Reporter Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Reporter) is a minor character of the Smurfs comic books and the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show and is a supporting character in the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show.
Character
He is the reporter of the Smurf Village and likes to write sensational articles for his own newspaper (which in the comic books is called The Daily Smurf).
Comics/2021 TV series Version
Reporter is a Smurf that wears a large brown hat and a black and green tie. He carries notepads and a microphone around to get data for his newspapers.
Reporter reappears in the 2021 cartoon show, wearing his outfit from the comics, a brown hat and a patterned tie (although the tie has noticeably changed to black and light green). His voice is similar to actual reporters in real life.
1981 TV series Version
This version of Reporter wears a visor similar to Handy Smurf and is often seen with a quilt and notepad. He runs a newspaper called The Smurf Tattler. In "Clockwork's Powerplay", Reporter is seen by Snappy and Sassette doing an all-weather report, right in the middle of a lightning storm. He has an impatient Brainy waiting to get his memoirs printed but his printing press gets jammed that causes Brainy to get a face full of ink. Reporter then thinks it is time to shut down the printing press and to get inside. Then after, the wind knocks over the convert of his printing press.
He is next seen doing a report on Clockwork Smurf's condition, since he is malfunctioning because Handy escorted him in the rain. When the Clockwork Smurf gets repaired, Reporter writes another article about Clockwork's happy ending.
In "A Maze Of Mirrors", Reporter accompanies Vanity, Clumsy, Papa Smurf, Brainy, and Smurfette to visit Homnibus. He gets very happy when Clumsy inadvertently find the Mansion Of Mirrors because he is able to make a story. When a group of Vanitys enter the village, both he and Smurfette fall victim to the Vanity problem. He then makes a news article about the multiple Vanity Smurfs.
Personality
Reporter tends to be very questionable and exaggerates his stories for interesting news, shown in "Cover Story". He is quite protective of true news, shown in "Fake News". He is also quite adventurous, which can get him in trouble; in "Cover Story", he interviews Gargamel in his hovel, not knowing that this is all a scheme for him to get Smurfs.
Reporter additionally has a tendency to look for controversial news, which eventually causes him problems. In "The Reporter Smurf", he comes up with the idea of having the question of who "Smurfette's secret love" is be front page material. This starts a very long and painful ordeal with Smurfette as Reporter is now snooping into her private life and making it public knowledge. Later, Reporter spies on Chef Smurf making a secret meal delivery to Smurfette and sees her give him a friendly kiss, insinuating that Chef Smurf was actually "Smurfette's secret love" -- something that drives Smurfette to tears when Brainy Smurf makes a harmless mention about Chef Smurf not escorting her to the ball of the full moon, causing his fellow Smurfs to turn against him.
When the readers decided that they weren't going to support Reporter writing stories about Smurfette's private life, the paper's readership dwindled, and Reporter turned to spying on Gargamel to find out his plans for capturing the Smurfs in order to get new stories. During his snooping, Reporter was captured by Gargamel, but was purposely allowed to escape with false information about the evil wizard coming up with a formula that would allow him to find the Smurf Village. When the Smurfs that believed him get caught by Gargamel, Reporter escaped to tell Papa Smurf what has happened, who then came up with the idea of publishing a special edition of the newspaper with an article about a disease the Smurfs were carrying that could turn humans who come into contact with them into toads. Gargamel didn't believe the story in the paper at first, but when he saw that his captive Smurfs all had green spots on them and that he also had red pustules forming on his face, he was eventually forced into releasing the captive Smurfs so that he could be spared the transformation, only to find out after releasing them that the red pustules on his face was red paint.
Deep down, he has a caring side like all of the other Smurfs. In "The Reporter Smurf", Reporter had ceased publication of the newspaper due to its controversial news and saves the Smurfs from Gargamel in both that comic and "Cover Story".
