"Smurfs" is an upcoming computer-animated musical film based on The Smurfs, being directed by Chris Miller and based on a story by Pam Brady.[2] It is the first Smurfs film adaptation to be produced without the involvement of Columbia Pictures or Sony Pictures Animation. The film is being produced by Ryan Harris, Jay Brown, Rihanna, and Tyran "Ty-Ty" Smith, with Rihanna starring as Smurfette.
The movie is scheduled to be released theatrically on July 18, 2025 by Paramount Pictures.[3] The film was originally scheduled for release on February 14, 2025.
Premise
The comedic musical will the Smurfs go on an interdimensional adventure to discover the power within and answer the universal question: What is a Smurf?[4][5]
History
In February 2022, multiple feature films based on the Smurfs, as well as another season of the original television series, were put into development. The first project under the new creative partnership with LAFIG Belgium and IMPS, the company that owns the Smurfs brand, will be an animated musical film, which is slated to begin production this year and set to release in theaters on December 20, 2024. Pam Brady, a “South Park” alum, has come on board to write the upcoming movie. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation produce the film.[2] In August 2022, Paramount Pictures pushed back the date for its Untitled Smurfs Animated Musical.[3] In April 2023, at Paramount Pictures‘ CinemaCon presentation, it was announced that Rihanna wound be lending her voice to Smurfette in Nickelodeon Movies’ The Smurfs Movie. Rihanna also is producing the movie and providing original songs.
The Chris Miller-directed movie comes out on July 18, 2025. Co-director is Matt Landon. Pam Brady wrote the script inspired by characters and works of Peyo. Producers also include Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith.[4]
Casting
In April 2024, Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell and John Goodman joined Rihanna in the cast.[6]
Release
The Smurfs Movie will be released on July 18, 2025 by Paramount Pictures.[3][4] Originally scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, also a Paramount film, took the latter release date, pushing it forward to a release date of February 14, 2025.[2] It was eventually shelved from this release date as well, pushing it to its new date as of now.
