Season 1, which aired from April 18, 2021 to March 20, 2022 (and in the U.S. from September 10, 2021 to July 14, 2022), reintroduces us to the main cast of characters commonly known as the Smurfs -- the village leader Papa Smurf, the beautiful Smurfette, the wisdom-spewing Brainy, the muscleman Hefty, the mechanic Handy, the prankster Jokey, the klutzy Clumsy and the low-intelligent Dimwitty as the fire brigade, the food-maker Chef, the adorable Baby Smurf, the narcissistic Vanity, the curmudgeon Grouchy, the field owner Farmer, the tribe of Smurf Girls, and various others -- plus their main adversaries, Gargamel the evil human wizard and his pet cat Azrael, as well as an ogre Bigmouth.

Season 1 consists of 52 episodes, each one showing new stories, not adaptations of comics or other older stories.

In its infancy stage, most of the episodes run 11 minutes, with the exceptions of half-hour specials such as "The Pluffs!", which are split as 13-minute two-part episodes as well. The series' grasp on staying completely faithful (paraphrased as "pure Smurf DNA") to the comics and its current philosophy is not fully developed yet -- as the basic philosophy and characterization of the main cast for the series is more or less the same as in Peyo's original comics, which would be made fully developed in the next season onwards. It should be noted that the developers of the series are still exploring the philosophy of the comic books in precise detail during the beginning of development of the series.

The series was almost entirely produced in Belgium, with 75% of the animation completed at Dupuis' DreamWall animation studio in the city of Charleroi. Its CGI animation style is mainly based on the film Smurfs: The Lost Village and serves as a offshoot to the comic books.

The show was first announced by Peyo Productions in 2017. The next year, its European broadcasters were announced: Ketnet (Flanders), TF1 (France), KiKA (Germany), and La Trois (Wallonia). In 2020, it was reported that the broadcast rights had been picked up by the American entertainment brand Nickelodeon for several of its channels, but the airing agreement does not extend to the original 1980s Smurfs series (which continues to be distributed by Warner Bros. in North America).

A 26-episode second season was announced in February 2022, as well as several movies in the works.

Intro Sequence

The intro starts off with three Smurfs putting up a P sign that says "Peyo Productions", with Smurfstorm and Smurfwillow watching. Suddenly, Brainy's Smurfway comes in with Brainy on it. All three Smurfs fall down. Papa Smurf is busy walking with potions and Brainy crashes into him. Clumsy and Dimwitty drive their fire brigade truck around the village as Papa Smurf and Brainy are on the smurfway. Smurfette is shown with her Smurf-Fu costume. The theme transitions to Gargamel's castle, where the Smurfs are snooping around and Gargamel and Azrael catch them. The Smurf Girls are seen again, and Storm shoots a bone arrow at Gargamel's head. Handy then transitions the scene with his jetpack and we see Papa Smurf, Storm, Brainy, Handy, Hefty, Clumsy, Dimwitty, Blossom, Jokey, Willow, and Smurfette.

  • To have Henry Gifford, Barbara Weber-Boustani, Marie Eynard, and Romain Cislo as writers and Lionel Brousse and Alexandre Ulmann as storyboard artists.
  • To have Bérangère McNeese as the voice of Baby Smurf, Cherise Silvestri as Azrael, Charlie Cattrall as the voice of Painter, and Mark Irons as the voice of Glammy (as he was mistranslated as Harmony). They are replaced by Kaycie Chase (both Baby and Azrael), Madeleine Fletcher (Painter), and Luke Calzonetti (Glammy).

Video Releases

• On June 14, 2022, Nickelodeon released the first nine episodes of the series on DVD. The next nine episodes were released on October 4, 2022, and the last nine episodes were released on January 31, 2023.
• The entire season can be found streaming on Paramount+.

• This season began streaming on Netflix in the United States and other countries on May 1, 2023.
