaredy touch the tip of a sleeping bear's nose while being hypnotized. Scaredy does Brainy's bidding and goes over to the sleeping bear to touch its nose. The first time Scaredy tries to do that, the sleeping bear blows the little Smurf away with his snoring, but on the second try, the sleeping bear moves its face closer, and Scaredy succeeds in touching the bear's nose. He is so excited that he succeeded in getting over his fear that he yells and repeatedly touches the bear's nose, despite his friends telling him not to wake up the bear. But eventually the bear awakens, and not pleased with being awakened, it blows Scaredy into a tree. The three Smurfs decide to make a run for it, but as they run, Brainy drops his glasses and is crawling on the ground trying to look for them when the bear gets closer. Smurfette immediately takes the Hypno-Glasses and hypnotizes the bear into doing her bidding before commanding it to fall asleep again, which it does. Smurfette is so surprised with how powerful the Hypno-Glasses are that she thinks it should be used on Gargamel so that he wouldn't chase after Smurfs. However, Smurfette is hesitant on using the glasses for that purpose without Papa Smurf's permission. Brainy says that it's okay since he is close to Papa Smurf and he knew that Papa Smurf would understand and all that, the rest of which makes Smurfette roll her eyes.
In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is in his longjohns eating leftover stew while his cat Azrael is forced to eat the garbage that is put into his kitty bowl. The two of them are so busy focusing on eating that they don't notice Brainy and Smurfette sneaking in there with the Hypno-Glasses. They climb up to the table, and Smurfette hypnotizes Gargamel with the Hypno-Glasses, saying, "Gargamel, at the count of three, you'll be under the spell of the first thing you see.". This makes Gargamel so drowsy that his face falls into the bowl of stew.
As Brainy and Smurfette wonder if the hypnosis worked, Azrael leaps onto the table to chase the two Smurfs away, though as they leap off the table together, the Hypno-Glasses end up tumbling on the floor until it goes under a dresser. Gargamel raises his head again and sees Azrael and starts meowing, which makes Azrael so puzzled until he starts commanding his master to do this and that, and he does, which means that Azrael now has power over his master. Brainy and Smurfette try to sneak out of the castle while both Gargamel and Azrael are thus distracted, but then Azrael sees them and directs Gargamel to go after them, which he does until he hits a wall, and the two Smurfs escape through a crack at the bottom of the wall.
Back in the Smurf Village, Brainy and Smurfette run into Papa Smurf, who asks Brainy if he's done using the Hypno-Glasses and now wants them back. Before Brainy can say anything, Smurfette says that she has them in her house. Papa Smurf feels relieved at hearing this, adding that hypnosis is "smurfy" and that something can go wrong. After Papa Smurf goes away, Brainy wonders why Smurfette lied to Papa Smurf, and Smurfette says she never should have used them on Gargamel. She decides to go to Gargamel's castle to get them back, but Brainy says he will do that and so gets up on his smurfway and heads off into the forest to find Gargamel. Smurfette then decides that it would be better to go tell Papa Smurf the truth.
In Gargamel's castle, Azrael treats Gargamel like his personal slave, having his cat be set up on a fancy cushion while delivering him the finest of meals and replacing pictures of himself with those of his cat. Azrael then proceeds to have his master run into the same wall again and again, which eventually wakes him up from his hypnosis to realize that his cat has been controlling him. He chases his cat around with a broom, ready to smack him, when he accidentally is force-fed a potion that he drinks which then puts him back into his hypnotic state, asking his cat what he wants him to do. Azrael picks up a Smurf doll and communicates to his master that he wants him to catch Smurfs, and so he leaves his castle to go catch Smurfs for Azrael's dinner.
Meanwhile, Brainy is whizzing through the forest on his smurfway when he runs into Gargamel in his hypnotized state. Brainy turns and drives his vehicle the other way to run from Gargamel until he hiccups and returns to normal, thinking about what he's going to do to Azrael. Then Gargamel hiccups again, and he's back to chasing after Smurfs, then hiccups and is back to normal, and then hiccups and is back to chasing after Smurfs again. Brainy, who ends up falling off his smurfway, is finally caught by Gargamel, who praises his new "master" Azrael until he again hiccups and is back to normal, hitting his head against a tree in frustration of being controlled by his cat. Brainy asks Gargamel what is wrong, and Gargamel says that if he doesn't help free him from Azrael's control, he would turn the Smurfs into kitty chow. Brainy agrees to help, but only if Gargamel does what he says, and that there will be no more hiccups. Gargamel feels a hiccup coming on and manages to stifle it, though he exhales a foul odor that makes Brainy hold his nose.
Upon his return to his castle, Gargamel sees that Azrael is sleeping on his master's favorite pillow and so follows Brainy as they both sneak inside while the cat is still sleeping, with Brainy looking to see where the Hypno-Glasses went.
Azrael awakes to see his master raise a broom up over his head, ready to smack the cat for his insubordination, when the hypnotic state kicks in and Gargamel then turns and captures Brainy, who at that time found the Hypno-Glasses. Papa Smurf and Smurfette arrive in the castle just in time to see Gargamel feed Brainy to Azrael, but the taste doesn't last long in Azrael's mouth before the two Smurfs come swinging down at the cat with a Smurf cage, knocking Azrael into a wall and knocking Brainy out of the cat's mouth, causing the Hypno-Glasses to break in two when he lands. Smurfette deals with Gargamel while picking up one half of the Hypno-Glasses, as Papa Smurf deals with Azrael while picking up the other half. Finally, the two Smurfs join together and the two halves of the Hypno-Glasses merge back into a single piece, and with them Papa Smurf then hypnotizes both Gargamel and Azrael into obeying someone else's commands. On their way back the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf asks both Brainy and Smurfette what made them think they can control Gargamel with hypnosis, and Brainy said that he thought it was a good idea at the time. Papa Smurf then says that at least Gargamel will leave them at peace for a while.
Back in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard and his cat now bow down to their new "master" -- a lizard that has been crawling around the castle, which is now wearing the Hypno-Glasses.
Trivia[]
- The title is a reference to the phrase "Mind the gap" which is an instruction used on the underground in the UK to warn passengers to be careful when leaving the tube or train.
- Gargamel wears Smurf-print Longjohns throughout the entire episode.
- The pan of the village is reused footage from "Who Nose?".
- The repeated footage causes an error, as Brainy is seen in it, despite being with Smurfette at the time.
- There is a moment where Azrael replaces Gargamel’s small-framed photo of himself with one of Azrael. The quickly seen Gargamel photo uses a 2D design which looks very similar to the comic books.
