Plot Summary[]
In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is preparing to make his appearance at the Wizard's Convention when a crow delivers a message telling him that he's not invited to attend, with the host of the convention also saying that there's no such thing as a Smurf. Infuriated by the rejection, Gargamel decides he will show those doubting wizards that the Smurfs do exist. He looks at his chart of moon phases and notices that this night would be the final phase of the full moon, which is when the Great Book Of Spells would awaken to grant Gargamel his wishes for one full day.
By evening, the evil wizard and his cat Azrael go down into the cellar where the book is kept sitting on a lectern, saying that not only will he get a Smurf so he can attend the Wizard's Convention, but also, he will fly there. Before the book Gargamel bows and says, "Oh, Great Book Of Spells, upon whose pages dwell secrets no one tells, awake for Gargamel". The book opens and its spirit awakens to tell Gargamel that it's evening and that he would rather not be awakened until morning. Gargamel tries to insist that the book should answer his summons, but the book shocks him with a magical force, reinforcing its desire to remain undisturbed until morning. Gargamel mutters how cranky the book is when he leaves the cellar, but realizes that he must be patient, for pretty soon he will be flying. Meanwhile, at the castle where the Wizard's Convention is being held, its host assures the attending wizards that Gargamel will not be showing up anytime soon before he proceeds with the first matter at hand.
By morning, as the Smurfs wake up to a brand new day in the village, Gargamel wakes up to visit the Great Book Of Spells so that he could get his wish granted. He tries to wake it up by reaching for the book, but the spirit holds him back with a magical force, reminding the rude wizard to speak the incantation. After speaking the incantation, Gargamel makes his first wish to the book to give him the biggest bird that he can ride on. The Great Book Of Spells gives Gargamel a ritual to perform, and after it is performed, the wizard finds himself on the back of an ostrich who starts running like mad out of the hovel and into the forest. Gargamel then commands the ostrich to fly, but he is unaware that ostriches cannot fly, and so it continues to run amuck taking Gargamel with it. Along the way, though, Painter and Clumsy are out in the forest to work on a painting when the ostrich passes by them. Gargamel sees them but cannot get the ostrich to stop until it reaches the moat outside the castle of the Wizard's Convention and gets dumped into it. The wizards at the convention gather at the window and laugh at Gargamel's misfortune, telling him to never come back and to take his "imaginary Smurfs" with him.
Disgusted by his first failure, Gargamel returns to the Great Book Of Spells and asks its spirit why it didn't give him a bird that could fly. The book answers that its master simply didn't ask for one, so Gargamel tells the book that he wants to be able to fly so that he can swoop down upon the Smurfs and capture them. The book now has Gargamel perform another ritual, and this time through the ritual various parts appear which the book instructs Gargamel how to assemble together. Soon the evil wizard's flying machine is ready for its first flight, and with Azrael sitting in the basket as Gargamel pedals the machine, its wings flap and they both are now airborne, flying over the forest in search of the Smurf Village so they can capture the Smurfs.
Meanwhile, in the Smurf Village, Painter is busy trying to work on a portrait of Clumsy Smurf when Clumsy finds himself distracted by something he sees overhead. Painter tells his subject to keep himself still, but eventually he notices what his friend is seeing: Gargamel and Azrael in a flying machine, flapping over the village as the pilot notices it from above and is ready to swoop down upon them. The other Smurfs as well as Papa Smurf also see Gargamel approaching, which makes Papa Smurf call Handy to wheel out the catapult. Brainy reminds Papa Smurf that they have no ammunition to fire at Gargamel, but Papa Smurf says that they have Greedy's pies to use as ammunition. As the evil wizard gets closer to the ground, he and his flying machine get pelted by pies lobbed at him from the catapult. A few holes are made in the wings by the pies, which cause Gargamel to lose altitude and control of the flying machine as he overshoots the village and ends up landing in the moat outside the castle of the Wizard's Convention. The wizards at the convention again mock and laugh at Gargamel's failure.
Gargamel returns to his castle again to awaken the spirit of the Great Book Of Spells to ask for another flying invention that would work better than the last one he used. The book insultingly tells Gargamel to do what he says, but Gargamel is fed up with obeying the book's commands and instead demands that the book gives him what he wants. The book responds by reminding Gargamel that the day has now passed, and with the day passing, Gargamel no longer has any control of the book, so it closes back up until the next full moon. Gargamel tries to force the book to awaken, but he gets zapped by the magical force, making him realize that he will have to create something for flying all on his own.
As Gargamel prepares a formula within his cauldron by mixing various ingredients together, he notices that it is now boiling over and puts a lid on the cauldron to try containing it. But the cauldron explodes and Gargamel is now flying through the air riding the cauldron's lid, passing right over the Smurf Village as Painter is finishing up his painting of Clumsy. Clumsy looks at the finished work and wonders if that's supposed to be him. The wizards at the convention watch a third time from the window as Gargamel lands yet again into the moat, and the host of the convention tells the evil wizard that the convention is now over. Frustrated by all his failures and the laughter he received from the other wizards, Gargamel rages at them, promising that he will show them the proof of Smurfs.
Trivia[]
- This is one of the few episodes besides most of Johan & Peewit series where the Smurfs aren't the main focus.
- This is the first episode in the series to feature the Great Book of Spells.
- Papa Smurf calls for Handy to wheel out the catapult. However, none of the Smurfs shown in the shot after this appear to be Handy. This may be Handy commanding these Smurfs offscreen or simply an animation error.
