Timeline

1928

• June 25 - Pierre Culliford (Peyo) was born in Brussels, Belgium.

1947

• Peyo's first creation, "Johan" 'was first published on newspaper called La Dernière Heure.

1949

• January 22 - Another Peyo's creation, "Poussy", was published on newspaper.

1952

• Johan was published on the French magazine 'Spirou'. While the the appearance of Johan was changed from blond-hair to dark-hair.
• The first Johan comic book "Basenhau's Punishment" was published by Dupuis.

1953

• The 2^nd "Johan" comic book "The Master of Roucybeuf" was published.

1954

• Peewit joined the series in the comic book 'The Goblin of Rocky Wood' (Le lutin du Bois aux Roches), and the name of the series had changed to 'Johan and Peewit' (Johan et Pirlouit).

1955

• The 4^th and 5^{th "}Johan and Peewit" comic books, "The Moonstone" and "The Vikings' Pledge" were published by Dupuis.
• December 29 - The birth of Peyo's son, Thierry Culliford.

1956

• The 6^th "Johan and Peewit" comic book, "The Source of the Gods", was published.

1957

• The 7^th and 8^th "Johan and Peewit" comic book, "The Black Arrow" and "The Earl of Montrésor" were published.

1958

• October 23 - The 9^th "Johan and Peewit" comic book 'The Smurfs and The Magic Flute' (La Flûte à six schtroumpfs) was published, marking the first appearance of the Smurfs.

1959

• The 10^th "Johan and Peewit" comic book, "The War of the Seven Springs" was published.
• The first comic story of the Smurfs, "The Black Smurfs", appeared on the magazine "Spirou".

1960

• January - Peyo created his 5^th series, which the name is called "Pierrot and the Lamp".
• December 15 - The first comic story of Benny Breakiron, 'The Red Taxis' was published.
• The 11^th "Johan and Peewit" comic book, "The Castellac Ring" was published.
• Peyo's 6^th creation, "Jacky and Célestin" was created.

1961

• The first Smurfs cartoon series was aired on RTB in Belgium, the series was continued airing in Belgium until 1967.

1963

• November 30 - The first comic book featuring the Smurfs, 'The Black Smurfs' was published. Gargamel and Azrael were introduced.

1965

• The first Smurfs animated film 'Les Aventures des Schtroumpfs' was aired on Belgian TV, and has been overshadowed 18 years later when 'The Smurfs and The Magic Flute" came to theatres in 1983.

1967

• March 16 - The second Smurf comic book 'The Smurfette' was published. Smurfette was introduced.

1973

• September 13 - The 9^th Smurfs comic book "Smurf Versus Smurf" was published.

1976

• October 7 - The film based on the comic book of the same name, 'The Smurfs and The Magic Flute' was shown in Europe, and features the original French audio track. Its first premiere was in Germany with a German audio track.
• December 3 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Denmark with a Danish audio track.
• December 6 - The 10^th Smurfs comic book "Smurf Soup" was published.
• December 16 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in France.
• December 18 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Sweden with a Swedish audio track.

1977

• December 15 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in The Netherlands with a Dutch audio track.

1978

• Father Abraham In Smurfland album was released worldwide, with 5,000 copies sold.
• December 21 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Hungary.

1979

• 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Spain with a Spanish European audio track.
• April 2 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Portugal.
• April 19 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in the United Kingdom, for the first time in English.

1980

• May 15 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Australia.
• August 29 - 'The Smurfs And The Magic Flute' film premiered in Finland.

1981

• September 12 - One of the first cartoon episodes 'The Astro Smurf' was aired on NBC in North America. Representing the start of the first season and the whole cartoon series.

1982

• April 8 - The Smurfs Springtime Special was aired. Lord Balthazar and Mother Nature were introduced.
• September 18 - The Smurfs cartoon season 2 was aired. The Johan And Peewit segments were also aired.
• December 13 - The Smurfs' Christmas Special was aired.
• Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle was released for the ColecoVision in the fall of 1982.

1983

• Marvel Comics published three original Smurfs comic books.
• The Smurfs Save The Day was released for the Atari 2600.
• February 3 - The 11^th Smurfs comic book "The Olympic Smurfs" was published.
• February 13 - My Smurfy Valentine was aired. Chlorhydris was introduced.
• September 17 - The Smurfs cartoon season 3 was aired. Baby Smurf and the adult version of Natural Smurf were introduced.
• November 25 - The film 'The Smurfs and The Magic Flute' premiered in United States with another English-language audio track.

1984

• November 27 - The 12^th Smurfs comic book "The Baby Smurf" was published, featuring the comic book debut of Baby Smurf.
• May 20 - The Smurfic Games was aired.
• September 15 - The Smurfs cartoon season 4 was aired.
• IMPS S.A. (International Merchandising, Promotion & Service) was founded and run by Peyo's daughter, Véronique Culliford.
• Smurf Paint & Play Workshop was released for the ColecoVision.

1985

• February 13 - Smurfily Ever After was aired.
• September 21 - The Smurfs cartoon season 5 was aired. The Smurflings and Puppy were introduced.

1986

• September 13 - The Smurfs cartoon season 6 was aired. Grandpa Smurf and Scruple were introduced.
• The syndication package of the Smurfs cartoon show, Smurfs Adventures was also aired, and continues to air on several TV channels including Boomerang as of today.

1987

• The Smurfs cartoon show was released on VHS for the first time in North America.
• September 19 - The Smurfs cartoon season 7 was aired. Wild Smurf and Chitter were introduced.
• December 13 - 'Tis The Season To Be Smurfy was aired.

1988

• April 1 - The 13^th Smurfs comic book "The Smurflings" was published featuring the comic book debut of the Smurflings.
• September 10 - The Smurfs cartoon season 8 was aired. Nanny Smurf and Smoogle were introduced.
• The first Smurf hot air balloon was built to commemorate the franchise' 30^th anniversary.

1989

• Smurfs Village Tales VHS was released in North America.
• May 9 - The theme park featuring the Smurfs, 'Big Bang Schtroumpfs' was opened at France.
• July 17 - Hanna-Barbera's 50th A Yabba Dabba Doo Celebration premiered on television, with all the characters from their shows together including the Smurfs themselves.
• September 9 - The last season of the cartoon show, the Smurfs cartoon season 9 was aired.
• December 2 - One of the last episodes of the ninth season was aired. Representing the end of the Smurfs cartoon show.

1990

• April 21 - Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue was aired.
• August 25 - After almost a decade of success, NBC had cancelled the show due to low ratings.
• October 17- The publisher of the Smurfs comic book had changed to Le Lombard from Dupuis with the publication of the comic story 'The Aerosmurf'

1991

• January 1 - The 14^th Smurf comic book, 'The Strange Awakening of Lazy Smurf' was published.
• April 20 - The theme park, 'Big Bang Schtroumpfs' changed its name to 'Walibi Schtroumpf', Smurfs attractions at there were kept the same until 2003.

1992

• January 1 - The 16^th Smurf comic book, 'The Finance Smurf' was published. This was the last Smurfs comic book by Peyo before his death.
• December 24 - Peyo died of heart attack at the age of 63. Since then, his son Thierry Culliford continued his father's work.

1994

• January 1 - The 17^th Smurf comic book, 'The Jewel Smurfer' was published. This was the first comic book published since Peyo's death.
• Infogrames' 1994 Smurfs game was released in Europe for the Super Nintendo, the Game Boy, and the Nintendo Entertainment System.

1995

• Infogrames' 1994 Smurfs game was released in Europe for the Mega Drive, the Sega Master System, the Game Gear, and the Sega Mega CD.

1996

• October 26 - The 18^th Smurf comic book, 'Doctor Smurf' was published.
• The Smurfs Go Pop! album was released.
• The Smurf From Space comic book was published.
• Infogrames' 1994 The Smurfs game for the Nintendo Gameboy was given a limited release in North America.

1997

• June 7 - The 11^th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'The Southern Road' was published.
• Following the predecessor, The Smurfs Go Pop! Again album was released.

1998

• The Smurfs Greatest Hits album was released.
• May 16 - The 16^th Johan and Peewit comic book, 'The Night Of The Sorcerers' was published.
• August 22 - 23 - Lucille Bliss, the original voice of Smurfette, attended ASIFA's AniFest 1998 in honor of the franchise's 40th anniversary, and Don Smurfo and Smurfette's Green Thumb were presented from the Mall Stage during the weekend.
• November 1 - The 19^th Smurf comic book 'The Wild Smurf' comic book was published. Featuring the comic book debut of Wild Smurf.
• 40^th Anniversary of the Smurfs franchise was celebrated.
• The second Smurf hot air balloon was built to commemorate the franchise' 40^th anniversary.

1999

2000

• November 1 - The 20^th Smurf comic book 'The Smurf Menace' was published.

2001

• The game 'Smurf Racer' was released for Sony Playstation and Microsoft Windows.
• May 12 - The last Johan and Peewit comic book, 'The Rose Of The Sand' was published

2002

• August 24 - The 13^th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'Chocolates And Underhanded Tricks' was published.
• November 1 - The 21^st Smurf comic book, 'Can't Smurf Progress' was published.

2003

• April 19 - The theme park 'Walibi Schtroumpf' changed its name to 'Walibi Lorraine' and re-opened on that day. However, all Smurf attractions were removed during renovations in the park during 2002 to 2003.
• November 1 - The 22^nd Smurf comic book, 'The Reporter Smurf' was published, featuring the comic debut of Reporter Smurf.

2004

• Beyond Home Entertainment acquired the DVD rights for the Smurfs cartoon show for Australia and New Zealand.
• November 6 - The 14^th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'John-John' was published.

2005

• January 1 - The 23^rd Smurf comic book, 'The Gambler Smurfs' was published.
• October - A 30-second Smurfs UNICEF advertisement video was shown.

2006

• January 13 - The 24^th Smurf comic book, 'Salad Smurfs' was published.

2007

• January 12 - The 25^th Smurf comic book, 'A Child Among The Smurfs' was published.

2008

• January 18 - The 26^th Smurf comic book, 'The Smurfs And The Book That Tells Everything' was published.
• 50^th Anniversary of the Smurfs franchise was celebrated.
• November 27 - The Smurfs characters joined the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time.

2009

• April 3 - The 27^th Smurf comic book, 'Bathing Smurfs' was published.

2010

• March 19 - Fabulous Films and Arrow Films secured the UK DVD rights to the Smurfs cartoon show, as well as 'The Smurfs and the Magic Flute'.
• April 16 - The 28^th Smurf comic book, 'The Grand Smurfette' was published.
• May 1 - The Smurfs became Belgium's Official Ambassador at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. The expo ran from this day to October 31, and was a runaway success in full Smurfy style.
• Papercutz acquired the rights to the Smurfs graphic novels for translation from French to English for North America.
• August 31 - The first Smurfs comic book published by Papercutz, 'The Purple Smurfs', was also translated in English in North America.
• The Smurfs' Village gaming application was released for Apple and Android devices.

2011

• April 8 - The 29^th Smurf comic book, 'The Smurfs And The Golden Tree' was published.
• June 25 - the first ever Global Smurfs Day event was celebrated worldwide to promote the Smurfs movie, in honor to Peyo's birthday.
• July 29 - The film 'The Smurfs' was shown worldwide. Gutsy Smurf, Narrator Smurf, and Crazy Smurf were introduced.
• The first seasonal special since the cartoon show, 'The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol' was shown.
• August 1 - Smurfologist Matt Murray's The World of Smurfs: A Celebration of Tiny Blue Proportions was published by Abrams.
• A 52 minute documentary, 'From The World of Peyo to Planet Smurf' was shown.

2012

• March 23 - The 30^th Smurf comic book, 'The Smurfs Of Order' was published.
• June 6 - 30 million holograms were launched on Smurfs products in 5 continents.
• June 25 - The Smurfs Store was opened in Brussels, along with the Smurf statue unraveled. On the same day, the second Global Smurfs Day was celebrated worldwide as well to honour Peyo's birthday.
• December - Smurf Life was released for Apple and Android devices.
• 'The Smurfs' (2011 film) won the BAFTA's Kids Vote Film awards.
• Spirou published an special edition book for celebrating the 60 anniversary of "Johan and Peeiwt"'s appearance on Spirou.

2013

• April 19 - The 31^st Smurf comic book, The Smurfs And The Pilus was published.

• January 14 - The Smurfs Epic Run was released worldwide for Apple iOS and Android devices.
• February 7 - A massive crowd of more than 2,000 people dressed as Smurfs gathered in an attempt to break the world record in Waldshut-Tiengenhave, Germany, only to fell just short of breaking that record and was only 361 short of 2,149 Smurfs, who previously broke the highest record in Wales in 2009.
• February 11 - The 2017 movie's title changed from Get Smurfy to Smurfs: The Lost Village, along with further celebrity voice casts confirmed including Joe Manganiello as Hefty Smurf, Jack McBrayer as Clumsy Smurf and Danny Pudi as Brainy Smurf
• March 1 - Doctor Smurf was published in English for North America by Papercutz.
