Synopsis[]
On Halloween, Smurfette gives Wimpy a magic pumpkin to help him scare the other Smurfs.
Summary[]
It is the evening as Farmer gives Papa Smurf a fresh new pumpkin. Papa Smurf is excited, since this is going to make his lab super scary. They come across Wimpy, who is busy trying to lift a pumpkin, but fails due to his low strength. Hefty comes by and lifts multiple pumpkins without any problems. Wimpy is mad at him, saying he was going to lift all of the pumpkins, but Hefty simply says they would never have Halloween with his little arms. His comments make Wimpy annoyed, and he gives him a weakly little "Boo!", which doesn't even scare Hefty one bit. Farmer observes this and laughs at him, saying he has seen butterflies scarier than him. Hefty gives him a tiny pumpkin - which he fails to hold. Farmer and Hefty chuckle. Wimpy sadly walks off, with another attempt to scare a butterfly failing.
Wimpy sits near the village river when Smurfette walks up to him, wondering what he is doing here as the party is about to begin. Wimpy does not want to go, saying he won't scare anyone with his wormy arms. Smurfette says he can, at least with a disguise that's scary enough. Wimpy cheers up a bit, but his happiness ends as he probably won't be able to scare Hefty. As he throws the pumpkin he was holding in the river, Smurfette gets an idea.
She gives him a "magic" pumpkin that can frighten everybody. Wimpy asks her where she found it, Smurfette lies and says it was from Leaf, the nature fairy, and she gave it to her for him. She explains that a pumpkin from a fairy is magical as she throws confetti in the air. Wimpy believes this lie as he is ready to test the pumpkin. He "scares" Smurfette, who says he looks super scary in the costume.
Wimpy goes to test on Farmer, who doesn't see his "scary" costume. Smurfette informs him to get Wimpy to go to the party, she told him that she gave him a magic pumpkin that can scare everybody. Farmer catches on and pretends to be scared, which delights Wimpy. He sees Farmer's snails, who are busy eating grass. When Wimpy goes to scare them, they don't pay any attention to him until Farmer uses a Gargamel mask to scare the snails. They race away. Wimpy is again happy and runs to the party. While Smurfette is happy for Wimpy, Farmer reminds her that everyone else has to be scared, a thought that suddenly catches Smurfette's eyes.
It is the night of the Halloween party as Papa Smurf announces the festivities officially open. The Smurfs cheer as Wimpy arrives at the village, ready to scare some Smurfs. He finds Scaredy hiding in a barrel and as he touches him, he panics and runs away. Wimpy is gleeful that the pumpkin still works and walks off. Scaredy runs in his barrel and reaches Smurfette's location. She thanks him for "playing along" with Wimpy's ruse, much to Scaredy's sheer confusion.
Wimpy goes to the party as Smurfette catches up to him, asking him to take the pumpkin off now that he knows he can be scary and offers him a rubber duck. Wimpy declines, saying for once, he gets to scare everyone. He tells her he's going to scare Hefty now. Smurfette stalls him before she goes to Hefty, saying his shoelaces are untied, though he points out Smurfs don't have shoelaces.
Smurfette runs to Hefty and explains to him he has to be scared of Wimpy. She runs off before he can say anything as Wimpy walks by and "scares" him. Hefty pretends to be scared - lighting a bunch of jet packs in the process. Hefty accidentally holds one, causing him to fly around in the air. Wimpy sees that his arms aren't so "wormy" after all. Hefty crashes onto the ground as Wimpy goes to scare Papa Smurf. Smurfette thanks Hefty, who has taken damage from the jet pack.
Wimpy goes to Papa Smurf, who is at the party. Smurfette runs up to him and asks for him to be scared of Wimpy. When the pumpkin-wearing Smurf arrives, Papa Smurf gives off a fitting performance of being scared. Wimpy is happy and says the leader isn't so brave after all... which irritates Papa Smurf as Smurfette thanks him. Everything gets harder and harder for Smurfette as she has to go around the village and tell Smurfs to be scared of Wimpy, including Brainy (who has to go to the bathroom) and Vanity (who gets scared when Smurfette uses a squiggly mirror). Smurfette is now tired and goes to relax somewhere.
Later, various Smurfs are ready to eat Chef's food, though their happiness is ruined as Wimpy arrives to "scare" them. The Smurfs are much more unhappy to see him and leave, even Greedy, who takes a muffin and walks off.
As Papa Smurf offers Smurfette some more drinks, the Smurfs are tired of Wimpy constantly trying to scare them every few minutes. Jokey additionally claims tricks are his territory. Papa Smurf tells her while it is nice to help Wimpy, it's time she took the pumpkin off of him or they will do it themselves. This worries Smurfette, not wanting to hurt his feelings.
While the pumpkin-wearing Wimpy prepares to scare all of the Smurfs at once, Smurfette catches up to him once more and tries to get the pumpkin back, but Wimpy believes she's joking. She then tries to say they will run out of pumpkin juice, but Wimpy still won't give the pumpkin up, since he can finally scare anyone he wants and he will never take it off, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. As he walks away, Smurfette is agitated and plots to take it off his head.
Wimpy "scares" multiple Smurfs as they give off unconvincing shrieks of fear. Unbeknownst to him, Smurfette continually tries and fails to get the pumpkin off of Wimpy's head because he keeps leaving when she tries. When she gets an object, it will belong to another Smurf, such as Jokey's present costume or Grouchy's rubber duck costume.
Later, Wimpy crosses paths with the squiggly mirror that scared Vanity. Smurfette arrives and tells Wimpy to stop, since Halloween is supposed to be fun, not scary, a thought that is shared with Scaredy. As she brings up how he is "as scary as an ogre", Wimpy thinks of Bigmouth and goes to give the ogre a fright of his life. He runs to Bigmouth's house as Smurfette is shocked.
Wimpy arrives at Bigmouth's house as Wimpy approaches his door. He knocks on it, just in time as Smurfette has followed him here and the two collide with each other and fall. The ogre had opened the door before this as Smurfette and Wimpy crash into Bigmouth's house. The pumpkin breaks, something that devastates Wimpy. Bigmouth runs after him, so Smurfette threatens to fight Bigmouth. Realizing she's getting nowhere; she starts chasing him around the house. As she runs, Wimpy hides in a pumpkin and Smurfette is captured. Just then, Wimpy gets an idea.
Bigmouth is about to get his blue snack, but just then, Wimpy turns the large pumpkin he was in towards Bigmouth, who is immediately frightened as the Wimpy pumpkin tells him to let go of Smurfette. He obeys and runs out of his house, screaming for his mom.
Smurfette is happy, as Wimpy finally really scared somebody, but informs him the pumpkin wasn't magical at all, which upsets Wimpy, but he tells her it's okay and he had a great time as a scary Smurf. Now that he scared Bigmouth, he is ready to go scare... Gargamel!
Trivia[]
- Wimpy's voice greatly differs from his previous voice in "Who's Heftier?". Here, his voice is very similar to Greedy's voice.
- This is the second Halloween special of the series. The first is "The Scariest Smurf".
- The original French title directly translates to "The Magic Pumpkin", which is the English title for this episode. This and "Lost Cat" are the first titles to directly translate from the French title to the English title.
- This episode and "The Scariest Smurf" only air in reruns on Nickelodeon USA in the month of October, making these episodes extremely rare to find on American TV, since they are Halloween-themed episodes. As such, "DRIIINNGGGGG!" and "Lost Cat" also do not air often, as they are the series' respective sister episodes.
- Most of the costumes are the same costumes as "The Scariest Smurf":
- Wimpy most notably wears the pumpkin costume Brainy wore.
- Smurfette wears her "Great Cassandra" costume used in "Who's Heftier?" and "The Scariest Smurf".
- Papa Smurf wears the vampire costume that he wore towards the end of that episode.
- Both Hefty (in place of his knife costume) and Handy wear the skeleton costume worn in the previous special.
- Jokey has the same gag box.
- Grouchy wears Dimwitty's "Smurfasorus Rex" costume.
- Strangely, Dimwitty does not appear in this episode.
- Vanity is wearing the same magician costume. Brainy also wears this instead of the pumpkin costume he wore.
- Some unnamed Smurfs are wearing brown hats with a black ring on it and black pants.
- Greedy is wearing a black hat with brown pants. Unnamed Smurfs previously wore this in "The Scariest Smurf".
- Storm, Blossom, and Lily can be seen wearing costumes:
- Storm is wearing a black dress with a skeleton on it. (See Goofs below)
- Blossom can be seen with black hair. She is additionally wearing a black necklace and a yellow dress (similar to her dress in Smurfs: The Lost Village, but lighter).
- Lily wears an orange and green dress and green shoes. She seems to have painted herself orange and she is wearing a green leaf on her hat.
- While not seen at the party, Farmer uses a Gargamel mask to scare his snails.
Goofs[]
- During the course of the party, Storm goes from wearing her normal green dress to a black dress with a skeleton on it.
