I'm Smurfwillow, leader of the Smurfs.

- Smurfwillow

Smurfwillow (original French name Saule) is one of the main characters of the 2021 TV series and the comic books, usually in the Girls' Village Collection. She made her debut in Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Character[]

The girls' leader and the female equivalent to Papa Smurf. She's the matriarch, someone the girls trust and look up to. And for good reason. She's wise, strong, brave, and funny - even a little quirky, with a breadth of knowledge that's astounding. She knows the secrets of nature and the properties of every kind of plant. She can communicate with them, and even instruct them how to grow! Unlike Papa Smurf, Willow is more like a shaman than an alchemist. But Willow isn't all business. She has a lighter side, too - teasing Papa Smurf about all the troubles his Smurfs cause or watching shows on her crystal ball with a bag of vegetable chips at her side. Without a doubt, her favorite pastime is playing dominoes. And nobody dares challenge her - she's just too good.

Role in the Village[]

Just like Papa Smurf, Smurfwillow is the leader of her village and mother figure of 100 female Smurfs.

Appearance[]

Unlike her little Smurf Girls, who have dark blue hair, Willow has white hair which she wears in two pigtails and straight bangs. She wears a sand-colored dress with a brown vest, a bracelet with purple and pink colored small stones on her right wrist, and red pants and hat with a daisy on the right side of her hat.

In the 2021 cartoon, Smurfwillow's design remains the same, except that she wears a dress in a darker shade of yellow, a bracelet with different colors, and a pink flower instead of a white one on her hat.

Personality[]

Smurfwillow is a wise and formidable leader, but also kind and quick to assume the best rather than the worst about an individual or group. She is calm and often trying to make peace between everyone, such as attempting to resolve the conflict between Blossom and Storm and Lily in "Blossom Goes Wild!" and stopping Hefty from beating up Jokey in "A Smurfy Christmas".

Willow is wise, strong, brave, and funny. She knows the secrets of nature and the properties of every kind of plant. She can even communicate with them! Unlike Papa Smurf (who's favorite magic is alchemy), Willow's favorite type of magic is natural magic, revealed in "Smurfy Magic Duel".

Willow is also very intimidating. In "The Betrayal Of Smurfblossom" when Brainy starts lecturing her about how "Papa Smurf always says...", she snaps back that Papa Smurf isn't here and that he answers to her authority right now.

She has a lighter side too and she loves to tease Papa Smurf. The two often try to outsmart each other, such as bragging about who has bigger flowers in "Smurfy Mother's Day!" and challenging each other to a magic duel in "Smurfy Magic Duel". This in turn brings out Willow's competitive side, as shown in "The Sarsaparillo Run", where she is seen competing against Papa Smurf, Leaf, Gargamel, and Mummy for the Sarsaparillo, a plant that only grows every 100 years.

Willow has a good connection to animal life, most notably birds. In "Papa Smurf Leaves The Nest", she uses her magic to communicate with Papa Smurf, who had swapped bodies with a bird, and gets that information when she uses a potion that allows her to talk to birds.

Willow has been said to be "very protective" of her girls as stated by Hefty in "Smurfs In Disguise", though it is unknown if this is true or if this is Hefty's lie, as he was disguising himself as a girl with Scaredy in that episode, though it is later said again by Blossom in "Relaxosmurf".

History[]

Uh oh! Very Smurfy Non-canon warning: This article or section contains non-canonical information that is not considered to be an official part of the Smurfs Franco-Belgian comic book series, the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show series, or the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show series, and should not be considered part of the overall storyline of any of those media universes.

Smurfs: The Lost Village[]

Nothing is known about her history prior to the Smurfs first meeting her and her little Smurf Girls in the movie, except that she was self-taught in the art of self-defense. Upon meeting the first four Smurfs from the Smurf Village, she allowed them to be granted hospitality by her little Smurf Girls, although Smurfstorm still had suspicions about Smurfette. She later meets her Smurf Village counterpart Papa Smurf when he comes to look for the four Smurfs that left his village and the two elderly leaders show signs of having feelings for each other, although that meeting was soon ruined by the appearance of Gargamel attacking and freezing all but Smurfette with his Freeze Balls. While they were captives inside Gargamel's castle, Smurfwillow and Papa Smurf attempt an escape with the other captured Smurfs and Smurf Girls, which was eventually foiled by Gargamel sending his pets Azrael and Monty to stop them. However, when Smurfette bravely sacrificed herself to stop Gargamel from using his equipment to siphon the Smurf essence out of her fellow Smurfs and Smurf Girls, reverting back to a lifeless lump of blue clay in the process, Smurfwillow joined with Papa Smurf in their return to the Smurf Village to mourn for their loss. Fortunately, the love that the Smurfs and Smurf Girls showed for Smurfette became powerful enough to re-animate the remains and turn Smurfette back into a real Smurf again. As the Smurfs and Smurf Girls celebrate Smurfette returning to life again and the meeting of the two villages, Smurfwillow is seen having an outing with Papa Smurf in the end credits.

Relationships With Others[]

Smurf Girls[]

As the leader of the Smurf Girls, Willow shares a mother-daughter relationship with all of them. In Smurfs: Lost Village, she sent Blossom away from Papa Smurf for fear of him hurting her. She can be quite protective of them as well, as shown in "The Crow In Smurfy Grove", where she fears about the girls being alone in the village while with Papa Smurf.

Smurfstorm[]

Like the other Smurf Girls, the two have a mother-daughter relationship. Storm cares about Willow and often agrees with whatever she says, such as agreeing with Willow on being upset at Lily for breaking the rule of not smurfing to the other side of the wall and had never told Willow in "A Smurflily Strange World" of Smurfs: The Village Behind The Wall.

Willow is the only Smurf Girl that is able to reason with Storm when she is being hostile, such as calming her down when she distrusts the Smurfs from Smurf Village in Smurfs: The Lost Village and telling her about the lack of rules in her challenge against Hefty in "The Betrayal Of Smurfblossom".

Smurfblossom[]

Willow comforting Blossom

Like the other Smurf Girls, the two have a mother-daughter relationship. Willow sent her away from Papa Smurf for fear of him hurting her in Smurfs: The Lost Village. When Smurfette reverts to a lump of clay, Willow is comforting Blossom as she is crying.

Blossom respects Willow and her rules. In "Clumsy Smurf's Dragonfly" of Smurfs: The Village Behind The Wall, Clumsy asks if they can go to the dragonfly nests. Blossom refuses, saying that Willow forbids it. Willow often tries to resolve arguments with Blossom when happening, such as the fight with Lily and Storm in "Blossom Goes Wild!" and tries to find where the argument between Storm and Blossom started in "The Betrayal Of Smurfblossom".

Willow is seen talking and sitting with Blossom during the entirety of "Gargamel, Queen Of The Prom".

Papa Smurf[]

Holding hands

"Whatever you say, Papa-thing."

- Smurfwillow to Papa Smurf.

Willow and Papa Smurf often have a friendly relationship, sometimes hosting events together, such as "Smurf Racers" and announcing the time to open the Christmas presents in "A Smurfy Christmas".

The first time they met in Smurfs: The Lost Village, Willow attempted to protect her girls from Papa Smurf out of fear. Even after this, the two also get into arguments often in episodes such as "Leaf's Under The Weather", "The Sarsaparillo Run", and "Smurfy Magic Duel".

However, the latter episode, both of them complement each other's facial features and in Smurfs: The Lost Village, Smurfwillow is seen having an outing with Papa Smurf in the end credits after the two aged leaders recognizing the other as a kindred spirit. She called Papa Smurf "Papa-thing" in Smurfs: The Lost Village. In "Smurfwillow's Stick", Willow is shown to have a picture of Papa Smurf in her house.

In "Dreamer: Master Of Love", before they are almost eaten by a snake, they appear to harbor some feelings for each other. This is likely the closest episode to the two leaders starting a relationship. In "A Smurfy Christmas", they are seen exchanging gifts after Jokey deliberately mixes them up, with Papa Smurf nervously looking at Willow as she gives him his red pants.

Smurfette[]

Willow is a friend of Smurfette. Smurfette herself is close and trusting of Willow, as shown in Smurfs: The Lost Village, where she gives her and her friends hospitality, and in "Papa Smurf Leaves The Nest", Smurfette recommends to Brainy that Willow can help Papa Smurf, who they were then-unaware of the swap between himself and a sparrow.
