Characters[]

Synopsis[]

The Smurflings train Puppy not to bury everything in the village, but it's too late when he buries Gargamel's tracking bone.

Plot Summary[]

Puppy has been exhibiting some bad behavior in the Smurf Village. As Smurfette is watering her flowers, Puppy walks by with a bone in his mouth. Puppy digs a hole for the bone, but the mud dirties her flower garden. Smurfette tells Puppy to shoo. Disappointed, Puppy leaves and finds a spot near Vanity's house. Vanity is inside putting up wallpaper with his image when dirt from Puppy's digging dirties it and Vanity's mirror. In Papa Smurf's laboratory, Papa Smurf is making a new potion while Brainy returns with the books he borrowed. Papa Smurf needs silence to perform this delicate experiment. Brainy asks to assist and Papa recommends he waits outside. Once Brainy leaves, he sees Puppy digging a hole outside Papa Smurf's yard. The Smurflings also notice. Puppy's digging causes a stone to fly into Papa Smurf's lab causing the experiment to explode and Papa Smurf to fly out of the village. Neither Brainy nor the Smurflings take the blame. Papa Smurf concludes Puppy is lacking in discipline. But just as Nat tries to defend Puppy, Puppy notices a rabbit outside the village and chases after him, knocking the Smurfs down. This causes Brainy to diss the Smurflings' tending to Puppy.

Over at the Smurf Village Dam, work needs doing despite Lazy's desire to nap. The rabbit breezes by as well as Puppy which causes the pile of logs Handy's working on to come loose and roll down the cliff. The rolling logs are rolling after three other Smurfs, but Handy's excavator picks them up in safety. Just as Handy sees the Smurflings chasing after Puppy, he says Puppy should be on a leash. Greedy treats Brainy, and himself, to his smurfberry truffles, but the rabbit runs past them with Puppy chasing, knocking them both down. The Smurflings are shocked to see Greedy and Brainy down. Puppy returns to eat the truffles, which angers Greedy.

A townhall meeting is held where the Smurfs speak their anger over Puppy's recent behavior. Papa Smurf delivers an ultimatum: either Puppy learns to obey, or he's tied up outside the Village. Nat pleads to Papa Smurf saying he'll teach Puppy to be well-behaved. Papa Smurf agrees, albeit skeptically. Nat learns teaching Puppy to behave is harder than he though since Puppy is able to lick his 'reward cookies' out of Nat's hand. Brainy uses this as the opportunity to plug his latest book: Canine Training Tips. Just as the Smurflings are teaching Puppy to fetch, Puppy knocks Brainy over and fetches Brainy's book instead. Nearby Painter is watching Farmer in his smurfmelon farm to paint his latest masteurpiesa. But Puppy digs a hole in the farm causing smurfmelons to fly everywhere including on top of Farmer and through Painter's canvas. The Smurflings try running after Puppy to stop trouble, but it's too late. Painter tells Papa Smurf the whole story and shows him the wrecked canvas. Papa Smurf assumes Puppy is failing his training. Nat pleads that Puppy will improve, but Papa Smurf reminds the Smurflings there's lots of room for improvement as Puppy is burying Brainy's book.

Nearby, Gargamel is with Azrael in the forest as they hear the Smurflings. They hide under a bush as the Smurflings unsuccessfully get Puppy to jump without a cookie. Snappy suggests they try to get Puppy to fetch a bone again and Sassette throws it. Puppy takes the bone and runs off. As this fails, the Smurflings give up, as no matter what they try, Puppy will bury their belongings in the village. Gargamel hears this and sees that Puppy will eat what he catches and gets an idea: instead of having a couple of pint-sized Smurfs, he and Azrael can get the entire village thanks to Puppy. The two walk back to the Gargamel's hovel for some work.

The Smurflings have taken Puppy back to the village to show the Smurfs what Puppy has learned. The dog demonstrates his new moves and the Smurfs cheer... only for the cheering to stop as he continues rolling. He rolls into Painter's portrait, Painter himself, and Vanity, who was posing for Painter. The training has failed and the Smurflings are forced to train him again. Brainy recommends to them his new book No More Bad Puppies: The Brainy Smurf Way.

In Gargamel's hovel, the evil wizard shows Azrael his giant bone for the Smurflings' four-footed friend. He pours in some "directional dust" and the bone is complete. Gargamel pours some "roaming rod" dust to locate them to Puppy. When Puppy brings it to the village, and they'll be right behind him!

The Smurflings' attempts to train Puppy continue failing, with his attempt to roll over ends with him hitting a tree. While the Smurflings are distracted, Gargamel swaps a normal bone with his cursed bone while cackling.

Back in the hovel, Gargamel shows Azrael his Smurf trapping cage, ready to get some delicious food tonight. Just then, they hear the roaming rod move out of the hovel and they run after it, seeing that Puppy has picked it up.

The Smurflings move all the way from the village, now assuring themselves that Puppy can catch the bone without bringing it back to the village, or maybe he can finally catch the bone and bring it back. When they throw the bone, Puppy catches it, but just stands there until he sees a squirrel, which he chases. The Smurflings see that Puppy is still up to his tricks. Gargamel and Azrael continue tracking the bone with the stick but think that Puppy is taking the long way home. While Puppy continues running after the squirrel, Gargamel gets injured in the process.

In Papa Smurf's laboratory, Brainy helps the village leader fix and dust his lab, with Papa Smurf thanking Brainy for it. However, the two see a truckload of dust, with the Smurflings trying to stop Puppy from burying the magic bone. Papa Smurf has had enough and decides that Puppy must now stay outside the village. Brainy supports this idea, as there has been no evidence of Puppy improving and believes that it's because they haven't been using his book. Just then, Gargamel and Azrael show up to the village and the Smurfs and Smurflings run away. As Nat is curious of how Gargamel found the village, Gargamel explains that he enchanted Puppy's bone.

In Gargamel's hovel, he prepares his dinner while one of his ingredients are trapped in a cage. Papa Smurf assures his Smurfs that he'll think of something... he hopes.

Later, Puppy sees that the village is deserted. He then sees Gargamel's tracks and follows them.

Back in the hovel, Gargamel pours several ingredients on their heads. Then, he and Azrael go out the hovel to get some wood while the Smurfs continue panicking. Puppy finds the hovel, just in time. Nat is positive that he can help them escape, but Papa Smurf is slightly doubtful. Nat commands for Puppy to jump and roll over and Puppy rolls into the table, making the cage fall. This does not accomplish anything, but Puppy then sees the key and fetches it for them. The Smurfs then escape without Gargamel's knowledge, but Azrael and Puppy come face to face and trip Gargamel in the process. Sassette claims that they are taking their meal to go and runs off. Gargamel bangs his wood and rants about the Smurfs and pets, especially Azrael.

Papa Smurf congratulates the Smurflings for successfully training Puppy. As a reward, Painter gives Puppy a portrait and Greedy gives him a new bone. He licks the two of them, but Brainy tries to credit himself by saying it was his book that changed Puppy's disobedient ways, but Puppy buries Brainy's book once more, which upsets him and says the village is really going to the dogs, while Puppy licks him.
