Synopsis[]

Shutterbug Smurfs

Handy invents a camera which makes Painter jealous that pictures can be made so quickly. Later, some pictures of the village fall from Grandpa Smurf's magic balloon and Gargamel gets them.

Plot Summary[]

It's Carnival Day in the forest, where the Smurfs play games and buy tickets to go on rides. Arriving at the carnival are Nat, Snappy, and Slouchy, the latter saying that this is the best fair ever. Nat agrees on this statement as they see Grandpa Smurf, who is giving free rides on his magic balloon. Grandpa lands his balloon to tell the Smurflings to get on, saying that he's ready for his final liftoff. However, the Smurflings tell him to wait for his countdown, as they had promised they wouldn't go without Sassette.

The Smurflings walk to Handy, who demonstrates his latest invention, the idea booth. However, the fan ends up popping their balloon. When Handy tries to find other things that they can play with, Slouchy says they want something to make Painter paint faster. The Smurflings then walk away to find Sassette, who is getting her picture painted by him, though as they leave, Handy gets an idea.

Meanwhile, business is moving slow for Painter, who is busy with Sassette and has several Smurfs also waiting to get their picture painted. The impatient Smurfs begin to argue with Painter, who simply says art takes time. Sassette is additionally tired of sitting as she's going to miss her balloon ride and the other Smurfs are beginning to close up the fair. Handy shows up just in time to introduce his new picture maker, which takes pictures of Smurfs who don't want to wait for their painting. Handy shows how it works by taking a picture of Vanity, who is amazed at this new contraption, and so are the other Smurfs, who pile on Handy and his camera.

Just then, Gargamel arrives out of the bushes, ready to catch some Smurfs. He captures Sassette while Azrael runs after Brainy. Brainy runs into Hefty, who hits a rock at the strength tester and hits Azrael with it. Grandpa runs away from Scruple as the old Smurf tips over a fruit stand, causing Scruple to fall on a squash. He and Azrael then crash into Gargamel, who drops the net with Sassette in it. As the Smurfs run back to the village, Brainy blames Painter for the mess, but Painter says the art takes time.

Later, Hefty admires his picture frame, saying he's never looked stronger, while Brainy says he's never looked smarter. Painter tries to criticize it, but is attacked by Hefty and Brainy, who say that he's jealous. Painter is outraged and claims he's going to the forest, where nature appreciates true art. Handy then pops up to take another picture of Hefty, who drops his barbells and screams in pain.

Meanwhile, Vanity is using a mud mask, saying it's good for his skin but it makes him look terrible. This doesn't matter to Handy, who takes his picture. The same goes for Grouchy, and Papa Smurf, who's experiment he was making with Grandpa explodes when they see a flash. Suddenly, they are met with complaints from Brainy, Vanity, and Hefty, who want Papa Smurf to tell Handy to stop taking embarrassing pictures of them. This offends Handy, who decides to go into the forest.

Out in the forest, Painter is painting life, but a deer runs by, smashing his canvas. When Handy tries to see if Painter is alright, Painter blames Handy for his failures of painting and when he offers him a picture, Painter angrily declines and walks off, making Handy believes artists are the worst critics.

Elsewhere, Gargamel, Scruple, and Azrael continue searching for Smurfs, but Scruple doubts they will find any more, leaving Gargamel to say he needs the "right flash of inspiration", which conveniently happens when Handy takes a picture of a ladybug. This captures Gargamel's attention as he chases Handy away.

Up in the air, Grandpa is with the Smurflings in the magic balloon. Just then, Nat and Slouchy notice Gargamel chasing Handy, which Grandpa also sees and lands the balloon. Grandpa throws a hook down, which Handy grabs, leading him on the balloon. While on the balloon, Handy sees the beautiful views and decides to take various pictures. Unfortunately, not to anyone's knowledge, the pictures fall off the balloon. When Handy, Grandpa, and the Smurflings return, Handy notices the missing pictures.

Meanwhile, Painter walks back to the village, but he finds Handy's pictures. He begins to change his mind on the pictures, only to be interrupted by Gargamel, who he runs away from, leaving the pictures behind. As Gargamel falls, he sees the pictures and now knows the "map" to Smurf Village.

Back at the village, Handy worries about the missing pictures, but Painter says he was only trying to make his pictures faster. The two Smurfs then rush to tell the others.

The Smurfs have gathered around to hear the news about Gargamel potentially arriving at the village. Papa Smurf says they must camouflage the village before the arrival of Gargamel. Painter gets an idea to paint something that doesn't look like the village, which Handy agrees to.

Out in the forest, the evil trio try to find the village, with Gargamel unsuccessfully leading. Painter reveals that he painted the pictures so it looks like Gargamel is going to the village, but he isn't. The plan is put into action when Handy snaps a photo, causing the trio to lose their eyesight for a couple of seconds, giving Handy time to swap the pictures.

Gargamel, Azrael, and Scruple continue going the wrong way, with the final picture leading to "the village" under the bushes. When the three make their big entrance, they end up falling down a cliff. Handy takes a final picture, in which they didn't even smile.

Later, the Smurflings ask Papa Smurf if they can still dress up, but Papa Smurf says they have nothing to dress up for. Handy claims that his picture taking days are over, not because they were bad pictures, but because he'll never get it back from Vanity, who continues to fawn over this amazing invention.
