"The Sand Witch" is a Season 5 episode from the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Papa Smurf goes to the beach house so he will write his biography in peace and Baby Smurf sneaks out with him. Later, Baby Smurf is taken by a monster and brought him to the Sand Witch.

Plot Summary[]

Baby Smurf happily plays with a bear in his bed while Papa Smurf writes a biography. Just then, Nat comes in, asking Papa if he could spend the night, to which he accepts. Nat brings in several creatures, to which both Papa and Baby don't mind either. Later, Baby is sleeping, and Papa is back to writing his biography, but Sassette comes in, but this irritates him as she didn't knock. She comes back, irritating him even more, but he calms down and tells her about what he is writing, but Sassette does not keep this a secret and everybody wants to help him. Papa Smurf groans over the number of questions.

The next day, Papa Smurf decides to leave the village, saying he will get more done at the seashore. Hefty says they will take care of Baby while he is gone. As he is leaving, Brainy already orders the Smurfs to start cleaning. He is too demanding and gets thrown out of the village, explaining to Papa Smurf that he just wanted to say goodbye.

Meanwhile, a monster, known as Bubba, arrives to the Sand Witch's house, disrupting her from her sleep and tells him this better be good news. Bubba gives her a bucket of sand, annoying her. She explains him nobody loves her, and gifts like buckets of sand won't change that, upsetting Bubba. During the sunset, Papa arrives, happily getting peace and quiet... but is surprised to discover that Baby shows up. He says he will take him home in the morning, unaware Bubba is behind him.

The Smurfs in the village are unaware about this and Sassette rings the village bell to warn the other Smurfs that Baby is supposedly missing, scaring everyone and Handy and Hefty call for search parties. Handy tells Brainy and the Smurflings to stay in the village to look for him.

Meanwhile, Papa and Baby are sleeping in the sand, but the fire goes out and Baby wakes up and ends up using his powers to create a small, warm house. The same monster appears and is scared from it and sinks into the ocean. Suddenly, the Smurfs are looking for Papa Smurf and Baby, waking both of them up. The searchers are happy to discover that Baby is fine. They also discover it is a beach house and they end up playing in it, much to Papa's disappointment. Just then, Jokey, Poet, Vanity, and Lazy arrive at the beach house, with Poet telling Smurfette that they were searching for the searchers.

In the village, Dreamy tells Brainy and the Smurflings that they will look for Papa, Baby, and the other Smurfs while he and the Smurflings stay behind. Brainy is angry that he is unable to go with any searchers.

Meanwhile in the beach house, the Smurfs discover Papa and Baby have gone to another place so Papa can write his book. Papa tells Baby he will get lots of firewood to be warm so he can write his book in peace. In the village again, Brainy searches for the Smurflings, but Nat and Sassette know that if he finds them, they will have to do chores, so they look for Baby as well.

While Papa Smurf is gathering firewood, he and Baby come across a Bubba monster that takes Baby. Papa tries to run after Baby, but to no avail. He ends up thinking of a ship and runs back into the village.

In the village, he discovers nobody but Brainy is there. He explains that group after group went looking for Baby, so Papa Smurf calls Feathers to ride on with Brainy on the back to go to the Sand Witch's island, home of the Bubba monster.

The Bubba brings Baby to the Sand Witch, where Baby gives her multiple kisses and notices that this creature actually likes her, pleasing both her and the Bubba monster. Papa and Brainy arrive on the island and the witch assume they are Baby's family, so she tells Bubba to hide him. Papa asks if anybody is home, but she simply dumps sand on Brainy. Papa Smurf hears Baby in the house and he and Brainy ride Feathers to chase Bubba, who has Baby. Papa Smurf uses Feathers to tickle Bubba, and he drops Baby safely onto Feathers. However, the Sand Witch turns them into sand, making Baby cry.

Baby is now with the witch, still crying, also making Bubba and the witch cry, so the witch turns them back to normal. She gives him back to them, explaining that nobody ever loved her like Baby. Papa Smurf, however, explains that her Bubba actually loved her. She is now happily with Bubba, hugging him.

Later, various Smurfs gather around Papa Smurf, asking to stay in the beach for more days and Papa says he will think about it. Smurfette asks if he will keep writing his biography and Papa says instead, he will enjoy living it rather than writing about it. He and the other Smurfs jump into the pool, but Brainy asks who will clean the other village. As he sees the others having fun, he adds it's not going to be him, before diving into the pool with everyone else.

Trivia[]

  • Both Papa Smurf and Brainy claim that every one is gone from the village; presumably this episode takes place before "Puppy" as Puppy does not appear nor is mentioned as being in the village.
  • In the syndicated version of the episode, the entire soundtrack was in 2x higher than usual in pitch octave.
    • This version is also used on the UK DVD.
  • The entire scene where Jokey, Vanity, Poet, and Lazy arrive at the beach house is cut from syndication airings.

Goofs[]

  • In the shot of the Smurfs asking if Papa Smurf needs help with his book, Snappy does not seem to be wearing his shirt.
    • In addition, Jokey is seen and speaks in Papa Smurf's house but did not appear in the previous shot of the Smurfs running into it.
  • Snappy and Slouchy leave with Nat and Sassette to look for Baby, but they do not appear after the scene where they leave the village. Despite this, Papa Smurf realizes nobody is in the village.
