"Smurf Pet" is a Season 7 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

The Smurflings sneak a pet Nebbit into the village. When they try to return the Nebbit to his land, Scruple captures it for his science project.

Plot Summary[]

Grandpa Smurf, Brainy, and the Smurflings have landed in a part of the world inhabited by strange purple creatures with long noses that bounce around on their tails. Grandpa says that this is the land of Nebbit, which is where the Nebbits live and also where the mineral water that makes the nebbitgonias grow is found, which Grandpa takes a sample of for Farmer's crops. One of the Nebbits proves to be so friendly around the Smurflings that they end up asking Grandpa if they could keep him as their pet. Brainy objects to this, saying that doing so would upset the perfect balance of nature, even as the Nebbit bouncing around Brainy causes him to lose his "perfect balance" on top of the rock he was standing on. Grandpa agrees to what Brainy is saying, telling the young Smurflings that Nebbits belong in the land of Nebbit. As they gather up the picnic basket, they brought along for the trip in preparation to return to the Smurf Village, the Smurflings notice that the friendly Nebbit has stowed away inside the basket and decide to sneak him back to the village without anybody noticing.

Sassette and the nebit

Grandpa gets the balloon going after retrieving the magic goggles he uses with the balloon from Brainy after his failed attempt to get the balloon going himself, and then recites the magic words to make the balloon fly to the Smurf Village. Suddenly, a purple mist surrounds the balloon, and its passengers fall asleep as the balloon goes into autopilot mode, transporting its passengers to the Smurf Village in a matter of minutes. They awaken to find that they've returned home, but Grandpa also finds that the balloon is sinking faster than he expected it to, causing a rough landing that dumps Brainy out of the gondola. The Smurflings quickly rush off with the picnic basket they're carrying while Grandpa checks the balloon, telling Handy that it may be due for its 100-journey checkup.

Meanwhile, Smurfette sees that Baby Smurf has a bunch of nebbitgonias in his hand and decides that she's going to plant them. Brainy gives Farmer the mineral water that was collected, telling the crop tender that he had to risk life and limb to get it while dealing with the ferocious Nebbits. Inside the Smurflings' playhouse, the Smurflings find that they're out of the favorite plants that the Nebbit eats, and as they watch the Nebbit start eating away at one of their pillows, they realize that their friendly pet is hungry and needs food. Farmer sees Smurfette planting the nebbitgonias into the ground and offers to use the mineral water to help it grow, which makes Smurfette so thankful that she gives him a kiss. After they both walk off, though, neither of them sees that the flowers continue their growth spurt.

Out in the forest, Scruple is tending to a small garden of snapdragons by feeding them moss mulch, saying that he wants them big and strong for the Wizard's Science Fair, and that when he wins first prize, he'll be back in school and away from Gargamel. Azrael shares Scruple's sentiments, though he gets his tail bitten by one of the snapdragons. Scruple sees that they must still be hungry, so he goes off to get more moss mulch.

Back in the village, Greedy has a pie tin of smurfberry cobbler sitting on the windowsill cooling off, saying that he can't wait until tonight's dessert to eat it. As he goes off to find something in the kitchen to eat the cobbler with, the Nebbit sees the pie on the windowsill and decides to help himself to it, eating the whole thing in one gulp. The Smurflings find Nebbit outside Greedy's kitchen, but then the creature runs off and leaves the Smurflings facing Greedy coming back to find that his cobbler is gone and blaming the Smurflings for eating it. Snappy says that they were so hungry that they just couldn't resist, which makes Greedy tell them he can't resist telling Papa Smurf.

Painter is busy painting a still-life of a bowl of fruit, saying that it looks so real that he could almost taste it. He notices that he is out of a certain color of paint and so goes into his house to get more, leaving the still-life objects and his painting unwatched. The Nebbit comes along and eats the fruit in the bowl as well as the fruit in the painting, then runs off as the Smurflings try to catch up to him only to see Painter return to see that his still-life objects and part of his painting are gone, blaming the Smurflings for what has happened and saying that Papa Smurf will hear about it.

Suddenly, Brainy comes running out of his house, saying that someone has stolen one of his books. He soon sees who the culprit is, as the Smurflings also catch up to it... The Nebbit which the Smurflings brought back with them just because they wanted a pet. Brainy scolds the Smurflings, saying that the creature is too unpredictable to be a pet, a thought which is underscored by the fact that the Nebbit just took a bite out of Brainy's hat. Snappy says that he hopes Grandpa doesn't get too upset when he has to take the Nebbit back in his magic balloon, but then Brainy has an idea: instead of waking up Grandpa, he decides that he's going to take control of the magic balloon and help the Smurflings return the Nebbit back to the land where the creature belongs.

Then, Papa Smurf comes along with Greedy and Painter, and Brainy quickly hides the Nebbit inside his house while the Smurflings confront the three adult Smurfs who accuse the youngsters of both eating Greedy's pie and cannibalizing Painter's still-life. Papa Smurf asks the Smurflings what's the meaning of all this, and as the Smurflings try to answer, Brainy comes to their defense by simply saying the Smurflings were just hungry. Papa Smurf reprimands the Smurflings by telling them that they should ask first before eating things that don't belong to them. After apologies were made to Painter and Greedy before they walk off with Papa Smurf, the Smurflings wonder why Brainy would bother to defend them, and Brainy tells them that he wants to help them solve their unwanted pet problem by taking the Nebbit back to his home in Grandpa's magic balloon. Snappy tells Brainy that he doesn't know the first thing about flying the balloon, but Brainy assures the youngsters that he knows what he's doing, and so the five Smurfs and the Nebbit huddle together while Brainy whispers out his plan.

Out in the forest, Scruple is standing on a rock in the middle of a pond, collecting as much mulch as possible for his snapdragons as Azrael holds his nose at the smell of the mulch, when they are soon joined by three students from the Wizard's School, each of them gathering their own things and saying that they're going to win the Science Fair. Scruple interrupts their boasting by telling them he's going to win and be welcomed back to Wizard's School with open arms, but suddenly, the "rock" Scruple is standing on starts to move, revealing itself to be the shell of a giant turtle, and dumps the young cocky student into the water. The three other students laugh at him, saying that the only award he's going to win is the Washed-Up Wizard's Hopeless Helper Award. Scruple growls at the sneering laughter, saying he'll show up those stuck-up students if that's the last thing he does.

By nighttime, Brainy and the Smurflings sneak aboard the anchored flying balloon, with the Smurflings being rather reluctant to take the magic balloon without asking Grandpa. Brainy reminds them that they have stolen the Nebbit from his habitation, which makes them decide that it's worth the risk of going along with Brainy's idea. Brainy pulls the anchor, and the Smurflings and the Nebbit climb on board the gondola as the balloon starts to sail off. Brainy puts on the magic goggles and tries to recite the magic words to get the balloon to take them to the land of Nebbit, but the Smurflings see that Brainy truly doesn't know the magic words as the balloon keeps sailing over the treetops without any control and keeps brushing against the trees. It is at this point that Brainy and the Smurflings cry for help.

Meanwhile, Scruple has grown the snapdragons to a great size as he continues to feed them mulch. Azrael laughs as the young apprentice gets a spray of mulch right back at him, only to get a bucket of leftover mulch dumped on top of him by Scruple. He tells the cat to watch over his garden while he goes to get water. After Scruple departs, Grandpa's magic balloon lands, and Brainy says that they have finally landed in the land of Nebbit, but after seeing the kind of plants that are growing, Nat says that it doesn't look like the land of Nebbit. Brainy tries to explain that it must be a different part of Nebbit as he sees the Nebbit eating away at the vegetation that's nearby. But soon even that idea goes out the window as they find themselves being chased after by Azrael while Slouchy gets rescued by the Nebbit after being picked up and flung into the air by one of the snapdragons. Scruple returns to find that the Nebbit is now eating one of his snapdragons, and so captures the creature with his bucket, telling Azrael to forget about the snapdragons because he's found a more worthy creature to present to the school's headmaster Mordor at the Science Fair. The Smurflings decide that they're going to save the Nebbit, and so after dealing with Brainy's objections the four youngsters chase off after Scruple, leaving Brainy behind with the magic balloon to pout.

The next morning, Smurfette wakes up to find the sunlight being blocked, and as she opens up a window to see why, she finds that the nebbitgonias she has planted aren't so little anymore. In fact, the plants are growing around her house, blocking her off from ever leaving. The other Smurfs wake up to see that the nebbitgonias are also growing around the village, getting increasingly bigger and spreading as they continue to grow. Handy shows up at Smurfette's door with his Clipomatic plant clipper and cuts through the plants blocking Smurfette's door, but all too soon the blades of the clipper get dented as the plants grow back as fast as they are cut. Grandpa explains what the plants are and that they're supposed to grow big so that the Nebbits could eat them. He tells the younger Smurfs that he's going to have go back to the land of the Nebbits to get a Nebbit so that they could get rid of the overgrowing plants. Clumsy goes to get the Smurflings, but returns to tell the Smurfs that he can't find them or Brainy anywhere just as Grandpa discovers that his magic balloon is gone. Grandpa realizes that Brainy must have taken the balloon and could have gone anywhere with it, only for Handy to tell them that he and the Smurflings couldn't have gone far without the balloon's gyrostabilizer. Papa Smurf says that they must find them before the nebbitgonias destroy the village.

At the Wizard's School, the science fair is underway as the three students seen earlier present their completed projects, hoping that theirs alone will win first place. Scruple then shows up and says he's got first place in the bag as he dumps his bag on the table and tells his scoffers that they'll find out what's inside at the same time that they lose the competition. Then the headmaster shows up and says that the judging will now begin, and while that happens, the Smurflings see that if Scruple shows the Nebbit to the headmaster and wins, they may never get him back. Sassette says that she wishes they had the magic balloon to help get the Nebbit back, but then Snappy says he has a plan.

Out in the forest, Papa Smurf and Grandpa catch up with Brainy as he fixes up the balloon and tries to get it going again, with Papa Smurf demanding to know what Brainy is doing with the balloon. Brainy tries to tell them that he just brought it out into the forest to get it fixed, but soon tells them that the Smurflings made him use the magic balloon to bring the Nebbit they stole back home. Grandpa is surprised to hear that the Smurflings brought home a Nebbit, but to Brainy's surprise, instead of getting angry, the elderly Smurf says that the Nebbit might be the only way that they can save the village. Brainy says that Scruple now has the Nebbit, which makes the two elder Smurfs recoil in surprise as they realize what a human like him could possibly do with a creature like a Nebbit. While the village continues to deal with the nebbitgonia plants growing everywhere, Handy tries to fix the magic balloon as quickly as he can, but he tells Papa Smurf that the lines are a mess.

At the Wizard's School, the headmaster Mordor tells Scruple that he's given the young student one last chance to prove himself at the Science Fair, and while Scruple prepares to impress the teacher, the Smurflings sneak up behind while nobody was looking and release the Nebbit from inside the bag. Scruple then opens the bag to present his prize catch to the headmaster, but all either of them can see is nothing inside, which only confirms what the headmaster thought Scruple had all along. As the other three students gather around to mock Scruple's failure, Scruple sees the Smurflings run off with the Nebbit and chase after them, leaving the other students laughing at him. The Smurflings and the Nebbit head inside the school and run up to the top of one of the towers, only to find that there's no escape for them as Scruple and Azrael have them trapped. Suddenly Papa Smurf and Grandpa show up in the magic balloon, and the Smurflings quickly hop on board. The Nebbit tries to follow, but he is soon grabbed by Scruple, and it soon becomes a tug-of-war as Grandpa tries to give the balloon more power to pull the purple creature out of Scruple's grasp, with Azrael trying to give Scruple more pulling power on his end by wrapping his tail around the tower bell's dongle. Soon, Scruple loses his grip and is left banging on the bell with Azrael while Grandpa flies off with the Nebbit, and Mordor and the three students watch and laugh at Scruple's failed attempt to prove himself once again.

After the Smurfs return to the village, the Nebbit goes to work feeding on the nebbitgonias until every single plant is gone for good. The Smurflings say goodbye to their pet before Grandpa takes the little creature home, hoping that the Smurflings have learned their lesson to never take wild creatures like the Nebbit out of their habitats. Brainy tries to stop Grandpa before he takes off, saying that he should come along because no one has spent more time in the air other than him, which only gets proven when Brainy is given another all-expense-paid flight out of the village to land on his head.
