One quiet night in the Smurf Village, a moon-shaped ship floats high above, flashing all sorts of colored lights from its craters. Greedy, who happens to be awake for a midnight snack, has one of the lights shining on him and then some mud gets flung onto his midnight snack, making him think it's Jokey. Lazy goes out sleepwalking and gets pelted by mud, muttering that it must be Jokey. Brainy is busy burning the midnight oil while working on his next book when he hears the noise of the ship outside and goes to his door to take a look, only to get pelted by mud. Like the other two Smurfs, Brainy thinks Jokey is behind this.
By morning, Brainy and Greedy bring this matter before Papa Smurf, and he sees Lazy still walking around in his nightgown, still caked with mud. He decides to have a talk with Jokey, who denies that he has anything to do with the mud attacks on his fellow Smurfs, even as Smurfette shows up with her hair, face, and dress ruined by mud. But then, Clumsy appears on the scene and they witness together Clumsy getting pelted by mud. This makes the Smurfs look up and see that a flying moon ship is hovering over their village. Dreamy is so excited over the possibility that there may be beings from another world coming to visit them.
And as they continue to watch, to Brainy's horrid dismay, the moon ship comes down for a landing, right on top of Brainy's house. This makes the Smurfs wonder who is inside this ship, but as Clumsy gets close to one of the craters of the ship, he gets sucked into it. Papa Smurf takes a few Smurfs with him to go inside and rescue Clumsy, who at this moment is being examined by a family of muddy aliens who simply poke him with their fingers and make him laugh. As Papa Smurf's group explores the ship, Handy and Miner see its inner workings and believe that it must be what powers their ship. They soon find the room that the muddy aliens are examining Clumsy in, who introduce themselves as the Grimies as Papa Smurf introduces himself and the Smurfs with him. The leader of the Grimies, Grimy Daddy, explains that their ship needs repairs, which makes Handy willing to offer his assistance in fixing it while Papa Smurf offers a hand of friendship so that the Grimies and the Smurfs can learn about each other.
Outside the ship, the other Smurfs begin to get worried about Papa Smurf's group not returning and are thinking of going in after them when a ramp appears, and Papa Smurf and his group of Smurfs emerge from the ship. He assures his other little Smurfs that they are fine, and they have met some new friends. Vanity seems eager to meet these new friends until he and the other Smurfs see for themselves that these aliens are filthy and decides that he will stay in his house until they are gone. Papa Smurf explains that the Grimies are going to stay in the village for a while until their ship is repaired, and so he expects every Smurf to make their alien guests feel at home, to which they reluctantly comply.
During their stay, Grimy Daddy watches Painter working on a painting of Papa Smurf and puts his own mark on the painting, which Painter says turned his masteurpiesa into a messteurpiesa. Smurfette shows Grimy Mommy her flower garden, which makes her so pleased that her hand clapping accidentally splatters mud on Smurfette. She shrugs it off by saying she will just go in and change, but in her bedroom, she sees the two Grimy kids playing grown-up with her hats and dresses. Greedy goes to take a bite from one of his smurfberry pies and finds that there's mud in it, which Grimy Mommy admits to adding to make it taste better.
By evening, Papa Smurf promises the Grimies that Handy and Miner will help fix their moon ship by the following day so that they can get going. As the three Smurfs turn in for the night, the Grimy parents see that the Smurfs have everything while they themselves have nothing, so they decide to creep into various Smurf houses and take their possessions while they are sleeping. By morning, the Grimies are happily chanting that they have everything, This, however, attracts the attention of Papa Smurf, who hears from the Grimy parents that they like what the Smurf Village has to offer so much, they intend to stay there forever. Papa Smurf tells them that they can stay until their ship is repaired, but before he can say anything more, a group of anti-Grimy Smurfs show up demanding for the aliens to leave. This makes the Grimies upset, and it also makes Baby Grimy erupt in uncontrollable tears until Baby Smurf chooses to give the muddy infant his rattle to calm her down. Papa Smurf sees from this that if Baby Smurf can interact with a Grimy without any prejudice, the other Smurfs can learn to do so themselves, and that they must learn to share things so that the Grimies can create "their own smurfy way of life".
However, as Smurfette and Farmer help the Grimies plant smurfberry bushes on the surface of their moon ship, as Greedy shows Grimy Mommy how to properly make smurfberry pies, and as Handy and Miner get to work fixing the innards of the moon ship, Brainy's prejudices against the aliens wouldn't go away and he is still demanding for a loyal group of Smurfs to take action against them. His fellow Smurfs are starting to think the Grimies are worth being friends with rather than enemies and so desert Brainy's protest rally one by one, with Grouchy being the last, saying that he hates protests. Clumsy watches as Baby Smurf plays happily with Baby Grimy in a mud puddle and comments that he can't tell the two of them apart, while Farmer examines the mud from the Grimies and sees something useful that can be done with it.
Soon, the moon ship is all repaired and covered in healthy smurfberry bushes. The Grimies say that they are now doing things the smurfy way, and Papa Smurf says that the Smurfs are now doing things the grimy way. As examples, Farmer says that their mud makes great topsoil for their smurfberry fields, and Handy says that the mud also makes great bricks. Papa Smurf says that there are things of value that can be learned from every culture, and the Smurfs happily gather around to say their goodbyes to their new alien friends as they board their moon ship in preparation for departure. However, Vanity only emerges from his house to see that the Grimies are departing, feeling glad that he hasn't gotten splattered with mud, until a bit of mud from the ship hits him in the face.
