Plot Summary[]
The time whirlwind appears and dumps the Smurfs on a rugged and barren hilltop, uncertain of where or when they have arrived at. Grandpa Smurf sees that he's got a tear in the short pants he's wearing, but Smurfette is more concerned about the fearful sounds she's now hearing coming from nearby. As Papa Smurf tries to calm Smurfette down, the tree that they were standing next to reaches over them with a scary look that makes them cower except for Grandpa, who strikes the tree with his walking stick, causing it to weep in pain. Sassette tells the tree that they're sorry for hurting him and they didn't mean to do it. The tree's countenance turns friendly before its face disappears and it settles back into being an ordinary tree as the Smurfs watch. Snappy says that they must be in some weird kind of woods, while Greedy walks over to what appears to be a normal-looking squirrel sitting on a tree branch. When the squirrel turns around, though, its face appears rather scary. Greedy is barely frightened, as he understands that it's the face that one makes when he's hungry. He gives the squirrel one of the nuts lying on the ground, and his face changes to that of a friendly harmless squirrel.
The Smurfs don't realize that they're being watched at this very moment by a strange man with wild hair and a scientist's long coat, wondering what kind of creatures are in his forest. He appears to be a teacher of monster students in a classroom, who are encouraged to act rather disorderly so that he can have their undivided attention. He calls upon two of his students Eyegor and Igor to go and turn those goody-goods into baddy-bads before they ruin the forest by making everything nice again, or else they will not be able to attend the big Monster Bash for the graduating seniors that night. The two students reply, "Yes, Professor Von Monster Meester," which makes the teacher so upset that he tells them it's Monster Meister.
Out in the forest, as Papa Smurf tries to work on a new arrangement for the time crystals, Smurfette and a few other Smurfs with her are huddling in fear, shaking as they are hearing the haunting sounds all around them. Smurfette wishes that she could stop the horrible noises as well as her chattering teeth. Greedy tries to offer cookies that he just baked to keep their teeth from chattering, but no sooner do they take a bite of the cookies, the Smurfs end up spitting the bite out. Snappy says that the cookies taste terrible, and Painter adds that they smell just as bad. Greedy tells them that the only thing he could find around the area to make cookies with was garlic, which makes the Smurfs hold their noses at the very mention. Greedy decides to go off into the forest to find something else for the Smurfs to eat, but Snappy feels too hungry to wait around for Greedy to come back, so he takes Sassette with him to go find their own food. As the three Smurfs head off in their own directions, Eyegor and Igor watch and overhear the Smurfs talk about finding food, with one of the students saying that if it's food they want, then it's food they'll get, but food like they never had before, before breaking off into sinister laughter.
After a while of walking, Greedy is sounding fearful, wondering what a nice Smurf like him is doing in a scary place like that. Then he sees honey dripping from a nearby tree and decides to get closer to collect some for his fellow Smurfs, but it doesn't take long before a giant monster bee appears behind him, causing him to run off before he gets himself stung. Meanwhile, the two Smurflings approach a cottage that appears to be made out of candy and gingerbread. The cottage gives off a smell that makes them both hungry, with Sassette being the first to snap off a piece of the house to start eating it. Snappy tells Sassette that Papa Smurf warned them not to eat candy from strangers before breaking off a piece of house to eat it, adding that Papa Smurf never said anything about not eating strange houses.
The adult Smurfs now walk through the forest in search of Greedy, Snappy, and Sassette, trying to keep themselves from being terrified by the strange creatures roaming through it. They don't see Greedy, but they do see Snappy and Sassette both eating candy from the house they have found, inviting the other Smurfs to also join in. As the Smurfs begin to feast on the house, Eyegor and Igor both watch, pleased to see that their victims have taken the bait, and that by sunset it will only be a matter of time before the effects kick in. Seeing that their work is done, the two students decide that it's time to go to the party.
Greedy is now disappointed that he is unable to find anything else in the forest besides garlic that would satisfy his fellow Smurfs' appetites when he hears the sound of someone feasting on food nearby. He goes to find where the sound is coming from and sees that it's his fellow Smurfs devouring a house, and he's upset that they would rather feast on that than on his food, not to mention that they haven't saved any of the house for him to eat. But as Greedy approaches, the Smurfs who have eaten from the house of candy and gingerbread began to feel really strange, until all of a sudden, they transform into monstrous entities and start behaving rather weird.
Grandpa Smurf sees Greedy and tells the other Smurfs to get him before he gets away, and as the monster Smurfs approach, Greedy turns and makes a run for it, stumbling into a patch of garlic during his escape. The Smurfs surround Greedy around the patch, but then they smell the garlic and react negatively to it. Their attention is turned to a strange foreboding castle on top of a hill and head off in that direction, following the sound of the music that Greedy is now hearing as he crawls out of the garlic patch. He ducks back into the patch when he thinks he sees more monsters coming toward him, but as it turns out, it is just Papa Smurf and Painter as their normal selves. Greedy tells Papa Smurf that the other Smurfs have turned into monsters, as in real monsters, because they couldn't stand the smell of his cookies.
Meanwhile, up in the castle where the strange music is coming from, the Monster Bash is underway, with the monster students having fun dancing and feasting. Professor Von Monster Meister tells Eyegor and Igor how pleased he is to see that they have changed the goody-goods in the forest so that they are no longer a threat to their wickedness, and so he gives the two students a passing grade. He then steps up onto the table to address the graduating class to tell them how pleased he is that they have succeeded in turning the entire forest into monsters and tells them that on the following day they will spreading fear into all four corners of the globe, a thought which makes the professor all teary-eyed. One of the two students asks if they could take the little blue creatures with them. The professor says why not, adding "the more the merrier... I mean, scarier," as he sits down to a pipe organ and plays music that makes the monster Smurfs and his students dance.
Papa Smurf, Painter, and Greedy look in at the happy scene from one of the windows of the castle, with Greedy saying that they've got to save the Smurfs quickly. Papa Smurf tells Greedy not to be hasty, because he needs to figure out how to turn the Smurfs back to normal, and to do that he will need something that monsters really hate. Greedy decided to pull out one of his garlic cookies to eat in order to help bring some inspiration to a solution, and soon enough its scent makes Papa Smurf remember that garlic is what he needs. As for how they're going to get close enough to use the garlic, Papa Smurf comes up with an idea for that.
By disguising themselves as monsters, the three Smurfs enter the grand hall of the castle unnoticed and approach the refreshment table to dump the garlic into the punch so that the monster Smurfs will drink of it and be changed to normal. As they head over to the table, though, three of the monster students get into a fight over a punch that causes one student to toss a bowl of punch onto the floor, splashing the three Smurfs and washing off the makeup they were wearing. Soon the monster Smurfs and students see the three normal Smurfs and give chase after them while the professor continues to play music from his organ. Greedy splits up from Papa Smurf and Painter and climbs up to the top of the pipe organ to dump the garlic into the pipes so that its odor reaches out into the entire grand hall. The garlic fumes make the monster students choke while it turns the monster Smurfs who breathe in the fumes back into regular Smurfs. They quickly flee out of the castle and toward safety while Professor Von Monster Meister deals with Eyegor and Igor who have now failed his class.
Back at the camp, Greedy makes up another batch of garlic cookies that taste much better than the previous batch because he now had sweetened the batch with flower nectar. Greedy finishes off the cookies on his tray and says that he hates leaving such a place like where they were, but then Grandpa Smurf sees that the professor and his class of monster students are quickly approaching their camp site and tells Papa Smurf that now is a good time as any to put the last time crystal in place. Soon, with the last crystal set in formation, the time whirlwind appears and takes the Smurfs safely out of the haunted forest.
Trivia[]
- This is the first time the Smurfs wear lederhosen (not to mention Smurfette wearing a dirndl), which are traditional European clothing from Bavaria.
- However, Transylvania (the location the Smurfs are in this episode) is a region in Romania. In fact, when the episode was included on Amazon Prime TV, the summary said that the Smurfs were in Germany, making a bit of a misconception. But this could've been because the Smurfs wore the traditional Bavarian outfits.
- The next time the Smurfs wear lederhosen is in "Wild Goes Cuckoo", where the Smurfs are in Switzerland.
- This is the only Season 9 episode in which Brainy does not appear.
- Papa Smurf, Painter, and Greedy are the only Smurfs to not eat the gingerbread house nor turn into monsters.
Goofs[]
- When the Smurfs first arrive in Germany, Papa Smurf's hat is white.
- A very noticeable plot error is visible in this episode; despite not going with the other Smurfs to the gingerbread house, Papa Smurf can briefly be seen eating the house with the other Smurfs. He disappears for the rest of the scene and does not become a monster.
