"Smurfy Magic Duel" is the nineteenth episode of Season 2 of the CGI TV series, The Smurfs.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Papa Smurf wants to prove to Willow that alchemy is more powerful than "natural" magic. He invites her to visit his laboratory for a small demonstration, which hardly impresses her. They end up challenging each other in a magic duel while using Smurfette and Lily as their subjects.

Summary[]

Reporter passes out papers in the early morning, one of which hits Papa Smurf. He looks at it and sees that the page says Willow practices "natural beneficial, and groundbreaking magic", much to his frustration and calls it "absurd". He gets even more annoyed when she calls alchemy magic a "piece of junk". Smurfette comes by and asks Papa Smurf how incredible the paper is, to which Papa Smurf sarcastically says "Yes" and says he has alchemy to do. Smurfette walks up to him and gives him an idea on Willow teaching him natural magic. Papa Smurf retaliates and says he doesn't need magic lessons. Smurfette is confused, as he would probably be eager to work with a colleague. Papa Smurf then tells Smurfette to invite Willow to the Smurf Village so he could show her what "real magic" is.

Later, Willow and Lily arrive at the village as Smurfette greets the two. The three go into Papa Smurf's laboratory, where he welcomes them and shows Willow his "outdated" still, his "dusty" spell book, and his ingredients full of "junk". He also says he has a hair of Gargamel's and a whisker of Azrael's, which surprises them. Willow then yawns as she looks at the potions. She claims that this is not as good as what the forest has to offer: herbs, flowers, and plants and natural magic is better. Papa Smurf counters by saying alchemy is much more powerful than a mere tea. Willow says that alchemy is for "little lab rats", which angers Papa Smurf as they challenge each other to a magic duel. They tell Smurfette and Lily that they'll be "guinea pigs" for the duel, to which they agree on.

During the duel, Reporter exaggerates it by giving various details about what the two Smurfs are about to do. First, Papa Smurf starts with something simple. As he makes the potion, Willow comments to Lily on Papa Smurf's "beautiful fluffy beard". Papa Smurf gives the potion to Smurfette, who possesses very bouncy shoes. However, the shoes are too bouncy, and she ends up flying around the room and hits the Village Bell. Reporter asks Papa Smurf what exactly the potion was for, and as he tries to explain, Willow says it's for going to the moon. Papa Smurf tells her that it's her turn. Suddenly, they see Clumsy and Dimwitty, who have been alerted for their fire brigade truck.

In the forest, Willow meditates while Papa Smurf comments to Smurfette on Willow's "pretty nose". Willow summons a magic spell on a flower, and it glows. She uses some of the pollen smell on Lily, who sneezes and begins chirping. Papa Smurf is impressed, but then quickly wipes away his smile. A bird and Lily converse a conversation together while Grouchy comes by and says "Me, I don't like..." but then imitates the sound and leaves. Lily talks to the birds some more, but suddenly starts sneezing out pollen. Reporter believes that she is allergic to "natural magic".

And so, Papa Smurf and Willow use various ingredients and potions to one-up each other - which are less beneficial to Smurfette and Lily, who end up receiving the short end of the stick (such as Smurfette getting metal objects stuck on her, Lily turning into an ordinary Smurf, etc.). Reporter says this is what he calls "Smurfy Magic".

The five Smurfs walk back to Papa Smurf's lab, where the village leader says Willow's magic is "entertaining", but he has saved his best for last - his "tele-smurfing" (teleporting) potion.

In the lab, Papa Smurf tells them that a rabbit is going to appear in his teleporting potion. However, he accidentally uses Gargamel and Azrael's hair and whisker, respectively and puts it into the potion. Suddenly, the potion rises, and Papa Smurf puts it outside. Gargamel and Azrael show up in the village while all the Smurfs run away in fear. Various Smurfs end up getting caught by Gargamel. Willow berates Papa Smurf until Gargamel shows up and the Smurfs in the lab run out... except Reporter, who introduces himself before getting caught.

The four Smurfs hide in a workshop, where Papa Smurf and Willow start arguing until Smurfette and Lily tell them to stop and say that all of the Smurfs are in danger, and they need to stop bickering before it's too late. The two apologize to each other and both have to unite their forces to stop Gargamel. Papa Smurf realizes he used all of his magic in the duel, but Willow tells him he can find everything he needs in the forest as she and Lily go into the forest. Smurfette, meanwhile, puts on her Smurf-Fu costume and gets ready to fight.

As Azrael is about to eat a Smurf, Smurfette arrives and tells him to pick on someone their own size. When Azrael chases her, she punches him while Papa Smurf brings his potions from his lab. When she leaves, Azrael is hurt while Gargamel captures Dimwitty.

In the forest near the snails' cage, Willow and Lily find what Papa Smurf needs and avoid getting caught by Azrael. They come back to the workshop to tell the village leader and they begin to work on the potion together. They are almost finished, and Papa Smurf tells Smurfette she needs to get a hair from Gargamel and a whisker from Azrael. She goes back outside, where Gargamel has caught every Smurf and sees Smurfette.

He tries to get her, but she plucks a hair out of his balding head and takes a whisker of Azrael's. The two chase her to the pot, where they disappear from the village and into their hovel, where they hit various objects. Gargamel then yells that he hates the Smurfs.

While Reporter says it's time to announce the winner of the contest, Papa Smurf and Willow try to say it's each other's fault. The two complement each other's magic and end up arguing on how their respective magic is terrific. Smurfette and Lily simply sigh.
