Plot Summary[]

Grouchy thinks personality switches are a real drag!
Clumsy and Vanity are on the run from Gargamel and Azrael out in the Smurf Forest, but then just as the wizard has them right where he wants them, he trips and falls, snaring the cat in his own net. As Gargamel rants in his failure to catch the Smurfs, Clumsy and Vanity make it safely to the village to tell Papa Smurf about their run-in with the evil wizard. Papa Smurf realizes that this is the third close call the Smurfs had with Gargamel. Clumsy says that things would be easier if Gargamel wasn't so mean all the time, which then inspires Papa Smurf to work on an experiment that takes him all night to complete.
By the following day, the village leader shows the potion to his little Smurfs, calling it a personality improver for Gargamel. As the Smurfs cheer, Clumsy slaps Papa Smurf on the back, causing him to douse the potion on both Smurfette and Grouchy, who are standing nearby. Then Papa Smurf notices that his personality improver actually was a personality exchanger, as Smurfette and Grouchy both switched personalities with each other.
At Gargamel's castle, Azrael was busy sleeping when his master arrives at the door, telling his cat that he has brought a surprise. As it turns out, his "surprise" is a pet bulldog that he called Snapper, which he says is his foolproof way to catch the Smurfs. However, the dog chases after Azrael, who is very afraid of a dog sharing the same space with him, and which also makes Gargamel angry, saying that it should be chasing Smurfs and not cats.
Back in the village, Papa Smurf sprinkles some magic powder on both Smurfette and Grouchy to switch their personalities back to normal, with Smurfette glad to be herself again. Papa Smurf then declares that he has been working too hard and that he needs a rest, so he tells his little Smurfs that he will go into a three-day trance. He leaves a note with an incantation on his door that his little Smurfs can recite to awaken him should there be an emergency. After Papa Smurf says goodnight and goes inside his house, the other Smurfs feel that they also need a rest from all the hard work they've been doing. Brainy, however, feels otherwise, and starts telling the other Smurfs that he will be assigning tasks for them to do while Papa Smurf is in a trance. But nobody stays around long enough to hear any more of what Brainy has to say, which makes him determined to show them.
With paper and quill in hand, Brainy goes around the village and starts making notes of Smurfs whom he sees are slacking off on their jobs. Hefty and Vanity notice Brainy doing his writing and wonder about him. Then after Brainy takes an axe and decides to do the chopping of wood, which he sees his fellow Smurfs have failed to do, Hefty and Vanity notice Brainy's paper lying on the ground. They try to read his writing, but everything is in code, which makes the two of them show it to the other Smurfs, who also say that Brainy has been spying on them. Smurfette suggests that they should do a little spying of their own and find out what Brainy is up to.
Out in the forest, Brainy tries to chop wood with no success, as none of the logs he comes across are small enough for him to chop. He does not see that his fellow Smurfs have followed him out into the forest with Tracker in the lead, being apprised of the situation. Tracker spots Brainy and says that he is blazing a trail away from the village, while Hefty suggest that the trail would lead somebody to it. Meanwhile, a bird takes the note with the incantation Papa Smurf has left on his door and flies off with it.
At Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard has both Azrael and Snapper tied up and separated from each other while he goes out into the forest to find something for his dog to sniff that will lead him to the Smurfs. He warns his two pets to behave themselves while he's gone, or he will turn them both into toads. But no sooner does he depart, both Azrael and Snapper start fighting with each other.
The Smurfs see Brainy carrying a sack with him out into the forest, which makes them wonder what he's doing. They ask Brainy what's in the sack, and he replies that it's something not important for them to know. He carries the sack to the river and then leaves it there to head back to the village, saying that he forgot his scrub brush. The Smurfs see this and are curious to find out what's in the sack, but before they could open it, they see Gargamel coming and hide in the bushes as he picks up the sack and sees that there are Smurf clothes in it. He is ecstatic that he has found something that will lead him to the Smurf Village and thanks the Smurf for leaving it there for him to find.
The Smurfs watching the whole thing from the bushes now assume that Brainy is in league with Gargamel and so they head back into the village to wake up Papa Smurf and warn him. But when they reach his house, they see that the incantation is no longer on the door, which means that they can't wake him. Hefty then says that they'll have to deal with his problem without Papa Smurf.
Soon, Brainy is taken by his fellow Smurfs and placed in the village storehouse to be held in custody until Papa Smurf awakens. Brainy protests that he is innocent, but Hefty isn't buying it, and neither is Smurfette or anyone else. Brainy realizes that he needs to escape and prove his innocence. He sees that Handy's catapult is in the room he is held inside and that he could use it to escape through the high window. Then he looks around for a rope he could use to launch himself and sees one just outside the storehouse. He goes outside to get it, but then notices just before the catapult launches him out the window that the door to the storehouse wasn't locked.
As Brainy goes to find Papa Smurf's incantation to prove his innocence, Gargamel empties the sack of its clothes in front of Snapper and tells the dog to sniff out the scent so he can find the Smurfs. Snapper does and soon he races his way through the forest, dragging his master along with him. Brainy runs into Gargamel and Snapper and duck out of their way as they plow right past him, but then Azrael spots Brainy and gives chase to him. Brainy only manages to elude Azrael by running off a ledge, right into a bird's nest, which is where he finds the note with the incantation written on it.
The Smurfs notice that Brainy has escaped from the storehouse, and so they head for Papa Smurf's house, where they find him already there with what they think is a spell from Gargamel. However, Brainy recites the incantation and Papa Smurf suddenly awakens, proving that he was innocent. But then they hear a commotion outside, and Papa Smurf sees that Gargamel has found his way to the Smurf Village. He wonders what he could do to get rid of the wizard, and then he sees the bottle with the personality exchanger potion in it, which gives him an idea.
While Gargamel is busy collecting Smurfs in his sack, Smurfette lures Azrael to chase after her by taunting him until she leads him straight into Gargamel, causing the cat to cover his head. Then Papa Smurf had Hefty catapult the potion right onto both Gargamel and Azrael, and soon the two exchanged personalities with each other. As Gargamel wonders why he now looks like a cat, Azrael in the form of his master runs away from Snapper, and so also does Gargamel, realizing that his new pet can't tell who is who.
With the Smurfs glad that Gargamel and Azrael are gone from the village, they apologize to Brainy for ever suspecting him to be a turncoat. Brainy says that they should be sorry, for he is going to record everything in his list of no-nos. As he goes on a one-way flight out of the village, Brainy says that at least things have returned to normal.
Goofs[]
- This episode contains a continuity error: in the scene where Papa Smurf remembers about the personality exchanger formula when Gargamel is attacking the Smurf Village, the bottle appears on a table in what looks like Gargamel's castle instead of Papa Smurf's laboratory.
- When Smurfette and Hefty realizes that Brainy is gone, Clumsy can be heard saying "Geez gosh, he is gone," but he is nowhere to be seen.
- At one point the Smurfs' tails are white.
- When Brainy is writing at the end of the episode, his arm keeps on disappearing and reappearing for a split second.
- When Gargamel is dumping Brainy's clothes out of the bag, you can see some shirts, despite the Smurfs never wearing any shirt.
- When Brainy is waking up Papa Smurf, he and Hefty are the only ones in his lab, but when Gargamel is in the Smurf Village, Smurfette appears out of nowhere in Papa Smurf's house.
- When Smurfette and Hefty are locking Brainy up, when she says, "We’re going to keep you here until Papa Smurf wakes up," her mouth does not move.
