Plot Summary[]
Handy finds himself chased through the Smurf Forest by a small swarm of bees with drills on their stingers, crying out for Papa Smurf as he rushes into a nearby house for safety, only to find that the bees that drilled through the door, leaving him open to an attack. It turns out that it was all just a dream Handy had while he was sleeping, awakening to find that one of the springs in his mattress is sticking up and poking him. The sight of the bees with drills for stingers inspires Handy to create something, and soon Hefty and Poet gather around outside Handy's workshop as they hear their fellow Smurf at work on another invention, with Hefty complaining about what the last invention Handy created did to Papa Smurf's beard. The invention turns out to be a power drill, but what Handy needs now is a power source to make it work, and so he goes over to Smurfette's garden and scoops up the bees hovering over her flowers to give the drill its power source. Unfortunately, the power drill is now too powerful for Handy to control, and so he ends up drilling holes in Smurfette's watering can, Greedy's pastry (though the village chef is now inspired to call them "doughnuts"), the bar of Hefty's barbells, and the S.S. Smurf II.
After the Smurfs tell Papa Smurf what had happened because of Handy's new invention, which he apologizes for but defends by saying he was just following his dream, Papa Smurf tells Handy to not tread on others' dreams in the process. That night, while Handy sleeps in his house during a rainstorm when the roof is leaking raindrops on him, he has a dream of being in the bottom of the sea, meeting up with Marina the mermaid, who is surprised to see him being there. She asks how he got there, and Handy looks up to see the shadow of a large fish-like vehicle and says that he thinks he came in that thing.
The following morning, Papa Smurf sees Handy at the breakfast table, playing with his food and shaping it into the image of the object he saw in his dream. Handy says that it's an invention that he saw in his dream. Papa Smurf says that what they really need for an invention is something to crack nuts with. Handy first starts off trying to create a nut-cracking invention, but then his dream invention ends up overriding the invention Papa Smurf wanted, and so as the Smurfs gather around outside Handy's workshop with their baskets of nuts, hoping to see the completed invention being unveiled, they are greatly disappointed to see that what Handy built instead was a fish-shaped vehicle he called a "smurfmarine". This makes Hefty so angry that he tells Handy he has wasted his time building yet another selfish invention. Handy gets so upset that nobody appreciates his genius, that he decides to set off toward the seas in his new invention to see Marina and to never come back. As the Smurfs watch Handy launch off in his smurfmarine, Smurfette wonders what they're going to do without Handy, and Hefty tries to comfort Smurfette by saying he'll take care of everything.
As Handy travels under the sea to look for his mermaid girlfriend, Marina is with her seahorse friends Ajax and Hercules, letting her mind wander as she looks down on the ground at the image of Handy that she has drawn, an indication that she is still thinking of him. Then she sees what appears to be a sea monster approaching her, and she tells her seahorses to run as she flees from the monster, unaware that it is actually one of Handy's inventions that he is riding in. He tries to tell Marina not to run as he follows her, but it isn't until she stops running and hides behind a rock to keep herself safe from the "sea monster" that she actually hears him through a loudspeaker and sees through one of the "eyes" of the monster that it is Handy, and so she goes to give him a kiss through the sea craft's window.
Meanwhile, back in the village, Hefty tries to take over as the village handyman to fix up things that Handy would normally be able to do himself. He tries to fasten the wheel on Farmer's wheelbarrow, only for the whole thing to collapse. He tries to repair the hinge on Smurfette's door, only for the door to fall off its hinges. He tries to repair Greedy's oven, only for the oven to explode. He tries to fasten Lazy's hammock to the trees, but the hammock ends up strung so tight that it hurls Lazy out of it to land inside a rain barrel. The Smurfs bring their complaints about Hefty's taking over Handy's role to Papa Smurf, as Hefty realizes how much the village really needs Handy and feels sorry that he chased his fellow Smurf away so that he would rather stay with Marina forever. Since they need to track down Handy so that they can apologize to him, Papa Smurf orders Dreamy to get the S.S. Smurf II ready to sail because they're going after Handy.
Out on the sea, Handy stops at an island to talk to Marina, saying that he's going to stay there with Marina because the other Smurfs don't appreciate him, and she is the only one he loves. Marina tells him that if he really has love in his heart, there shouldn't be any room for bitterness. Handy decides that he's going to get some coral and build a house right on the island so that he can stay there with his girlfriend, but after he and Marina sail off together and collect all the coral, he needs to build his house, a big fish that they pass right by sees the smurfmarine and turns around to start kissing it. Handy tries to pull the sea craft in reverse so he could escape the big fish, but in doing so he rams the ship into a small rock outcropping and drops a rock on the ship, disabling it.
Handy and Marina see that the smurfmarine is now filling with water, so that means Handy has to get out before he drowns. Unfortunately, the rock is blocking the hatch, so Handy is unable to get himself out. Fortunately, though, Marina sees a sailing ship up above on the water's surface and realizes that it must be the Smurfs who came to find Handy, so she goes up to the surface to warn them about Handy being trapped underwater. Papa Smurf has Marina attach the anchor of the S.S. Smurf II to Handy's smurfmarine, then Hefty, Greedy, and Smurfette use their strength to try pulling up the ship, but even with Dreamy throwing his muscle into the works, the smurfmarine is instead pulling the sailing ship under water. Hefty takes Handy's power drill with him and swims down to the bottom to use it for drilling enough holes in the sea craft so he could bust right through and pull his fellow Smurf out of the smurfmarine and up to safety.
With Handy regaining consciousness, Hefty apologizes for what he said to his friend and shakes hands with Handy, rekindling their friendship. The village builder then turns to Marina and says that they need him in the village, which she understands, though he does tell her that he will find a way for them to be together. After returning to the village, Handy is ready to go back to sleep once again and so tells Papa Smurf and Hefty goodnight and pleasant dreams, though he later retracts the "pleasant dreams" part before he turns in, with Papa Smurf and Hefty sighing in relief.

- In a shot where Hefty is arguing with Handy, Smurfette has four eyes.
- When Lazy jumps in his "fixed" hammock, he says "I can't wait to try it out" without moving his mouth.
