The player controls a Smurf who must travel through the terrain of the Smurf forest in order to rescue Smurfette, who is held captive in Gargamel's castle. Along the way, Smurf must jump over fences, rivers, ledges, chairs, and tables that block his path, while avoiding birds, snakes, spiders, and bats. An energy meter at the top of the screen ticks away as Smurf tries to complete every region of the forest; a bonus of remaining energy in the meter is added to the player's score if Smurf completes the region, while Smurf dies if he fails to complete the region before the energy meter runs out. When Smurf rescues Smurfette, he is placed back at the start where the level gets longer and the animals get faster and harder to avoid.
Besides this game, a Smurf "play and learn" educational game for the ColecoVision was advertised in their promotional literature, but was never worked on or released, as was also the case for the Intellivision version and the ColecoVision Super Game Module version of this game. A different type of educational game, The Smurfs Save The Day, was released for the Atari 2600 instead while Smurf Paint & Play Workshop was released for the ColecoVision.
The game did see some ports to the Commodore 64: Smurf Rescue by Courbois Software in 1984, which was followed in 1985 by Smurf 2: The Revenge, and Smurfen by C.A.W. and M. Brand, which was notable for using Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" as part of its background music.
The catchy tune played throughout the game is actually from two separate sources -- religious folk music (Shakers) and classical music. The folk music featured is Joseph Brackett Jr.'s 1848 song, Simple Gifts and the classical music is Ludwig Van Beethoven's 1808 Symphony Number 6, Pastoral.
A fan-created Flash game sequel called Day Of The Purple Smurfs is currently available. Translated from the website:
"It was a quiet day in the Smurf Village. An ideal location for walking in the woods and listening to the birds singing all day. But all that changed when a cloud of purple flies invaded the forest. Now you have only five lives to escape the place alive, evading the Purple Smurfs who love you bite you in the tail, and avoiding natural dangers of the forest. Will you be able to defeat Gargamel, rescue Smurfette, and save the Smurf Village? We'll see! Day of the Purple Smurfs is a game tribute to Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle, the classic game of the ColecoVision. What do you expect to play?"
Sydney Hunter And The Shrines Of Peril
CollectorVision was developing an official adaptation of Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle for the Intellivision, but due to legal reasons, the game was eventually converted into Sydney Hunter And The Shrines Of Peril. The game is also available on Android from Google Play.
