Synopsis

Clumsy is desperate to take part in the Great Smurf Games and win the prize, which is a magic sphere that grants a wish to the winner.

Summary

Part 1

It's an ordinary day in the village as the Smurfs prepare for the Great Smurf Games, which Brainy is busy advertising around. Suddenly, to his annoyance, Clumsy comes running and trips into him. Clumsy tells him that he wants to take part in the contest as well, but Brainy informs him via his megaphone that he must have teams of three. Clumsy realizes that this will be hard, because his klutziness makes everyone fear him. This is proven when he asks a nearby Smurf to be a part of his team. The Smurfs and Smurf Girls walk towards the arena to listen to Papa Smurf's big announcement about the games. He informs them that four different fireflies from Willow's crystal ball will determine the four Smurfs to participate in the first couple of obstacles in a relay race against the forest. Willow tells them that the sphere will grant the winners a wish. The Smurfs are excited to imagine their wishes, especially Clumsy, who imagines himself as a "Graceful Smurf" being cheered at by his community.

Willow warns the Smurfs that if the sphere catches them cheating, its light will go out and advises to play by the rules. She then releases the fireflies with a single blow, and they pick the four Smurfs: Poet, Smurfette, Grouchy, and Storm. Clumsy, who fell off the benches while the Smurfs were being chosen, is disappointed that he wasn't picked and walks away in sadness.

Papa Smurf sends three of the Smurfs on a stork to drop them off at different points of the relay race. He gives Smurfette the sphere out of natural trust, while Smurfette assures Papa Smurf that she'll take care of it. She runs into the forest while the stork takes off.

Meanwhile, the evil wizard Gargamel awaits the games too, and tells Azrael he is hoping to capture some Smurfs in the forest with the sphere that they have. His wish for the sphere is to capture all of the Smurfs. He orders Azrael to come with him to get some traps.

In the forest, Smurfette runs with the sphere, avoiding obstacles. After she sees a bell, she gets caught in a trap, done by none other than Gargamel. He and Azrael gloat and open the cage - only for Smurfette to confuse and knock Gargamel to the ground. Azrael mocks him for getting himself beat and then the cage falling on his head. Smurfette then arrives to Poet and tells him to hurry because Gargamel is now nearby. She gives him the sphere.

Poet runs with the sphere while rhyming, but suddenly comes under yet another trap from Gargamel, complete with the same bell. Poet gets catapulted into the air, and when he comes down, he falls on Gargamel (but narrowly avoids getting caught) and the lizard suddenly takes the sphere. Gargamel insults the lizard and tries to take the sphere, but Poet tries to put a stop to him by ordering the lizard to listen to him. The lizard sides with Poet and bites Gargamel, giving the sphere to Poet. Azrael continues to mock him over his failures. Poet gives the sphere to Grouchy, who is only stating what he doesn't like.

Nearby, Clumsy is explaining his problems to a caterpillar when Grouchy accidentally falls into him. Clumsy runs to take it back; Grouchy attempts to follow, but is immediately caught by Gargamel's trap. The wizard angrily asks Grouchy where the sphere is, but Grouchy is not budging, instead just moping. Gargamel responds by putting him in his robe. He then successfully grabs Storm, who was doing archery, as well. Clumsy is running after the sphere and runs into a cave. Unfortunately for him, he runs into Voltaire.

In Gargamel's hovel, the wizard frustratingly orders Grouchy and Storm to tell him where the sphere is. Both continue to refuse. Just then, Dwayne and Rowena come down the hovel's staircase, annoyed at his ramblings. Gargamel is outraged by their snarky comments and hopes to get something out of the captured Smurfs. Storm is concerned about the sphere. Grouchy confesses to her that he had last gave it to Clumsy, which she is worried about. Gargamel is ecstatic about this news until Storm tells him that he has to be a Smurf and win the Great Smurf Games to get any orders out of the ball. This surprises Dwayne and Rowena, who dream of getting rid of uncle Gargamel once and for all. The kids tell Gargamel they want to be a part of the games, which gives the wizard an idea to turn into a Smurf.

Gargamel prepares the potion to be a Smurf. Dwayne and Rowena, feeling evil, decide to swap one of the beans with a snail potion. Rowena distracts Gargamel by asking him about his wish to the sphere while Dwayne dumps the snail potion into the beakers. They all proceed to eat them, and Dwayne and Rowena become Grouchy and Storm, respectively. Gargamel, however, fares much worse - he's a measly snail. The two kids run off to find Clumsy while making fun of their furious uncle.

Meanwhile, Clumsy is in a pickle with Voltaire, who ends up freezing him out of his cave. While "Grouchy" and "Storm" make their way to find Clumsy, they get their wish as a frozen Clumsy crashes into a tree. Clumsy tells what he assumes to be Grouchy and Storm that he found the sphere, and they go to the village.

The three arrive to the village, where Clumsy tells Papa Smurf that the sphere stopped glowing. Papa Smurf tells him that it stopped glowing because he was not one of the chosen Smurfs. He gives it to "Storm", whose touch continues to blacken the sphere. He finds this strange but brushes it off and Willow lights it again. Papa Smurf believes that it is now time to start the Great Smurf Games.

Unfortunately for Gargamel, he is not doing the best as a snail, and only succeeds in getting out of his hovel.

Part 2

The Great Smurf Games is now beginning. Papa Smurf and Willow host it while Reporter tells the teams:

"Grouchy" and "Storm" begin to contemplate on this and believe that Clumsy will be a problem. Papa Smurf starts the game while Reporter begins to explain the games. The first game is the "Hammer Throw" and the winner of it gets 9 points tops. The first contestant is Hefty, who throws it at six points. This wakes up a nearby Smurf who was sleeping on the job. Hefty is ticked at the lack of points and gives it to Handy, who scores only three points. Handy complains about his bad aims, which agitate Brainy. Vanity, meanwhile, can't even throw the hammer, fearing it will interfere with his complexion, which annoys his teammates, and gets him a whopping 0 points.

"Grouchy" is excited to show off his spectacular skills, but "Storm" advises him not to blow it. Despite this, he does indeed blow it, and instead bounces on the walls of houses. However, it gets him at 9 points, which surprises even him. Willow sees how happy "Grouchy" is and finds it shocking.

Meanwhile in the hovel, Azrael has kept lookout for Grouchy and Storm, threatening them. As Grouchy sulks, he sits down, which shakes the cauldron. Storm gets an idea. The Gargamel snail, elsewhere in the forest is still having no luck and is growing more mad by the moment.

The next presented game is the "Smurf-Hop Race" which Clumsy takes part in. Jokey, Blossom, and Meteorite are versing him as well. As the whistle is blown by Brainy, the Smurfs take off. Meteorite ends up becoming the winner, being able to outrun everyone, with Blossom and Jokey being possible seconds. Clumsy, meanwhile, is failing to keep up and eventually trips on Smurf after Smurf until a gigantic Smurf pile is made and traps Blossom and Jokey. Everyone is mad at Clumsy for this blunder. Reporter gives a tie to all four teams.

The next event is now archery. "Storm" tries to shoot the arrow to the target but fails. The sleeping Smurf once again wakes up out of his daze and dashes away. Clumsy thinks Storm is being sweet by "purposely" being clumsy for the events, but advises he just wants to win. "Storm" and "Grouchy" are worried that Clumsy is sabotaging their winning streak. They suggest cheating, which Clumsy objects to, but to no avail as he crashes into a barrel.

The cheating streak begins; all of the challenges are now being done by one of the three, including archery at a couple of mushrooms (Rowena makes the mushroom move to where Clumsy was hitting it) and weight lifting (Rowena uses a magnet under the table so "Grouchy" can lift it with no trouble). Clumsy congratulates his team for supposedly not cheating. Papa Smurf and Willow, however, suspect there's more to the win than they had planned.

In the hovel, Storm and Grouchy continue to bounce on the cauldron. and Storm gets an idea. She decides to insult Azrael, which makes the cat jump up and accidentally free them. Storm and Grouchy escape the hovel.

The time is now for the final challenge: the Tricycle Smurfathon. The contestants for this one are Clumsy, Handy, Bubble, and Vanity. Reporter assumes that Clumsy will win this one, but wants to stay tuned. They begin racing around the village one the whistle is rung. However, "Grouchy" sabotages the race and sends them into different directions. Eventually, the Smurfs (sans Clumsy) end up in Handy's workshop, and crash.

Clumsy, meanwhile, avoids any problems and successfully reaches the finish line. However, the minute the other Smurfs catch up to him, "Storm" had planned this beforehand and made the other contestants' tricycles break down. Handy and Vanity then take the lead, with Vanity winning, followed by Handy, and then Clumsy. Just then, Brainy tells Reporter that the trikes have to be in one piece; as a result, Reporter marks Clumsy as the winner.

Just as Team Purple is about to be given the sphere, the real Storm and Grouchy arrive on the scene to tell everyone that the fake Smurfs are Dwayne and Rowena. This shocks everybody, and now that they have been caught, they don't care to hide, insult Clumsy, and attempt to steal the sphere themselves while calling Clumsy a "walking disaster". This enrages Clumsy, and he gets back at the troublemaking kids by throwing a bone arrow at them, followed by running on his trike and using a plunger to catapult himself into crashing into the kids. They all fall into the village bell, and the sphere is saved by Papa Smurf as the Smurfs cheer.

While Reporter and the other Smurfs hold Clumsy and cheer for him, Hefty grabs Dwayne and Rowena as Papa Smurf contemplates what to do with them. Jokey gets an idea.

Said idea involves Dwayne and Rowena to get catapulted into the forest, coincidentally falling onto the Gargamel snail. All three transform back to humans.

Papa Smurf rewards Clumsy the sphere for his honesty and expresses his gratitude for him. Even though some other Smurfs may not always think so, Clumsy saves the village more often than not and he is perfect just the way he is. Clumsy thinks of his wish, and realizes that he doesn't need a wish, as all he wanted to do was be included, but he imagines having a giant golden cup as a souvenir. He gets his wish and gets trapped in the large cup. He and the other Smurfs all laugh at this.
