Synopsis
No Smurf believes Tracker that a blizzard is coming, but it really comes, and Tracker is only one prepared for winter.
Plot Summary
It is autumn in the Smurf Village, as Tracker wakes up and sniffs the air, saying what a gorgeous morning it is. He then goes outside and wakes the other Smurfs up with his bird noises. Scaredy cautiously peeks his head out of his Smurf house when Hefty shows up and spooks him with a simple good morning greeting. Poet conducts his "Ode To Autumn" poem before a small group of gathered Smurfs. And Papa Smurf sees Sloppy with his pet Fly feeding him garbage and training him to do tricks.
However, near the outskirts of the village, Tracker sniffs the air and senses that a terrible blizzard is coming. He goes to warn the others about what he sensed, but nobody listens to his warnings except for Papa Smurf. He goes to look in his almanac and realizes that Tracker was right. He has Harmony summon the Smurfs together and Brainy declare to them that an early winter is coming and that they need to prepare for it immediately. Hefty looks around at the climate conditions, though, and says that it doesn't look like winter to him. Nonetheless, the Smurfs do start making preparations for it, with Tracker giving Tailor scraps of fur that he could make into a fur coat and the other Smurfs trying to chop as much wood and gather as much food as possible to store away. Tailor thinks Tracker is crazy, and the other Smurfs find the weather too warm to make such preparations that they feel they can do later as they go for a swim, with Brainy trailing along when nobody is listening to him. Smurfette looks at Tracker's fur coat and laughs at him, as do the other Smurfs, but Tracker is very insistent on telling them that it's going to snow.
Over the course of the night, the weather turns cold, and snow begins to fall upon the Smurf Forest. Papa Smurf looks out of his window and hopes that his little Smurfs have prepared for the snowfall. However, as Tracker shines up his skis, the other Smurfs are trying to keep themselves warm during the cold night. By morning the entire village is buried deep in snow, which the Smurfs burrow their way through just to see sunlight, but also to see Tracker greet them with a very loud and cheery good morning as he passes over their houses with his skis. They manage to plow their way to the path Papa Smurf has made with his shovel, saying that they are so cold. Papa Smurf asks if the winter store of firewood is keeping them warm enough, and his little Smurfs tell him that they ran out. He realizes from the multitude of answers that he gets that his little Smurfs haven't properly prepared for the winter snowfall and has them go inside his house so he can find out how many chores were actually done.
Then, Jokey shows up at Tracker's door with a "surprise" for him to open. It explodes as usual, but as the smoke clears Tracker realizes that Jokey has stolen his coat. Tracker chases after Jokey until Jokey gets stopped by a pile of snow that falls on him, with Scaredy popping his head out of a wall of snow. When Jokey shakes the snow off him, he is no longer wearing the coat. But when he gives a "surprise" to Scaredy and he opens it to make it explode, the coat now appears on Scaredy, who runs off in a panic with Tracker in pursuit. Scaredy then runs into Brainy, Hefty, and Vanity as they are digging out snow, with the three Smurfs playing tug-of-war with the fur coat until Tracker sees that it has been ripped to shreds.
In Papa Smurf's house, the other Smurfs are huddled around the fire, coming down with the sniffles. Papa Smurf, who is stirring up a kettle of water in the fireplace, says it's nothing that a bit of smurfroot tea can't cure. But when he opens the box containing the smurfroot, he finds that he has none left for the tea. He asks Brainy if he went into the forest to get the smurfroot like he asked, and Brainy says he was too busy with other things, so he had Lazy go get it, and Lazy in turn says he was too busy sleeping so he had Hefty go get it. The Smurfs continue to argue until Papa Smurf silences them, saying if they don't get a fresh supply of smurfroot soon, they will all likely catch smurfmonia.
Papa Smurf goes to the only Smurf who is properly prepared to go out into the forest to get more smurfroot. Tracker says he would be delighted to do so, but some of his fellow Smurfs have ruined his coat. To help Tracker fix his coat, Papa Smurf has a few Smurfs sacrifice a part of their pants' footings with the help of Tailor so that he would have enough fabric to patch up the coat. Papa Smurf gives Tracker his final pep talk, saying that every Smurf has smurfonia, then he sneezes, indicating that he has it now. Soon, Tracker is ready to brave the elements to get the smurfroot they need.
Out in the forest, as Tracker uses his sense of smell to find the smurfroot and to dig it out of the ground, Gargamel and Azrael are out looking for food when they notice Smurf tracks, indicating that something succulent is nearby. They follow the tracks to a hole in the ground where Tracker has unearthed enough smurfroot for the village, only to run off as he emerges noticing their presence. Gargamel and Azrael give chase to the Smurf, who runs into a hole under a mountain of snow to escape them. The evil wizard reaches into the hole and grabs a hold of something his hand finds in there, but what he ends up pulling out is a bear, who is very angry that somebody dared to awaken him from his hibernation. Tracker watches as the bear chases Gargamel and Azrael away, telling them to have a good day before he heads back to the village whistling the Smurf song.
In Papa Smurf's house, the village leader is trying to keep his little Smurfs as warm as possible with the last of the firewood, with Sloppy offering his pile of garbage to help things out. But soon they hear Tracker's arrival, and see that he has the smurfroot, which makes them cheer.
The following day, the weather has warmed up enough to clear out much of the snow around the village, which the Smurfs happily shovel out. Tracker sniffs the air and notices that it's going to be hot that day, and so he comes outside with a blanket and umbrella, wearing fur shorts, a Smurf hat, and sunglasses as he lays on the ground with a glass of refreshment, just soaking in the rays. The other Smurfs look at Tracker in disbelief and then laugh, until Papa Smurf comes out and notices that the sun is peering out of the clouds, bringing good weather just as Tracker's nose has predicted. "Tracker Smurf is always prepared", he says as the story ends.
