"Poet Slam" is the fifty-second and final episode of Season 1 of the CGI TV series, The Smurfs.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

After Poet introduces Lily the art of poetry and rhyme, they agree to battle in a poetry contest, but Poet gets "poet's block", which badly affects his poetic knowledge.

Summary[]

Handy is busy preparing for Poet's recital when Brainy suddenly arrives and asks him if the stage is finished yet. Handy is annoyed and tells him he's not going to get any work done if he keeps asking him every five minutes. Smurfette says Poet should be helping them as it's his own contest. Handy tells her he's off practicing in the forest. Brainy questions this as Poet never has any competition for it.

In the forest, Poet practices poetry and slides inside a log. However, Lily is near and they accidentally bump into each other, causing them to both hit the ground. Lily tells Poet to watch what he's doing. Poet apologizes in rhyme, so Lily does the same. Poet notices that she has just rhymed. Lily tells Poet that the other Smurf girls don't speak in rhyme, so Poet offers to teach her some of his skills. As he is about to shake her hand, Lily shows him multiple moves then claps in his face. She says it's not easy to do, so she could teach him some of her skills too.

In the village, Poet demonstrates to Lily some of his skills and they see Greedy's muffin. Lily notices he wants one and steals it from Greedy when he is not looking. He exclaims in disappointment as he realizes the muffin is gone. Lily gives Poet the muffin and rhymes again. Smurfette walks by and notices Lily is good at rhyming. She says she should compete in the poetry contest, an idea that Brainy also recommends. Poet (begrudgingly) agrees to this.

In Poet's dream, the poetry contest is happening, but he experiences anxiety and fear when Papa Smurf asks him what rhymes with orange. As he thinks of it, all of the Smurfs start laughing and Lily verbally attacks him by saying he'll never win the contest. Poet wakes up fearing she will beat him. He also begins hiccupping.

In the morning, Poet passes by Smurfette, who is trimming weeds. She greets him, saying that it's a nice day. Poet disagrees and says he slept terribly. However, Smurfette notices he is not rhyming. Poet realizes this and runs away, still hiccupping.

In Papa Smurf's lab, he examines Poet and observes that he has "Poet's block" and hiccups. Poet is distraught, especially since he has the big contest coming up. Smurfette wants to help Poet, so Papa Smurf says the only way is to scare the poet's block out of him. He trusts Smurfette and Hefty to help him.

In the forest, Poet unsuccessfully tries rhyming multiple words, not getting over his poet's block or hiccups. Smurfette and Hefty watch and put their plan in action. Hefty runs up to him with a painted barrel on his head, but the barrel turns, and he ends up tumbling off a cliff and onto a branch. Smurfette and Poet watch him, but suddenly, Jokey arrives and offers his present to Smurfette. She pulls him aside and explains what is going on with Poet. Jokey helps them by taking Poet's feather while he helps Hefty and rhymes "curses" with "verses". He notices he officially rhymed again, and it is time for the contest.

It is the moment of the contest and various Smurfs gather around to watch. Brainy introduces both Poet and the new challenger, Lily. Papa Smurf informs them that the poets will take an object from the barrel and recite a poem immediately. If one poet finishes the other poet's rhyme, the winner gets the point. Brainy officially starts the contest. However, when Poet first starts his poem after taking an object, he is stuck, and Lily ends up finishing it for him. Next, vice versa for Lily as Poet finishes her poem. Then, Poet takes a sword out and tells Lily to follow him. She follows him on a smurfboard and dodges all three cans (and she takes one and throws it at Poet). Poet counters and throws the bucket back at her smurfboard, causing her to fall. The Smurfs run after them, with Blossom saying they're at a tie.

The two Smurfs begin saying various rhymes, including rhymes about nails and Farmer's tractor. Later, Papa Smurf introduces the "Sudden Rap", in which he will take objects out of a hat, and they take five seconds to find a rhyme for the object.

At first, it goes well until Papa Smurf takes out an orange. Poet realizes this was the same problem in his dream. He panics and rhymes it with "porridge". Storm says that these two words are not a rhyme, kickstarting an argument among the Smurfs and they fight as objects are tossed from the hat. Lily stops the argument and Poet is about to say the contest goes to Lily, but Lily protests, saying she wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Poet. This touches both of them, as with everyone else. Papa Smurf declares the contest a tie as everyone cheers and throws signs in the air.

The episode ends as Poet and Lily decide to help each other out with their styles of rhymes.

Papa Smurf examines Poet

"Poet Slam"

  • The scene of Poet rhyming from "Funny Mommy" looks very similar to this episode.
  • This episode marks one of the few times in which Poet does not rhyme.
  • The scene where Papa Smurf examines Poet is similar to him examining Storm in "Storm Loses Her Mojo". The scene also includes Smurfette and Hefty, just like that episode.
  • The scene where Hefty's barrel turns the wrong way on his face is similar to Dreamer in "Knight Smurfalot".
  • One of the items Papa Smurf pulls out of a barrel is the rescue team hat from "The Majestic 5".
  • Near the end of the episode, when the Smurfs are throwing their signs up in the air, Smurf pants can be seen.
  • The Smurfs get into an argument when Poet rhymes "orange" with "porridge". In reality, no common English word is a full rhyme for "orange", though there are half rhymes, such as "hinge", "lozenge", "syringe", and "porridge". Slang and otherwise uncommon examples exist.
    • The only perfect rhyming word for orange is "sporange." A sporange is an old botanical term for "sporangium," the portion of a fern in which asexual spores are created.
  • A couple of shots in this episode were notably animated by Ellipse Animation. This is the first episode to use this studio and will continue with this animation starting with Season 2.
