Smurf Stories

"Smurf Stories" (original French name Histoires des Schtroumpfs) is a book of single-page Smurf gags that was created and published by Peyo, mostly appearing in French. It is the predecessor of a series of similar books called Schtroumpferies.

Handy has just made a machine that changes walnuts into gold and shows it to Papa Smurf. When Papa asks what he'll do with all that gold, Handy replies that he'll buy himself a lot of walnuts.

Jokey is running around a hole and saying "27... 27...". A curious Smurf looks into the hole with Jokey pushing him into it and now he changes to "28... 28...".
Grouchy walks through the village, hating everything as usual. When he's asked if he likes anything, he goes into the forest where he picks and says that he like flowers but hates that anyone knows about it.
Papa finds Lazy sleeping on work and sends him back to work, saying that every Smurf is cut out for working. Later, Lazy hits a tree with his axe with an apple falling on his head. He is injured and lies in his bed while Papa says that he really isn't cut out for working.
The Smurfs bake a big cake, and everybody wants to taste it, but Papa says they'll do it tomorrow. A Smurf pretends to sleepwalk to the cake, finding Papa waiting for him and every other Smurf except for Brainy and Lazy already there.
Two Smurfs carry a heavy package from Handy. At home, they find a wheelbarrow inside a package.
A Smurf tells a Smurf with wheelbarrow that his legs hurt, so he takes a ride into the village. Another Smurf sees that and tells the same to a Smurf riding a barrel. He happily jumps into the barrel, which is unfortunately full of tar.
Harmony wants to play his horn on a hot day, but every Smurf sends him away. Then one Smurf wants him to play to him, but he has earmuffs and uses Harmony's blowing for a fresh air.
A Smurf wants to use a ladder to paint his house, while his neighbor has the same idea. They argue but find a solution, using the ladder between both houses as a lever.
Two Smurfs use a stick that can show the location of a treasure or a water source. They find a water source, which turns out to be Papa's supply of sarsaparilla brandy.
The Smurfs try to stop Harmony's awful playing giving him various instruments. When nothing works, they ask Handy for a musical box, but even that sounds horrible in Harmony's hands.
Two Smurfs plant a tree and wait several months to see it growing up. They finally give up, not noticing that the tree has grown up right behind them.
A Smurf tells Handy that his chimney does not pull in. Handy then improves it so good, that it pulls in everything in the Smurf's house, including him.
Poet can't find a rhyme for his new poem. Suddenly, he falls, finding the sound the fall made perfect for his poem.
A Smurf is sawing a branch when Brainy warns him he can't sit further from the tree than he's sawing. Smurf listens to his advice, while Brainy, still talking endlessly, remains where that Smurf was before.
Poet goes into the forest to write a poem about autumn. Suddenly, a pear falls onto him, and he aggressively writes a verse about falling fruit.
A Smurf wants to take a photo of all the Smurfs. He spends a lot of time to find a perfect pose for a picture and he goes to take the photo when he realizes that he forgot a film.
A Smurf is making soap bubbles and Dopey wants to make them too. But instead of blowing the soap, he is pulling it in, surprised that he didn't make any.
Every Smurf is making soap bubbles his own way. Then, Sneezy tells Papa that he has problems making bubbles and instead he is making just ice blocks.
Harmony plays his horn again, so the Smurfs tell him Papa needs him and put soap into his horn while he's gone. When he returns, he makes bubbles instead of music, but when the bubbles pop, the sound of Harmony's music comes from them.
It's winter and Sneezy tells a Smurf that he's freezing. A Smurf replies that if he convinces himself it is really hot, he'll feel hot too. Sneezy tries it and faints and Papa tells he's got sunstroke.
A Smurf tries to hammer a nail for his picture. He hits so hard that he breaks the wall, so he puts a frame around the crack, saying that he created a new painting technique.
Papa orders Dopey to bring him some firewood and Dopey brings only one branch. He is sent back and after a while he comes with a lot of logs. Papa wonders where he got them and Dopey shows him - he took them from the village dam!
As the Christmas approaches, every Smurf is given by a present - Greedy gets a cake, Harmony a bell, Hefty a dumbbell, Poet a rhyme dictionary, Farmer a shovel, Jokey an explosive when Sneezy finds burned Santa's pants while he still has his fire burning.
For a New Year vows, Brainy tries to tell all the Smurfs what they should do less in this year. Hefty resists and he, supported by the other Smurfs, now force Brainy into writing a long list of his vows.
It's King Day and the Smurfs plan to bake a big cake and put a bean into it - who finds a bean, can be a king for one day. Greedy then comes to Papa and tells Jokey sent him while he just wanted to bake the cake. Then Farmer shows up, saying that a bag of beans is missing - Papa now quickly runs to the cake, where every Smurf's got a lot of beans and Jokey is laughing behind the house.
A Smurf has found a starving and freezing bird in the forest and brings it to the village. Papa suggests that the Smurfs go looking for the other poor birds. Soon, Greedy returns, telling Papa that he needs a lot of food for his bird, which is actually a turkey.
Jokey uses a joke box on various Smurfs. Later, no one else wants to open his present and Jokey is disappointed and decides to open the box himself, saying what a nice present it was.
A Smurf tells his friend about a wishing well that no one uses. His friend Smurf is excited and goes to the well, but returns without wishing anything, saying that his life is already perfect.
A Smurf returns Papa a ladder he borrowed, but the ladder is dirty, so Papa wants him to clean it. The next morning, a Smurf brings a ladder he was cleaning the whole night back but says that it shrunk while cleaning.
Handy is sharpening his knife and then a lot of Smurfs come wanting him to sharpen their things too. Then, one Smurf asks for sharpening his hammer, which surprises Handy, but the Smurf says it matters only that the sound of sharpening is louder than Harmony's playing.
Sneezy is in bad mood because it rains again, so he decides to leave the village. Papa goes to talk to him, and one hour later, they both come from Sneezy's house prepared to a journey.
Two Smurfs bet if Dopey would fall for a joke to fill the strainer with water. He falls and goes to river where he tries to do as he was told to but is surprised when water flows through and thinks of a solution. The two Smurfs go after him and find him saying that he did it. Surprised Smurfs go to river where Dopey shows them a strainer he left in river!
A Smurf is teaching carnivorous plant manners when another Smurf comes and laughs to him and the flower. The flower now bites that Smurf and its owner is angry as he was trying to teach the plant not to do that.
Astro Smurf is hitting his head numerous ways. Papa asks what he's doing to which he replies that he's learning about the stars.
A Smurf borrows Papa's ladder to build a tower and Papa wants it to be returned clean. The Smurf builds a tower but forgets the ladder inside it and can't get it out, much to Papa's anger. To get it out, the Smurf saws the ladder on more parts and returns it clean, just as Papa wanted.
The picnic basket explodes due to Jokey. Annoyed Smurfs ask him what they will eat now and see only one solution, the Jokey barbecue - and Jokey can't get that joke when he's put on fire.
A Smurf is having tea with Smurfette at his home. Smurfette decides to leave, but the Smurf opens the window and shows her that it's raining outside. After another cup of tea, it's still raining and Smurfette is forced to stay. Soon after, a Smurf knocks saying it's his turn to drink tea with Smurfette now, and it is shown that they're making rain with water pump to have Smurfette stay.
The two Smurfs are trying if their telesmurf works, so one goes all across the village with his receiver so they're as far as possible during the call. The telesmurf seems to work, but unbeknown to them, they're standing next to each other, one in the house and the other outside of it.
Painter sees a Smurf in bad mood with dark thoughts. He uses his painting tools to erase his thoughts and to draw flowers to replace them, making the Smurf happy.
A Smurf lies on the sun at the riverside all day. In the evening, as he returns home, he is angry as he finds he hasn't tanned a little during the day.
Sculptor is working on a sculpture of another Smurf. A bee flies by, and the posing Smurf tries to repel it, changing his pose numerous times. As the work is done, his sculpture is a mixture of many poses he had trying waving away the bee.
Greedy is struggling to think of an activity he would present at a talent show that day. Luckily, a Smurf decides to help him and prepares a spicy soup for him to drink at the time of his performance. As Greedy drinks the soup while on stage, he breathes fire, and is presented as Greedy, the fire-breathing Smurf.
A Smurf is walking through the village in the night and is scared by a monster. He believes the monster is Jokey and tries to get rid of him, but it continues to follow him. As the monster finally leaves, the Smurf is shocked as he discovers it couldn't have been Jokey as he himself is Jokey!
A Smurf is sadly sitting next to his mirror, thinking he's got a big nose. Another Smurf fails to cheer him up, so that Smurf decides to look at his own nose to prove him he's wrong. Later, the third Smurf, finds them both in bad mood as they both believe their nose is too big.
The Smurfs are in the forest and find a cuckoo's nest. They quickly start working on something around it, which later turns out to be a cuckoo clock.
A Smurf is convinced that he always has bad luck as he thinks of some recent events, but just then he finds a four-leaf clover. Excited, he tells that to a nearby Smurf, who turns out to have found a five-leaf clover. The Smurf sadly leaves with conclusion that he always has bad luck.
Two Smurfs are looking at the clouds that are in shape of Papa Smurf, a cake, a sheep and even a smurfulonimbus with the top shaped like an anvil. Then a cloud comes that they can't find a thing it resembles, as it turns out to be in the shape of Europe.
The Smurfs are coming out of Papa's lab, but everyone looks like a freak. Inside, Papa is struggling to find the right formula for the elixir of youth.
Alchemist Smurf points out that Papa has a lot of bottles, so he takes one and wonders what's in it. Papa prevents him from opening it, saying there's a ghost inside it. As Alchemist leaves, Papa takes a sip from the bottle, full of sarsaparilla brandy.
The Smurfs are looking at the horizon and asks Painter to paint a sunset on it, and the artist does so, and all the Smurfs are impressed.

Trivia[]

This is the only Peyo-era Smurfs comic book to date that has never been translated into the English language. However, it was eventually available in The Smurfs Anthology #4 in English.
This book features all the Smurfs that were introduced prior to its release and also marks the first appearance of Sculptor in Smurfs media.
