Synopsis[]
Clumsy loses Papa Smurf's magic teleporting stick and finds a wrong replacement, so the Smurfs must find it before Bigmouth chomps down their smurfberry crop.
Plot Summary[]
Clumsy is carrying a big basket of smurfberries into the Smurf Village, pleased to know that he hasn't dropped them yet, when he sees some flashes coming from Papa Smurf's laboratory that make him drop the basket and spill the berries. He looks through the window and sees the village leader using an incantation to make a magic stick, and soon the magic stick comes to life and starts hopping all around the laboratory, breaking the beakers that are on the table before Papa Smurf finally grabs a hold of the stick. Clumsy enters the laboratory to help Papa Smurf and asks him what kind of magic stick he made. Papa Smurf says that this magic stick can make things return to their former appearance just by pointing the stick at the object and saying "smurf up". He demonstrates by pointing the magic stick at the broken beakers and saying "smurf up", and instantly they appear on the table good as new. Papa Smurf also shows that the magic stick can make things disappear by tapping the stick at the object and saying "smurf away", which he does to a bucket in his laboratory. However, Papa Smurf says that the disappeared object ends up reappearing in some other location, as the bucket now appears over Clumsy's head, saying it's a little detail that needs to be worked out.
Is the magic stick going to clean up Clumsy's mess?
Glad to finally have a magic stick that he can do important things with it, Papa Smurf puts it in his closet and then heads off to Homnibus to return the magic formula he used for the stick. Clumsy wants to borrow the stick so he could collect the smurfberries he spilled from the basket, but as he looks in one of Papa Smurf's closets, a whole bunch of items spill out from it. He looks in the other closet and finds the stick, quickly using it to put the spilled items back into the other closet before he uses the stick on the spilled smurfberries. He is so glad to see what the magic stick can do that he decides to show it off to his fellow Smurfs.
Out in the forest, Clumsy greets Brainy and Smurfette as they bring in baskets of smurfberries, telling them that Papa Smurf now has a magic stick. Brainy scoffs at that, saying that only Homnibus has a magic stick. Clumsy proves that the magic stick is real, though he does so by accidentally causing a log they were crossing to disappear by tapping it with the stick and saying "smurf away". Brainy is now convinced, but Smurfette complains that Clumsy has now made a mess because they have fallen into the river. Clumsy offers to fix it, but he looks and sees that the magic stick is now floating downstream. He wonders what he's going to do about the magic stick since Papa Smurf doesn't know that he took it without permission, when Smurfette sees what she thinks is the magic stick and hands it to Clumsy, who is then eager to return it to Papa Smurf.
In the meantime, Vanity has gotten mud on him when he finds the magic stick, thinking it to be a walking stick. He looks at his reflection in the water and says that he needs to "smurf up", and instantly the mud is gone, and he is clean again. As Clumsy barely manages to return what he thinks is the magic stick to Papa Smurf's house and leaves through the window, spilling the smurfberries again, Vanity takes a look at Painter's latest masteurpiesa, which he calls "Smurfette On The Half-Shell". Vanity says it's not bad but suggests that a better subject would be "Vanity On The Half-Shell". Painter strongly objects to that idea, and Vanity relents, saying that it was an idea he thought he'd "smurf up". He points the stick at the painting when he said that, and instantly the canvas is now blank, making Painter so upset with Vanity as the painting took a great amount of effort to make. Vanity now looks at the blank canvas and wonders if the stick he's holding had anything to do with the painting now vanishing.
Out in the forest, as the Smurfs are busy picking smurfberries, Bigmouth makes an unwelcome visit, feeling hungry and deciding to satisfy himself with smurfberries. The Smurfs return to the village to get Papa Smurf's help to deal with the situation, and Papa Smurf takes what he thinks is the magic stick with him to make Bigmouth disappear. Clumsy tries to get Papa Smurf not to use the stick, knowing that it isn't the magic stick, but Papa Smurf says there's no time to lose, so Clumsy reluctantly comes along.
In the meantime, Vanity now visits Handy who is busy working on a machine that he calls a smurfberry dough maker. Vanity wants Handy to take a look at the stick he is carrying, but Handy is too busy with the machine and then goes off to find a ratchet that he needs. Vanity looks at the machine and wonders aloud about how much dough it can "smurf up"... but as he says "smurf up", he points the stick at the machine, and suddenly it reverts back to its original form as parts. Handy returns and sees that the machine is now in its unbuilt state and blames Vanity for ruining it. Vanity gets tossed along with his stick, and he lands near Greedy, who says that Vanity almost made him drop his firewood. Vanity then offers the magic stick to add to the firewood, saying that it's been nothing but trouble for him.
Papa Smurf arrives at the smurfberry patch in the forest, ready to deal with Bigmouth before he eats all the smurfberries. He strikes Bigmouth's foot with the stick and says "smurf away", but instead of making the ogre disappear, it only hurts his foot and makes him mad, tossing the village leader away. Vanity comes along to see what's going on while Papa Smurf wonders why his magic stick won't work. Clumsy then says that he took the magic stick and then he lost it in the river, which makes Papa Smurf so upset with Clumsy that he says that Clumsy should have told him beforehand. Vanity then tells Papa Smurf about the stick he had found, and Papa Smurf realizes that Vanity had found the magic stick that Clumsy had lost. Vanity says he gave the stick to Greedy for firewood, and so Papa Smurf rushes into Greedy's kitchen to find it.
Greedy at this point is pulling a smurfberry souffle out of the oven when Papa Smurf calls his name, causing him to drop the souffle on the floor. He asks Greedy what he did with the sticks he collected, and Greedy says he used them to heat up his oven. Then Clumsy finds the magic stick in the firewood that Greedy hasn't yet used, and Papa Smurf tests it out by pointing it at the fallen souffle and saying "smurf up". The souffle is then restored, and Papa Smurf now has the magic stick again.
He returns to what is left of the smurfberry patch in the forest, where Smurfette is watching Bigmouth get ready to eat the last smurfberry bush. He then strikes Bigmouth's foot with the stick and says "smurf away", and instantly the ogre vanishes, only to reappear clinging onto a tree branch which then breaks away and causes crab apples to fall down. Bigmouth soon finds himself desiring to eat crab apples instead of smurfberries.
Back in the village, Papa Smurf says that to prevent further accidents from happening, like almost losing the last smurfberry bush to Bigmouth, he will now give the magic stick to Homnibus for safekeeping. Brainy, however, offers to be the holder of the stick, saying that with him, all of Papa Smurf's problems will "smurf away"... but as he says that he points the stick at the village leader and causes him to reappear on top of a chimney. It is then that Brainy realizes Papa Smurf's wisdom in this matter and decides the best course of action is to get rid of the thing.
